1. I may be imagining it but I find that the Boost control on my Gallien 1001RB II gives me more grit than on the 700RB II I had before
2. SWR are also owned by Fender, not Gibson and a cheap Tobias range has been released by Gibson. Obviously nowhere near as good as the originals but they are selling them for buttons compared to the originals Fender and Gibson are the musical equivelant of General Motors and Ford. They both own a large slice of the market made up of many different manufacturers and if any of them don't do so well then they're shut down. Its never nice when a brand ceases to exist but at the end of the day its business.
3. Racking my brains here but can't think of anything. Like you, I'm self taught. 25 years and 3 days ago I picked up my first bass. how about picking some songs? That's how I learned by just playing everything I could get my hands on
4. Ashdown 4x10" cabs can go stupidly loud - both ABM & MAG. I have two ABMs but have never needed to use the second one. They can take a lot of power so I reckon I'd maybe need the second one if I was playing in a 500+ seater venue with no PA support but in a 500 seater venue there probably would be a PA. I'd gig with the one first before deciding on a second cab The upside to Ashdown cabs is that you can pick them up dirt cheap cos not everyone wants to lift 37kg 4x10" cabs.
5. Always wanted one of those just cos they're a bit different. To me they almost look like the 5 string version of the Mustang given the size of the body/neck proportions
6.
I bet the pre amp is sh*t.
Nope its actually pretty good. Have you tried one? Its more or less a Precision Deluxe with a Geddy Lee neck and Blacktop style bridge in a limited finish ( 250 overall with 150 in Europe ) I think playability is excellent. The neck is quite slim but not overly e.g. my Ibanez Doug Wimbish neck feels like I'm holding a pencil but this feels nice. I think it sounds quite polite so that is why I have fitted DiMarzio Will Power P and Ultra Jazz pickups. The sound is off the scale its so high output now. It did sound really good to begin with but it was more the playability for me. Now it sounds exactly like the sound I had in my head. There is a lot of control over the sound with the 3 band preamp and the blend control works really well to get the right mix between the P and the J. It sounded really good with the factory strings for the wedding/function stuff but I'm mainly using it with the rock band. I had fitted my trusty Roto flats to it but it wasn't quite there but with the D'addario Chromes its right where I want it to be. Very comfortable to play with a neoprene strap. The only thing I could fault with it is that the battery compartment has two screws instead of the equally as cheap flip out one but it does have brass inserts so you don't chew up the wood changing the battery. I find it slightly heavy compared to my last two basses which were the aforementioned Ibanez and an Epiphone Thunderbird but they weigh next to nothing. Its still a lot lighter than any of my Stingrays were
7. I'm using a Gator GK-2110 bag designed for a Microkorg for my Gallien Krueger 1001RB II. Its not a light amp but its a strong bag. They do loads of different versions, I have my Boss GT6-B in another one the same size. Two handles and a shoulder strap and an external zippy bit for cables all for £20. I keep my main power lead and speaker lead in the pocket of the amp one and the adaptor for the Boss in its bag. Makes for quicker setting up and stripping down time.
8. A photo I took when I saw Cheap Trick in Glasgow a couple of years ago
9. My mum got me a handmade strat shaped wine bottle holder and a bass fridge magnet. My wife got me a Gallien Krueger t-shirt and new wrist bands. And completely unbass related but my mum also got me a bottle of Glenrothes single malt. I normally go for the Balvenie but I tried this during the summer and its really nice.
10. I thought I had a rattly grill on an aluminium coned Behringer 4x10" cab I had once. Drove me mad - I had loads of beer mats jammed between the grill and the side of the cab but it kept on doing it. Several gigs later it started distorting towards the end of the night and when I looked at it, all 4 drivers had shattered and there were bits of aluminium all over the place. Complained to Behringer, they kindly sent me a brand new one FOC and it was straight on Ebay
11. Here it is
12. There used to be a US seller on Ebay that would let you choose what colours you wanted of DR ones - I got 6 different ones for this bass
13. I bought a Brooklyn Gear neoprene strap from Stringbusters about 9 years ago and its done 100s of gigs. Very comfortable and hopefully will last a lot longer -you can get them here for £22
14. I prefer the neck higher and the body lower so have the body sitting on the stomach and the bass at a 45 degree angle. I've done this for so long that I couldn't entertain playing a bass that had even the slightest neck dive
15. I've had a few Bass Collections and I found that Elites were the best sounding strings for me. You didn't say whether it was a 4 or 5 but on the 5s I had I used the Nathan East set which were 47s Having said that Optima golds sounded really good on the fretless
16. Normally 45,65,85,105 but I've recently started using D'addario Chromes 40s and they feel really nice tension. Alternatively, Roto 50s flats tuned down a semitone sound amazing. Really heavy duty bass tones and feel nice tension but way too much tension when tuned to pitch
17.
It's. shame flats are synonymous with the word 'thud'. They do so much more.
Totally agree. My bass sound is anything but 'thud'. I have a very aggressive, trebly tone. I just couldn't go back to rounds now. they have nothing to offer me that I can't get with my flats. I sometimes get players coming up to me at the end of a gig to complement me on my tone and do a double take when they realise that I use flats. I've used Roto flats for a few years which are great on the Ibanez but have just begun using D'Addario Chromes now and they work so well on my precision. The 40 gauge ones are perfect tension for me. Truckstop - have you tried Roto flats on your Blazer? I got a really good sound with them when I had mine
18. Both cabs are the same size. I used the 210 combo with a 115mbe underneath it and it sounded very good.there was some serious trouser flapping going on. So yes, to me, the 210 and 115 sounded very good together. Plenty of grunt
19. I have the 1001RB II and two Ashdown ABM410s but only ever need one. Absolutely love the sound. Very dirty when I dig in and cuts through like an extremely cutty thingy. You can pick them up for less than £200 second hand and I believe you could run 4 of these if you happen to playing the O2
20. When I was 14 I got to see my bass hero at the time who was playing with Eric Clapton at the time - it was Nathan East. It was my first ever concert and it was at the SECC in Glasgow and I couldn't hear a single thing he played. I was so disappointed
21. I'm sure that someone on here got a sleeve made for theirs but I can't remember how it was finished
22.
Pink Floyd, more than any other for me I think using Fenders of course
Roger used a Rickenbacker RM1999 in the early days and Dave used a Les Paul in the late 70s and recorded one of, if not their most famous tune, Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 But yeah, its that sunburst precision from Live at Pompeii and the Strat with the Lace Sensors pickups from Delicate Sound Of Thunder that come to mind first
23.
If you want to know the band ,,,pm's welcome ps the clue is in my avatar
Since no one else is having a bash I'll take a guess at: TheYoung Ones Bacon Sandwich Bambi goes crazy ape bonkers with his drill and sex Scumbag College and so on. I've watched that episode many times
24. I don't fancy trying to win this year's Darwin award so the amp was always going to be unplugged and not been used for several days before opening it up. I vaguely remember reading something about discharging the caps or some such thingies before opening up. As I said, many time bass modder/repairer, first time amp repair. Want to make sure I don't end up as a charcoal briquette
25. My Gallien Krueger 1001RB II has developed a scratchy input jack so I'm going to replace it. The taking apart and soldering work does not bother me but I've never worked on an amp before -is there anything I should know before opening it up so I don't get electrocuted or something?
