1. This is the worst thread I have ever entered. Where's the door, I wanna get out ....
2.
I did it in 2005, and was really glad that I did. We got back together to celebrate what would have been Chris our guitarists 40th birthday - he died from a brain tumour in 2001. I left the band in less than amiable circumstances around 1992, and the reunion gave us all a chance to put some bad stuff aside (albeit temporarily with regard to one particular member) and remember Chris in a way we and his wife & children thought was appropriate. We had three rehearsals which went really well, and we ended up writing a song that was, in my opinion, the best thing we ever wrote. The gig itself was very emotional, especially for the guy that stood in for Chris on the guitar - he had replaced me on bass in the band & had been a good friend of Chris since school. We played really well & the crowd, which was full of people who used to follow us years ago, loved it. It was very special & something of a surprise to hear people singing along with songs I hadn't played for over a decade. Chris's wife & daughter loved it & it was great to reconnect with some old friends.
A very touching story!
3. I don't weigh basses, but I don't like any bass that I think of as 'heavy'. I definitely prefer lighter overall. My current bass seems ideal, I'll weigh it when I get home if I remember, before answering the poll. I don't like too light either! I think that a bass has to exert a bit of pull on the strap.
4. Wow, I've greatly admired that bass in the past! If I had the cash, the space and an 'understanding wife*' I'd be up for that. Sadly I only have the latter. * By understanding, I mean "understand this Mrs G, I'm getting another bass ..."
5. Many years ago I was going to sell a decent acoustic guitar to a young guy at my church who seemed to have some genuine songwriting talent. He was off to Bible college and didn't have a ton of money to his name. I turned up at his house and it just seemed like the right thing at the time to just give it away instead. It's a bit different with family, but my 13 year old nephew is keen on music and so far I have given him a guitar, a tiny amp, a medium amp (yesterday!) and a Pandora 4.
6. I suffer with GAS, mostly with guitars. I honestly feel that my Bass gas has been cured with my Jazz V. It is too perfect for words in every dept and is the bass equivalent of Mrs Golchen as I feel totally married to it now with no sign of divorce or 'adultery' with another bass.
7. For me, get a Fender Jazz V out and the fat lady is singing .....
8. Years ago the local Cash Converters had a Washburn N4 geetar for £300. More than I had spare at the time. Also, I went in one and they had a Taylor acoustic in a case for £500. It looked a beauty, but foolishly I nipped home to check the value. I shot back but it was gone It was a £1700 model .... Oh well, I'm damn sure it must have been nicked anyway.
9. If I had more spare cash I'd happily take this as my no2/spare bass, but unfortunately I'm just about to blow a big wedge on a PRS geetar .....
10. No price and I'm not interested. People should just Man up and stick a tag on it.
11. My experience of guitar amps is that bass sounds crap through them. I have that small Vox battery amp and it's horrible for bass. I can't recall how much it was, but I got a Roland Microcube that works on batteries and I absolutely love it! the sounds are really great (in my opinion)
12.
btw - the 'britain's got talent 'link on the aurora site has an amusing youtube video of some poor bloke with a pushy mother-in-law. He plays an LED-equipped ibanez geetar & gets totaly slagged off by Simon Cowell. Perhaps he's intimidated by anyone that can play an instrument .
In all fairness to Cowell, the guy was VERY average in terms of musicianship, it was pretty much just a bloke with a flashy (OTT!) guitar.
13. I got LEDs put on my Chapman stick by SIMS earlier this year. I dropped it off in person and Martin showed me all around the workshop and explained in detail all the features of one of his Enfield basses. It was a very interesting trip and they did a great job. A+ all round from me. Martins a great bloke. Quite expensive though!
14. It's all so subjective anyway. The bottom line is either someone bonded with the bass or they didn't. I'm not saying that it isn't a useful idea though.
15. I don't get compressors??? Forgive my ignorance but it just seems like a nuance remover?
16. I often get up to Music Live.
17.
.... feel free to rest it on either pickup or the lower strings. Alex
That's pretty much what I do. You get a different sound and feel anchoring over the two pups, and I like that variation.
18. I am totally in love with everything about my Fender RH Jazz V custom shop bass. Weight, feel, playability, looks, tones. It is 100% perfect, and has improved my playing. Bass Nirvana.
19. For me it's not so much the high bass that's the problem, I hate the look when you have to have that 'limp wrist' look just to pluck the strings.
20. A plec generally gives a more aggressive attack, which can be useful if everyone is turned up to 11. Personally, I've never used a plec on a bass. Just doesn't appeal.
21. The Human League cool!?!?!? Don't make me laff. One of the crappest bands ever. Some 80's music is still enjoyable, but I don't think that most of it could be described as cool. Probably the worst period in music history.
22. I luckily nailed a Custom shop Fender Jazz V Reggie Hamilton off eBay earlier this year - perfect condition but half price. It is the greatest bass ever!!!! (well, in my opinion!) I can honestly say that I am cured of bass GAS forever. Yeah, I realise how wrong that sounds.
23.
More 70s than 80s but I never liked ELO at the time but have now come to think they were a rather great band.
ELO were my first 'favourite band' as a kid, and Out of the Blue was the first album I ever bought. It's full of classic songs!
24. I recently swapped to Stainless Steel on both guitar and bass as I seem to be allergic to nickel (only taken about 25 years to figure that out!). Sound fine to me and I'm definitely sticking with them!
25. Generally, I dislike 80s music immensely. Horribly plastic stuff. Having said that I thought that Tears for Fears were WAY above most others. The songs were great, the production amazing and RO's voice was really interesting - you could always tell it was him and no-one else.
