1. Your thread title remind me of that old joke: "mummy, mummy, I'm going round in circles!" "be quiet or I'll nail your other foot to the floor ....."
2. I believe that Jeff Beck's superb 'guitar shop' album was just guitar, keys and drums. Dream Theater don't have a bass pla.......... oh no, hold on, it's just that he's always mixed out of the CDs.
3.
Mostly roots but I have been known to throw in a fifth if I'm feeling adventurous.
That just about sums me up as well!
4. Before I was a bass player, I was blown away by Stanley Clarke's sound on the CD 'Find out'. I'd never been aware of active basses before and it sounded so amazing. Not surprisingly as it was Stanley, the bass is really upfront in the mix and totally driving the songs.
5. I'm not keen on that finish for instruments myself, although it looks pretty amazing as a block! Never seen that before.
6. Dil Katz, Stu Hamm, Geddy Lee, Billy Sheehan
7. Nick Beggs has been a well-known Stick player for many years! I saw him playing stick with Iona back in the 90's.
8. Hmnnnn ............ Dave Grohl is ace, but I can't say I'm a fan of Josh Homme. I'd prefer to hear more of JPJ with drummer + Nick Beggs on stick personally.
9. I have no objection to anyone charging what they like for any given job, it's then up to the punter as to whether they want to bite. However, I think that it's pretty poor to stick the wrong prices on the web. If you are using the internet for any kind of sales then I really think that you should keep stuff like that up to date, it's not like it needs changing every day, and you could always just put 'call for prices'.
10.
.... my precious French-made Lag Louisiane
That's a peach of a guitar! Tinman I used to have a Patrick Eggle Vienna Pro - lovely guitars!
11. I've just realised that I have no idea which fingers I use on my plucking hand, and what the others are doing on their time-off! I'll have to play infront of the mirror when I get home tonight.
12. I'm another who doesn't approve of backing tracks for live performances. If you are going to do that then why bother showing up at all? Just send a couple of people to jump around with instruments not plugged in and bung a CD on! I've always thought that part of the joy of a live band is the 'no frills' energy that you can get from a complex track pared down to the essentials.
13. I tortured my first electric guitar to death. various things from refinishing to refretting to converting the singlecut shape to a double cutaway. All with zero experience and no research. Pulled all the wiring out and then lost my diagram for rewiring as well. Does that count?
14. I really fancy one of these but you are too far away.
15. If slapping was banned I'd have to give up bass. It just feels like sooo much fun to play like that - not that I'm very good at it! I believe that there is a right and wrong time for it though.
16. Abe is amazing. I'm really into that sort of music, it's my main thing on bass to be honest! (And what I'd LOVE to be doing with a band)
17. I think that for the most part you can't go wrong with Lakland. Having said that, I think that no other manufacturer has the vibe and history of Fender, and if you need that then there's only one brand ....
18.
The Fender Reggie Hamilton has a P and a J pickup http://www.fender.com/customshop/instrumen...rtno=0158400806
Ya beat me to it! That's what I've got (it's in my sig). Best bass ever!
19. Greetings Gerry. Welcome. At 46 I'm amongst the oldest at most forums I attend, but I'm glad to see that bass players keep on going! Yet to play with a band myself though ....
20.
I was at a guitar shop in Bolton recently with my wife and they had a couple of Road Worn guitars on the wall for £800+. She sneered at them at said "800 quid and it looks like sh*te! Why on earth would anyone want to buy that?" I didn't have an answer. But then again she plays the flute.
I went with the wife to the local guitar shop, specifically to look at a roadworn strat in the flesh. She took one look and said "you're not paying £750 quid for that!!!" Damn! this is why I never (usually) let her anywhere near a guitar shop! I think that (Good) relics look 10 times better than horrible shiny new instruments.
21. Back from hols bump with new price. UK only - can't get my head around posting abroad!
22.
Do you have Sept-Oct 1990 issues?
That's a very specific request! Any reason why? Unfortunately, the ones I do have are probably 1978 thru the 80s.
23. I'd like to read that as well!
24. I always hated NME with a passion. Sh*te rag about sh*te music. It's a publishing tragedy that SOUNDS and Melody Maker died off and NME survived somehow. As a yoof I worshipped the altar that was SOUNDS. I probably still have a big pile of them in the loft ....
25. Active gives you more oomph. Nuff said.
