1. Anyone see the older guy with fair hair slapping a bass very effectively (on the Rotosound stand?) He's always at these shows, and always gets a crowd to hear his 'noodling'. I had a chat to try and get some pointers, but since getting home I just can't get the really cool fretting hand dampening that he makes look so easy. For what it's worth, I rather like the cacophony of sound that you get at music shows, it's all part of the atmosphere!
2. When I read the thread title I though that you meant what was the point in having a keyboard player!?!? I don't play live, but if I did I don't think I'd bother with FX at all.
3.
.... and really going for it when im nearly 60..
Sheesh, you telling me he's not even 60!! That is a well worn in face! Still, I'm no chick magnet myself these days so I'd better keep my trap shut!
4. For a decent bass like that I'd get a pro job done rather than bugger it up yourself (no offense intended!). I'd ditch the roundwounds as well
5.
It's a shame you sanded the neck, I've been waiting for a rosewood + blocks RI Jazz to turn up.
I wouldn't see that as a problem myself? I've never seen a neck wrecked by sanding, it just means (generally) that it plays better. Kind of in keeping with the old vibe anyway.
6.
I'll be handling the bass duties at the Guitar Idol show on Saturday morning. Some scary players on this year and some wicked tunes. You can see me getting a full on roasting.. 12 different guys, 12 different tunes... full on.
You guys did a brilliant job backing again Dave! I really love the guitar idol competition. I'd be interested who you liked playing with best. There was some great stuff going down. Personally I really like the rock n roll vibe of the brazillian guy with the white strat who was in the final last year as well, he just owns the stage like no one else! My favourite overall was Daniele Gottardo, but I don't know who won yet as I couldn't stay till 4.15. I hung around for 5 hours and could have stayed longer, but I was irked by the excessive parking fees. For bass playing only I guess the show isn't so great, but as a multi-instrumentalist it was heaven! Got to meet and chat with one of my biggest guitar heroes again - Guthrie Govan. Also I really liked Nick d'virgilio's drum session on the main stage. All in all a great day out!
7.
..... i seem to have become slightly obsessed by sex and death.
You have much to learn grasshopper. I'm gonna donate mine to science.
8.
I'm thirty (my best days are behind me) and I've always played an instrument, always listened to music but never been in a band.
You're worried at 30!!!! I'm 47
9. I'd love to play in a band myself, but for me the fear factor is just too great. I don't know why, but my standard of playing (all instruments) goes right down when I'm with other musicians. What I need is a few people I know to just go and make some noise and try to get into it. Unfortunately my only two musician friens both live about 100 miles away from me. I wish I'd done it when I was younger, my biggest regret in life.
10. I had a bad case of Jazz GAS, so I looked and looked and got a real good un ....... and I LOVE IT!!!! Best bass ever (well, out of those I've tried) It's a Reggie Hamilton V, as shown in my avatar.
11. I concur that singlecut basses are indeed the sperm of the devil (to quote Paula Yates). The only time I would be glad to have one would be if I needed to burn more wood just to survive.
12. Looks pretty cool, although I'm not too keen on the big headstock of the 70s. Just noticed: no trem so it definitely wouldn't suit me. Best of luck in shifting though.
13. I'd love to help, but running with scissors really isn't a good idea.
14. Is there any way to darken a rosewood fretboard? (without damaging it) Also, what's the best stuff to use on a dry fretboard? Lemon oil?
15.
who wants my wife she cooks clean anything you want
Are you sure that's a wife? Mine doesn't do either of those, maybe I should take her back for a refund.
16. ??? all glasses are 3D, otherwise you couldn't wear them. Signed Mr Pedantic.
17. Wow! Tickets are bl**dy expensive these days! First time I saw Dream Theater it was £12. It's a bit too far for me I'm afraid. Great band though.
18.
It's also Flemish for Golden Shower. P
Yeah, that was a bonus!
19. I guess it takes a while for these sort of sites to get going. Interesting to see that I share a birthday with 4 famous bassists - even if I've only heard of one of them! Best of luck with it.
20. I agree that the guitar version looks great, I've got a Parker Fly Deluxe and it smokes!!!!
21.
Why should the devil have all the good d-tuners??
Good one! Great looking bass there.
22.
According to their website there's a second hand 5-string Fly at the Bass Gallery. Maybe a trip to London is in order?
You'd need to call first. I've dropped in a couple of times only to find my main point of interest sold. It was there last time I went but that was a couple of months ago. Bit of a trek from Reading!
23. Incredibly ugly looking. A bass with a big fat arse.
24. It's your bass so you can do what you want with it, but if it was me I'd definitely keep it like that!
