I gigged the Ampeg SVT610 HLF and SVT CL for some time and it’s a perfect match Great rig

First gig of 2023 and it was at Ipswich Social Club Played for nearly 3 hrs with many new songs in the set and a good sound Three bookings secured for 2024 so they obviously liked us Ashdown CTM100 head performed amazingly well, great valve tone with 80% of set played using a pick and the rest fingers Very happy with the rig 🤟

The Pro Neo cabs are wide enough to take the ABM heads and sound good Light cabs and a step up from the RM series

I’m liking these now The 0.88 gives a little more flex for faster picking

It definitely suits a PBass and all valve amps for rock 👍

I hear that too although some finger players ( me ) tend to sound woolly as finger tips are too padded or soft ?? The difference from fingers to pick is noticeable to my band buddies and myself. To an audience less so as I think musicians listen to individual parts where as Joe Public listen to the complete sound and enjoy it but are unaware of the tiny nuances musicians hear

After using Ultex triangles and finding they tend to turn in my grip I’m trying these again Tortex Flex 1.0mm or 1.14mm Nice tone too and seem less “ slippy”

Yep I used original screws when I swopped mine. Huge improvement and stopped the enjoying grubscrew unwinding Plus they look good too

I have different rigs for different sized gigs .. all rigs heavy but all rigs sound great 👍

I’m back using Ultex Triangle 1.14mm There is a definite nice tone created using these picks and sound better than Tortex with my gear. They are very comfortable to hold and large so you don’t drop them !! Try as I may to get the better tone using fingers only it just doesn’t match the clarity and punch of the pick when running into an all valve amp ( CTM100)

I tried Elixir and for the high price I still found I was changing them albeit extended life but … I think a decent set of Nickel Roundwounds for circa £18 a set changed more frequently for me is a better solution and gives me a chance to clean up the fretboard and frets at the same time ( equally as important to changing strings ) Elixir are great and come with a hefty price and are never as bright sounding as fresh uncoated strings

I like Fender Pure Nickel or Nickel plated round wound strings They last me around 3 months with weekly use

I’m discovering the CTM100 bass head is definitely the best amp I’ve found for rock and it seems to be better suited to us pick players .. why ? The EQ adjustment is still fairly basic ( I think it’s been improved compared to earlier models ) and it has that warm full fat valve sound which played with fingers isn’t quite as punchy as some would want in a band context but .. Take a PBass and a pick and the amp comes alive with so much more EQ variations and makes a great rock combination. My ABM600 is far more versatile in EQ and volume sense and works great with various finger / pick methods but there is something about the CTM100 that just works when you grab a pick Ive read other people’s suggestion’s of pressing in all the tone buttons but that on my newer model didn’t seem right so Deep is out, Mid Shift is out and Bright is out, Mellow is out ( that one baffles me as Mellow in adds drive and bass, I think it works in reverse !! ) Using the rotary bass, mids, treble and cranking the MV to max ( recommend by Dave Green who designed it ) and using Input gain for volume sounds really good and a tone that you will not find in a hybrid but only in a full valve amp. Great Amp

Using the EQ settings in the image below and having the SHAPE button out I get an amazing rock tone with a pick played PBass The trick is to avoid “ mid” overload something a pick played PBass is strong at. The SHAPE out boosts bass and cuts mids and it really works well in a band context I wouldn’t use if finger style like that as way too woolly and boomy but use a pick and roundwounds and you’re in rock bass heaven 🤟

Also .. I still love the full tone of finger style and it’s handy I can use either method

I think an advantage of pick playing is clarity of tone and attack where the bass is crossing over into guitar like territory. This isn’t a failed guitarist playing bass but a good bass player adding bass and guitar like support to a band in particular one guitar type bands come to mind. I need to be a bassist and bassist / rhythm guitar player at times in our rock band to fill out the band sound during guitarist solos etc etc Finger style works too of course but it’s not quite the same as we all know

Funny thing I’ve gone full 360 on this and prefer the tone with a pick now ! Rock PBass and valve amp seem to be the ideal match to a pick tone

Roqsolid for mine and it’s great but they take around 4/5weeks to come

Funny thing I find with my ABM600 is input VU dial anxiety!! When I think I have it set right or just going into the red on loudest note the band plays and I look back and it’s hard over at times on lowest of notes ! Ashdown states it won’t hurt the amp but I wish it just had an input LED and the VU only on the output as per the CTM100 or the mk V They could use the input dial as a tuner instead 👍
