Pick or Fingers … ongoing dilemma!!
BassAdder60 replied to BassAdder60's topic in Theory and Technique
Thanks Chris 👍 -
At 12 o’clock compression setting they state it’s 3:1 compression Its max clockwise is 10:1 so quite a low range and might be why it sounds so sweet !

Pick or Fingers … ongoing dilemma!!
BassAdder60 replied to BassAdder60's topic in Theory and Technique
I think for the majority of my setlist the PBass with a pick sounds better Zombie Whole Lot of Rosie Highway to Hell Rebel Yell The Trooper The Pretender Doctor Doctor Whole Lot of Love Immigrant Song Basket Case Buck Rogers The Chain Fingers seem to suit Purple Rain Long Train Running Hard to Handle Weak Tush Blow Its a challenge and I could switch from pick to fingers so that works however I tend to have my amp set for pickstyle with less high mids and less top and the bass boosted more to fill out the sound The tone is great although I do lose that pillowy fullness of fingers but for most songs I don’t think I need it. When I listen back to some gig clips my best tone is always when I’ve used a pick -
My home town back in the day ! We are playing the Black Horse Ipswich in 2024 🤟
-
Yes still have mine, warm tone from it and it just works. Just tried mine again with a pick and it really warms things and fattens the sound nicely I believe it’s because it’s Optical ? my settings below

Exactly my discovery.. There is something pure about a nice bass tone for any genre Amp drive / valve amps etc I think have a place for sure too 👍

Update I’m also selling my new Metro 20 board !! Everything is off the board. Shure GLXD16+ has rubber feet fitted so can sit on top of amp or floor. Genzler footswitch also has rubber feet so it can sit on the floor in front of speaker Liberating !!

Ashdown ABM revelation + questions (compressor, tube etc)
BassAdder60 replied to NeonMig's topic in Amps and Cabs
Should be able to find the ABM600 for £400 approx Personally I wouldnt spend £200 -£300 on the ABM500 as it’s quite old now and more likely start having issues and failures. ( can be repaired though ) Although many are still in service and working well, a credit to the build quality etc especially U.K. built models £400+ for the ABM600 is a bargain for what you get albeit now made in China ! -
Ashdown ABM revelation + questions (compressor, tube etc)

Definitely go for an ABM600 head as folk are selling as the newer ABM750 is now out The ABM600 is my favourite amp and really performs well live. Compressor is terrible and the Sub feature is ok but most don’t use it although matey in U2 supposedly used his always on set very light The valve in the preamp is often something that needs changing but when done it will last for years. I changed mine on a fairly new head as it was “ crackly” and a new JJ ECC83 was popped in and sorted. Best live work amps around in my opinion and excellent after sales service -

I’ve experimented with many common effects pedals such as drive, compression, chorus etc and I seem to always come back to a simple straight into a good amp approach!! I love the clean tone of a PBass and find it just works without really needing much else and I’ve gone round in circles trying out pedals and finding they don’t improve what really doesn’t need improving ! The only pedals I have on my board now are my Shure GLXD16+ receiver / tuner and my Genzler drive channel footswitch for the Magellan 800 Im thinking I should downsize my board too as it’s a Metro 20 and the two items look a little lost on a 20” board !

I agree with this and have the same amps The TE Elf into a good 4 ohm cab is easily gig worthy and sounds good too.
-
Rehearsal last night played most of the set fingers and liked to deep full sound. End of evening I played with the pick but it felt so empty in comparison
-
I wouldn’t get an amp less than 300w ideally 500w or larger for playing gigs There are many low cost mid wattage amps that would be worth considering and get a head and separate cab ( far more flexible ) Some low cost contenders are Peavey and Laney The Orange Little Bass Thing is a lovely amp for sensible money Add a decent 1x15 or 2 x 10 cab and you’re set

I always found chorus got lost in the band mix especially played finger style

And .. for those who may think just screw a 13 hole guard on the issue is there isn’t any wood under the cavity area for the extra screws to go ! Hence why it’s more tricky
-
That’s a good point .. I think around the controls and Jack socket where the 13hole guards have the extra holes are perhaps for that very reason
-
I’ve emailed them to ask if they can do without the pickup cover holes
-
I’m trying to source a 10hole black 3 ply but only seem to be 1ply or 13hole as the one in the photo
-
Which one ? Slight dilemma and that is finding 10hole PBass pickguards in the U.K. at a sensible price 13 hole versions have extra holes around the vol/ tone/ Jack area and appear to have no body under them IE routing is different

Didn’t play for me either !
