Hey folks I own the Ampeg SVT212AV cab and two Ashdown ABM210H cabs Both setups are good I use my CTM100 head with the two ABM cabs and the Ampeg I use at rehearsals as a single cab So what can I change to give me less cabs ( storage reasons ) but more speakers and still sensible carry weight etc ? Must be suitable for my CTM head to sit upon and sound good of course !! Ideas ??
-
I guess they no longer make them ? Sadly many of the BF cabs are not wide enough for the CTM100/ CTM300
-
What cab you using with the CTM head ?

Yep PMT have a lot of damaged or marked stock. I tend not to use them now because of multiple times sub standard goods have arrived

I think some finger players ( like myself ) have a softer warmer tone and definitely deeper compared to the pick. In a crowded guitar band I would imagine the pick would benefit the bass being heard but in my single guitar ( overdriven mostly ) band both work. As a compliment to the drums I think finger style tone has the edge for “fullness” There are finger style players with a tone a lot closer to the pick tone but that’s not me !

PMT have a B stock Ashdown ABM410H cab for £404 !! I was tempted but they are so heavy

Well … last rehearsal I decided to finger play the whole set instead of using a pick. Biggest challenge was The Trooper but I just about nailed it There is definitely something extra playing with fingers… a wallop of punch and depth.I’m now tempted to leave the pick in the case. Choices choices !!

Stubzy's Road Testz - Orange Terror Bass
BassAdder60 replied to Stub Mandrel's topic in Amps and Cabs
My first Terror V2 came faulty and shutdown, to be fair it had been knocked around in transit ( new ) My second Terror was ok but I didn’t like how dark it sounded so I sent it on its way. I wanted to like it but actually found the LBT a nicer sounding amp with more EQ options. I did like the warmth and drive tone from the Terror and it’s a very loud 500w amp -
Did you run your DI out with the button pressed in or out ? Im guessing Pre is button IN and post EQ is button out which seems to have a hotter output ?

I’ve flipped from Ultex to Toretex, to Clayton, to Gator, to Nylon, to big stubby, etc etc Im back using Ultex but in 0.88mm instead of 1.14mm I find I don’t drop Ultex picks and find the lighter gauge allows for faster picking. We have just added the Trooper to the set ( amazed how Steve Harris uses fingers to play that quickly) we play it fast too !! So the 0.88mm Ultex just skips nicely across the strings for fast songs. Tone is a little brighter too but it just works well with roundwounds and a PBass

I was considering the EVO V to go with my EVO IV … instead after talking to Ashdown they did me a great deal on the CTM100 head The EVO V does sound like a great amp and that custom front is really smart looking.

Question How do you run your master volume ? On my CTM100 I run it on max and adjust gain for final volume This gives lovely power tube warmth and growl I find yet keeps max clean headroom So are you an input gain up high and master volume to adjust final volume or How I run mine ? Just curious!

Friday night gig, not as many out as we would of liked, sign of the times I guess. Still the Ashdown rig had a good blast.

I’m now gigging the CTM100 head in our rock band Superb amp

I’m still using Fender Pure Nickel RW on my basses, nice sound and decent life / price
-
Bright, zingy string recommendations please
BassAdder60 replied to Mykesbass's topic in General Discussion
I found the Fender Pure Nickel RW were nice -
Funny thing last night I heard Stormzy last night on the TV after getting home from rehearsals and the bassist in his band was playing finger / thumb on a five string Jazz and it sounded great. However the drums / guitar were low in the mix so the bass was easily heard
-
I think it feels odd at first using a pick after using fingers. However it soon becomes natural and you don’t drop the pick. Use a triangle pick and you won’t drop them as often or ever again I use Ultex triangle 1.14

Yep I’m finding in our rock band ( mostly overdriven guitar ) that a pick played PBass has the right tone Fresh roundwounds help too I love finger style tone for the mellow stuff but it gets lost in the band in most songs unless I bring out the pick

Since I’ve been on my bass amp journey to find my ideal band sound I’ve really discovered the major difference between the isolated bass sound compared to the playing with band sound. At rehearsals last night I found that having a far brighter tone ( pick playing ) really made the notes stand out in the mix which was good as I like to be heard !! As a guitar, drum, bass, vocals band playing rock it’s crucial I don’t disappear into the background ( buried by the drums ) The CTM100 valve amp is definitely making a difference in the sound, a lovely tone for sure and just enough snarl to make it fit. I can now really see why certain genres the picked PBass with a valve amp is the perfect fit.

No worries.. there are many different sounds you can get from the ABM600 In particular it comes alive when you get the volume past 9 o clock I’ve gigged mine with two ABM210H cabs on an outside gig without pa support and master at 12 o’clock and it sounded great and full. Running the input gain so loudest notes just goes into the red is the preferred setting ( according to Dave Green ) People do crank it further but I found the note clarity suffered. The input gain level plays a part when using the valve drive as they are related when the drive is used. Many people say avoid the mid scoop Shape button out sound ( in a band it’s lost ) however I found using it and boosting the 340hz made all the difference. If you push the button in then pull back the 340 slider for a less honky tone !! I also find for finger style boosting the 1.2khz was a good thing for clarity For pick playing I pull it back a tad
-
I’ve always found the onboard compressor smothers the clarity of the amp Sounded better without or when using a simple Opto pedal front end The magic EQ slider on the ABM600 is the 340hz and used either pulled down ( shape button in ) or boosted ( Shape button out ) makes a world of difference to how it sits in a mix and the fullness of the tone The input gain is also affected by the EQ, the valve drive and the compressor

The store in Norwich has a small car park but the Cambridge store doesn’t

ABM210H x 2 works for me or SVT212AV cab on its own

I had the LBT for a while and it’s one of nicest Orange amps with a tube like feel Very loud for a 500w head and simple effective EQ control and a superb Optical Compressor which added grit the more it was increased There is an Orange bag that fits it ( not made for the LBT ) so if you need one I can look up the one I found that Orange recommended here you go found it .., https://orangeamps.com/product/gig-bags/ Pedalbaby / LBT
