  1. I’ve been looking at the Magellan 800 and I’m tempted to add it to my collection based on reviews and 2.67ohms of course
  2. I already have the cabs SVT212AV ( 4ohms ) and SVT 112AV ( 8 ohms ) Note the TH700 amp I now use runs down to 2.67 ohms as standard. Bonus if I could get the ABM600 to do the same
  3. My main rig now is a 212 4ohm cab and 112 8 ohm cab which I use with the Tonehammer 700 ( superb sound ) I either mod the Ashdown for backup duty or sell it and buy a different amp. I know the obvious ie disconnect one cab and use just the 212 but that’s not what I’m trying to do. The Ampeg cabs all have the same 12” speakers and using it as a 2.67 ohm rig shares the power across three speakers and it’s an awesome sound and nice and tall too. I’ve sold all my Ashdown gear except the ABM600 head which was next to go but thought if it could be modded at Ashdown HQ I would keep it and use it for some gigs and alternate between the TH700
  4. Anyone ever had their ABM600 modified to run at 2.67ohms instead of 4 ohms ? Perhaps a question for Dave @ Ashdown?
  5. So … Jazz Bass used at last nights gig and interesting discovery… it sounds so much more prominent in the band mix. It took me by surprise as using my PBass it would sit low in the mix but the Jazz seems to have a mid / high mid presence and deep lows My PBass always has lots of low mids that are hard to EQ for clarity sometimes. Still love my PBass but happy I have both as it was a pleasant discovery
  6. Just watching Peter Frampton on Sky Arts .. what an amazing talented band and Peter is such a great guitarist with a big smile on his face .. awesome !
  7. My very basic board but all doing something ! LMB3 always on GEB7 always on Sparkbooster always on
  8. Since playing mostly a PBass at every gig ( excluding my younger days using a full fat Stingay through an SVT CL ) I’ve learnt the good and not so good of using a PBass for certain songs. I think the PBass needs a different EQ setting to say a Jazz or Stingray even. Depending on the genre and other band instruments reducing 40-50hz works wonders ( unless it’s for reggae / dub etc ) Boosting high mids too 800-1.2K brings clarity Then of course you can disregard all that and use a pick and back off the bass tone for yet again a different sound but loads of attack. I went back and forth with Fingers / Pick but what it needed was better EQ control that many amps can’t handle in my opinion in comparison to a multi band EQ pedal. Some amps work better depending on their EQ points The Jazz bass I’ve discovered is less challenging to EQ I think but it doesn’t quite sound like a PBass but has a more polite tone of its own to work with. Also as mentioned depending on genre but fresh roundwounds in a PBass works wonders unless you’re after that flatwound thud kind of tone ( not for me )
  9. Yes I agree it’s near enough to satisfy my PBass tone but also gives a slight clearer hi mid tone which I like Naturally some will like it some will not, all personal taste and what works for the individual… if it wasn’t like that we would all play the same bass !!
  10. As a follow on to this … I think I’m becoming a Jazz bass convert. For me I’m finding I prefer the neck and the sound and it does have something different going on with it’s sound compared to a PBass I particularly like neck pup on full, bridge pup on 50% and tone on full. Hard to explain but it just works better for me and my fingers ! The tone is deep but better mid clarity ( not low mids like a PBass but mid to high mids ) It has better articulation to my ears and I’m enjoying this discovery of Jazz basses So now what .. I have two like new Player Series PBass guitars that I may be having to trade or sell .. Weight ?? Jazz basses I think tend to be heavier so a better strap perhaps to my 2.5” Levy Leather strap Happy Bassist for now !!!
  11. Isn’t the Mustang bass neck 1.5” like the Jazz ? I know it’s 30” scale vs 34”
  12. For me the result has been successful and that might just be a Jazz bass sits in our band mix better, certainly fits better with the drums and guitar. Nothing wrong with my PBass either and if I was pick playing all songs I would play the PBass. For myself it’s worked and naturally it’s satisfying to find an alternative to achieve the tone you seek in context with your band sound. Incidentally, I tried this with a Stingray bass but it didn’t work as well as the Jazz. Don’t forget this is for my tone in a rock band so for others it might not be right, but I’m glad I ventured over to the JBass and I like what I hear and it’s comfortable to play albeit heavier than my other basses !

    Boss GEB7

Added the GEB7 in front of my amp after my LMB3 compressor Very impressed how useful it is to tweek the EQ to suit the room I pulled down slightly 50hz and boosted 500hz Good old Boss pedal and adds more EQ control that your amp doesn’t offer
  14. If you read about the differences in tone you get from a PBass compared to a JBass some folk have strong opinions on which is better suited, in my case playing rock in the band. Having mostly played a PBass fingerstyle I did find at times a lack of note definition or clarity. This lead me to try a Jazz bass … The results were interesting… on quieter songs / clean guitar tone ( from guitarist ) I found the Jazz with everything on full sounded really nice, deeper lows and a nice zing to the notes. For other heavier rock songs .. think AC/DC, Maiden, Zeppelin , Judas Priest etc I played the Jazz bass with neck pup on full and bridge about 60% on, tone on full. Again a different sound to my PBass that set well with the drums and had better clarity. I think it’s an improvement and I may of just become a Jazz bass convert !! My rig is my Tone Hammer 700 and Ampeg cabs and in front I run my Boss LMB3 to the GEB7 and then TC SparkBooster into amp input The Boss LMB3 is working well keeping level’s consistent and the Boss GEB7 is set with a slight dip in 50hz to remove boom, and a slight boost on 500hz The SparkBooster is left with gain off and level slightly above unity volume to give the input a very slight boosted input. All in all they work well together I did get my leg pulled by my band buddies regarding the name on the headstock “ Jazz” in a rock band !! But it worked well for JPJ
  15. I gig with two Player series PBass and my new Player Series Jazz All needed a decent setup by myself and they all sound very good, definitely good enough for gigging
  16. Think I’m going to stay with WHITE for now 👍
  17. Yep that’s my thoughts too but the Tort does look classy !!
  18. Ok folks so I’ve added a new pickguard and bridge do you prefer tort or white ( original )
  19. I don’t really get the “ampless” ideas etc ?? I don’t play large venues as we are a typical pub / club rock band and the PA is average but loud and mostly for vocals and kick drum. We take a guitar signal and my pass into the PA purely for the singers IEM ( only band member using them ) I love the sound of my amp / cab behind me and how it fits with the drums and guitar in small stages or setup spaces. I understand though the situation where bad backs and health takes us into a different direction and to keep enjoying our hobby we look at alternative solutions. Lozz … could you not get a band buddy to help with the setup / lifting etc and stay with a small cab and class D amp ? You have travelled a long road getting a sound you like
  20. I’ve just popped one in my Player PBass .. very nice pickups
  21. What is your best bass amp you’ve either owned in the past or currently use and for what reason it became your keeper ?? For me I’ve had from memory SVT CL via Ampeg 610 cab SVT 3 Pro PF800 V4B RI Ampeg BA110 ( home practice ) Ashdown ABM600 RM800 EVO II Orange LBT Orange Terror Bass 500 mk2 GK Legacy 800 Ashdown CTM100 Aguilar ToneHammer 700 The ToneHammer is my current working amp and my keeper at present !! The fact it runs to 2.67ohms is a bonus running my two Ampeg cabs. Some of the above were superb in their own way, some were moved on because new gear is good fun and you might just find that missing link. One thing I have learnt is mostly they all sounded similar and with an external preamp / EQ I could have made them all sound close to each other except the all valve amps. Some were average to say the least or tonally not a match for me and the band. What’s your list like and why did you change ?
  22. Yes if your amp head is rated to 4 ohms you can connect two 8 ohm cabs in total
  23. You’re welcome Jim Sadly I purchased 3 of these, two from one store and the third ( the one I sold to you ) from a different store. I was hoping the batch the one store had were all with the same issue. After buying three I concluded it’s the design as it is and not actually faulty. That aside it’s still what it is and there is a slight audio noise as the LED goes out. Sorry it didn’t work out but hopefully a full refund and the gift of a Keeley Bassist ( albeit not 100% perfect ) makes up for it.
  24. Greg have you tried it in front of your Tonehammer amp ? If so was it a good match ?
