1.
Very true. The idea was to make them mix and match-able. Not produce the finest instruments in the world. If you want the iconic image and sound then who cares about a few gaps here and there?
I thought the idea behind the bolt on neck was to be able to change the neck when the frets wore out? I'm not disputing what you are saying, in was likely both plus the fact that Fender have been since day 1 all about building instruments as cheaply as they could - cheapest woods at the time, repainting bodies to match orders etc My MIM Fender is nigh on perfect. Personally, the way I see it is that the main difference between MIM & MIA is that MIA Fenders are made in America by Mexicans using American parts, MIM Fenders are made in Mexico by Mexicans using American parts.
2. I remember when I was 17calling the leader of a big band about the role of bass player as their one was leaving. He asked me if I could read music and I told him I could. When I turned up at the rehearsal I was met with my double bass tutor who it turns out was their current bass player and the one I was replacing - Ooops. He knew that I couldn't read very well. Anyway I bluffed it enough to get the gig and taught myself to read music properly. Played with them for 18 months as well as a spin-off band which was a Dixieland Jazz band. I learned so much from these guys who'd all been playing for years, some were inthe 70s and had some amazing stories to tell
3.
I've always said if I play and a gig and don't make the odd mistake I'm not trying hard enough never been one for learning bass lines note for note but like to react to what is going on around me and compliment where I can, echoing a cool guitar lick or drum fill when I know where they're going. By the time I realise I've hit a duff note I'm already past it so grin like a cheshire cat and carry on!
We're not related are we? Cos that's exactly my philosophy.
4. I've learned a lot gear wise but not really playing wise as I don't practice at home unless its to learn a new song. I've had a lot of good times and a lot of laughs on here but I think the biggest recent thing for me was seeing the thread on the Precision Bass FSR which prompted me try one out and buy it
5. If you click on my sig you'll see pics of mine. Yeah lots of stuff on Tallkbs, these are rumoured to have the first run of the necks for the Geddy Lee Jazz. A very well made bass and great to play
6. The whole reason I use Herco Heavy guage picks is because they are rougher and don't slip about between my fingers
7. Bought this for a project that's long gone so no longer required Its a set of 4 individual chrome bridges and comes with fitting screws Looking for £15 posted for these to mainland uk
8. You need to state a price otherwise your thread could be removed. Pictures and a location for this fine cab would be useful as well
9.
I play my fretless as I play my fretted bass. No cheesy slides or vibrato. I love the way it plays and the feel. If you came to a gig and closed your eyes you'd be pushed to tell it was a fretless you were hearing most of the time
Same here - I just think that an unlined fretless looks really cool. I've been thinking for a while about getting another one
10. I can't bear loud noise anymore. I even wear my earplugs when I go to the cinema cos its so loud, never mind gigs and concerts. I've even found myself putting them in when I'm in the pub, even without music or a band on. But back to the OP, you must do everything you can to avoid making things worse. I think I caught mine in time. Whenever I practice at home I use a guitar combo as I can practice at a decent level without all the rumblings going through to next door. My music comes through my surround system. I could link it into the aux in of the combo and use headphones but I abhor cables anywhere near me, that'swhy I use a wireless system when I gig
11. I fitted one of these last night to my Precision and noticed that the foam in the box is much softer than what was underneath the pickup that I removed so I cut the foam twice as thick to compensate. There's plenty in the box to experiment getting the right amount under the pickup
12. Ok but my hand and forearm are prefectly straight when I am playing so I'm trying to work out what is wrong with that. I'm not trying to start an argument/debate/bludgeoning, I'm just really curious. The wrist bands provide the cushioning so that my tendons and whatnot are not being pressed against the bass, cutting off the blood and stuff. T-Rex arms. I know exactly what you mean but never pictured it like that
13. you need a big bag of weed and some microwave burritos to get that sound

15.
I'm trying to think how your wrist touches anything when playing.
Think harder then Mine does and always has done - is there some reason why my right wrist shouldn't touch my bass?
16. I've often found as well that pictures uploaded directly to the site in the past have been very small whereas with something like photobucket they can be really huge if needs be. Another advantage is that if you want to post any of your pictures in the future, they're already there, you just need to copy the link and if you want to sell your item on Egay then there's link code for that as well without having to pay for more pictures using gallery on Egay

18. It too find this annoying as I want to see pictures. It is very simple if you just take a couple of minutes to upload pictures and then press the button copy the code then paste it here. To show you how quick and easy it is, I am going to take a picture, upload it then post it.
19. I used both a 1048H and 1153 with my 7210H at different times and both worked well
20.
Yes for me, the magic's in the fingers, not in the instrument itself. A Precision is capable of many tones if you play it right. Don't get me wrong, I love many many different models of basses, but if it came down to one, it'd be a nice and simple Precision, and a bit of imagination from the player. David Bailey once said, that if you can't take a decent picture with a Kodak Instamatic, then you can't take a decent picture with a Leica either.
We have a winner. My main bass is an active PJ Fender. Bass and treble are set flat, mids are slightly boosted and the blend is more towards the P than the J. That is how it stays, I never touch the controls. When I want a different sound I can play softer, harder, move my hand towards the neck or towards the bridge, pluck the strings towards the body or towards the top of the bass, slap at the end of the neck or between P & J Pickups, pluck with my thumb or use my thumb as a pick. I also occasionally whack the strings with my hand for certain effects. I have just changed the pickups to a DiMarzio Will Power and an Ultrajazz as they are more responsive to changes in playing style and I have my bass setup so that if I play it hard enough I can get a nice amount of fret buzz but not when I am playing normally This comes from years of playing in function bands where I didn't have the time to change basses for certain sounds so I learnt to adapt my style to what I was playing. I think too many people try to find basses that can sound they way they want for different songs without actually trying to find out if there's a way that they can make their current bass do what they want. This is something that I have done, not because I wanted to copy someone else's technique but which has happened out of necessity. BTW I am not dissing anyone who has multiple basses, I just like to keep things simple and would rather have one well set up bass than several that I have to spend a lot of time setting each one up and having to switch between songs, spend more on strings, batteries etc.
21.
Trace Elliot claim it stands for bass frequency cabinet.. I, like most others on here rather have our own ideas..
Yeah Big F*****g Cab
22. I'm building up a large collection of wrist bands that I use when I'm playing. It came from playing a thunderbird which has the square edges to make it more comfortable but now I wear two all the time at gigs as the right one stops my wrist sticking to the bass if I get a bit sweaty and I have a really bad habit of resting my wrist on the body but its where my arm/hand/wrist is at its straightest. I've tried longer ones but I think they look silly
23. Most are straight forward like the 1524, 1248, 1528, 1048H, 1084 etc. Its generally the compact ones that have slightly different and bewildering codes. 2102, 2103H, 2104 (rarer 4ohm cab), 1153 (maybe to match the 2103 cab code?) The most obvious one is the BFC - make your own mind up what that really stands for going by the size and weight Combos can be even more be wildering: 1110 (Mk V 4x10" combo), 7210 (GP7 2x10" combo), 1215 (GP12 1x15"combo)
