I play my fretless as I play my fretted bass. No cheesy slides or vibrato. I love the way it plays and the feel. If you came to a gig and closed your eyes you'd be pushed to tell it was a fretless you were hearing most of the time
Same here - I just think that an unlined fretless looks really cool. I've been thinking for a while about getting another one

Headphones use on practise amps & potential ear damage??
Delberthot replied to Big_Stu's topic in General Discussion
I can't bear loud noise anymore. I even wear my earplugs when I go to the cinema cos its so loud, never mind gigs and concerts. I've even found myself putting them in when I'm in the pub, even without music or a band on. But back to the OP, you must do everything you can to avoid making things worse. I think I caught mine in time. Whenever I practice at home I use a guitar combo as I can practice at a decent level without all the rumblings going through to next door. My music comes through my surround system. I could link it into the aux in of the combo and use headphones but I abhor cables anywhere near me, that'swhy I use a wireless system when I gig -
I fitted one of these last night to my Precision and noticed that the foam in the box is much softer than what was underneath the pickup that I removed so I cut the foam twice as thick to compensate. There's plenty in the box to experiment getting the right amount under the pickup

Wrist protection - sweat bands and the like
Delberthot replied to ahpook's topic in General Discussion
Ok but my hand and forearm are prefectly straight when I am playing so I'm trying to work out what is wrong with that. I'm not trying to start an argument/debate/bludgeoning, I'm just really curious. The wrist bands provide the cushioning so that my tendons and whatnot are not being pressed against the bass, cutting off the blood and stuff. T-Rex arms. I know exactly what you mean but never pictured it like that -
you need a big bag of weed and some microwave burritos to get that sound
I'm trying to think how your wrist touches anything when playing.
Think harder then Mine does and always has done - is there some reason why my right wrist shouldn't touch my bass? -
Image display in your listings while uploader is broken
Delberthot replied to tedmanzie's topic in Basses For Sale
I've often found as well that pictures uploaded directly to the site in the past have been very small whereas with something like photobucket they can be really huge if needs be. Another advantage is that if you want to post any of your pictures in the future, they're already there, you just need to copy the link and if you want to sell your item on Egay then there's link code for that as well without having to pay for more pictures using gallery on Egay -

I used both a 1048H and 1153 with my 7210H at different times and both worked well
Yes for me, the magic's in the fingers, not in the instrument itself. A Precision is capable of many tones if you play it right. Don't get me wrong, I love many many different models of basses, but if it came down to one, it'd be a nice and simple Precision, and a bit of imagination from the player. David Bailey once said, that if you can't take a decent picture with a Kodak Instamatic, then you can't take a decent picture with a Leica either.
We have a winner. My main bass is an active PJ Fender. Bass and treble are set flat, mids are slightly boosted and the blend is more towards the P than the J. That is how it stays, I never touch the controls. When I want a different sound I can play softer, harder, move my hand towards the neck or towards the bridge, pluck the strings towards the body or towards the top of the bass, slap at the end of the neck or between P & J Pickups, pluck with my thumb or use my thumb as a pick. I also occasionally whack the strings with my hand for certain effects. I have just changed the pickups to a DiMarzio Will Power and an Ultrajazz as they are more responsive to changes in playing style and I have my bass setup so that if I play it hard enough I can get a nice amount of fret buzz but not when I am playing normally This comes from years of playing in function bands where I didn't have the time to change basses for certain sounds so I learnt to adapt my style to what I was playing. I think too many people try to find basses that can sound they way they want for different songs without actually trying to find out if there's a way that they can make their current bass do what they want. This is something that I have done, not because I wanted to copy someone else's technique but which has happened out of necessity. BTW I am not dissing anyone who has multiple basses, I just like to keep things simple and would rather have one well set up bass than several that I have to spend a lot of time setting each one up and having to switch between songs, spend more on strings, batteries etc.

Wrist protection - sweat bands and the like
Delberthot replied to ahpook's topic in General Discussion
I'm building up a large collection of wrist bands that I use when I'm playing. It came from playing a thunderbird which has the square edges to make it more comfortable but now I wear two all the time at gigs as the right one stops my wrist sticking to the bass if I get a bit sweaty and I have a really bad habit of resting my wrist on the body but its where my arm/hand/wrist is at its straightest. I've tried longer ones but I think they look silly -
Most are straight forward like the 1524, 1248, 1528, 1048H, 1084 etc. Its generally the compact ones that have slightly different and bewildering codes. 2102, 2103H, 2104 (rarer 4ohm cab), 1153 (maybe to match the 2103 cab code?) The most obvious one is the BFC - make your own mind up what that really stands for going by the size and weight Combos can be even more be wildering: 1110 (Mk V 4x10" combo), 7210 (GP7 2x10" combo), 1215 (GP12 1x15"combo)

SWR are also owned by Fender, not Gibson and a cheap Tobias range has been released by Gibson. Obviously nowhere near as good as the originals but they are selling them for buttons compared to the originals Fender and Gibson are the musical equivelant of General Motors and Ford. They both own a large slice of the market made up of many different manufacturers and if any of them don't do so well then they're shut down. Its never nice when a brand ceases to exist but at the end of the day its business.

Recommendations needed for beginner bass books!
Delberthot replied to Truckstop's topic in General Discussion
Racking my brains here but can't think of anything. Like you, I'm self taught. 25 years and 3 days ago I picked up my first bass. how about picking some songs? That's how I learned by just playing everything I could get my hands on -
ABM Evo ii 500 - Couple a questions from a new owner
Delberthot replied to Salt on your Bass?'s topic in Amps and Cabs
Ashdown 4x10" cabs can go stupidly loud - both ABM & MAG. I have two ABMs but have never needed to use the second one. They can take a lot of power so I reckon I'd maybe need the second one if I was playing in a 500+ seater venue with no PA support but in a 500 seater venue there probably would be a PA. I'd gig with the one first before deciding on a second cab The upside to Ashdown cabs is that you can pick them up dirt cheap cos not everyone wants to lift 37kg 4x10" cabs. -
Always wanted one of those just cos they're a bit different. To me they almost look like the 5 string version of the Mustang given the size of the body/neck proportions
I bet the pre amp is sh*t.
Nope its actually pretty good. Have you tried one? Its more or less a Precision Deluxe with a Geddy Lee neck and Blacktop style bridge in a limited finish ( 250 overall with 150 in Europe ) I think playability is excellent. The neck is quite slim but not overly e.g. my Ibanez Doug Wimbish neck feels like I'm holding a pencil but this feels nice. I think it sounds quite polite so that is why I have fitted DiMarzio Will Power P and Ultra Jazz pickups. The sound is off the scale its so high output now. It did sound really good to begin with but it was more the playability for me. Now it sounds exactly like the sound I had in my head. There is a lot of control over the sound with the 3 band preamp and the blend control works really well to get the right mix between the P and the J. It sounded really good with the factory strings for the wedding/function stuff but I'm mainly using it with the rock band. I had fitted my trusty Roto flats to it but it wasn't quite there but with the D'addario Chromes its right where I want it to be. Very comfortable to play with a neoprene strap. The only thing I could fault with it is that the battery compartment has two screws instead of the equally as cheap flip out one but it does have brass inserts so you don't chew up the wood changing the battery. I find it slightly heavy compared to my last two basses which were the aforementioned Ibanez and an Epiphone Thunderbird but they weigh next to nothing. Its still a lot lighter than any of my Stingrays were

I'm using a Gator GK-2110 bag designed for a Microkorg for my Gallien Krueger 1001RB II. Its not a light amp but its a strong bag. They do loads of different versions, I have my Boss GT6-B in another one the same size. Two handles and a shoulder strap and an external zippy bit for cables all for £20. I keep my main power lead and speaker lead in the pocket of the amp one and the adaptor for the Boss in its bag. Makes for quicker setting up and stripping down time.
