Hi bassists, I'm a guitarist and I want to learn the bass. I want a six string bass and I don't want to have to learn any new tunings.
Sounds to me like you are a guitarist who DOESN'T want to learn the bass!
I play guitar primarily but I've never seen bass tuning as an issue, why not just dive in and see how it goes with a more regular tuning?
Great bassist who doesn't seem to get talked about all that much. I was just watching him on YouTube a couple of days ago. I even have Backdoor on Vinyl!
To all you guys who play a 6 string (or 7) - why do you like the extra string(s)?
I have to admit that I play 5 strings rather than four because I like those extra low notes, but I'm not quite sure how useful the extra high string is? I'm not being critical here at all, I'm just trying to understand the mindset. For some reason I really like the look of 6 string basses, but I'm not sure that I'd find the extra string particularly useful. I also tend to think that you need to be able to play pretty well to get away with having one - or do you disagree?
I hope it's not a daft question, I'm still something of a bass newbie!

If you tell us what service the item was posted by I can tell you what you can expect. I've used pretty much them all.
I'm considering a Gecko bass from Warmoth, so according to their website they use UPS Express. Any experience of them?
I know that there are a few threads around with regards to costs of importing from the US, but I was just wondering how exactly you are charged. Do you get sent a bill at a later date or something?
If I had a guitar, Hmmmmnnnnn .............................. Hold on! I just remembered I got loads
A few extras not on that old pic now, American strat, cheapo thru neck, tele copy.
Ultimate playability goes to the Fly, But what I hanker after is relic strats.
Ooohhh! I'm having palpatations just looking at those pictures!
I would love to own that, but I just don't have the kind of cash that you are looking for. Would you accept a small child in part exchange? I have a choice of four.
Not 'Crap' at all, infact Shergold's are marvelous basses...
The Marathon was a good ol' British bass of the late 70's.
They were played by that bloke in Genesis I seem to remember.
Ooops! at least that explains why it was sweet to play!
I don't really know if it's a 'crap' bass or not - a friend of mine had a Shergold. I HATED the look of the thing, so ugly that I could never own it - but it was amazingly easy to play, like nothing else I've ever tried.
What do you have, or want, which is utterly useless?
For me it has to be a custom ball-end holder. Just for the entertainment value!
??? what exactly is it???
I was just wondering what you guys would nominate as the best bass you have ever owned or played?
I have a headless status 5 string at the moment, and I really like it, but I just don't think that it's my 'ideal' bass. I'm looking for ideas as to decent kit that people have bonded with in some way. pics allowed!
Yeah, done that and there are tons, most of which are poor. I was just wondering if anyone knew of anything specific as I was getting bored looking through lots of stuff that was not very useful.
I've got some of the basics of slapping going now, but I was just wondering if you lot had seen any useful videos on YouTube that show how to get some of the techniques down? not just great playing, but maybe something that helps with how to do it a bit.
Whew! just waded through the whole thread for the first time. I have to say that I found 99% of the basses here within to be totally ugly. Having said that, a few were very 'interesting' - I particularly liked the one string bass!
I recently found this bass pic, and for me it is just the best looking bass I have ever seen! I've downloaded it and open it every day just to have another look - pretty sad! especially as I don't even play 6 string. Anyway, here is is, and if I win the lottery I'm getting one exactly like this even if I can'y play it:
Note: just realised that that one is a fretless, but I'd get a fretted.
LOL! I know it isn't boring, but can I be a bit more specific:
I've been really trying to get my bass playing going recently. I've never actually played bass with anyone else, so I tend to 'play along' to mp3 files of stuff that I have chord sheets for. Here's the thing - I'm fine with mid-tempo or faster numbers, but when I play something really slow and simple I get so bored and usually flip to the next track instead after a bit. I was wondering if this sort of thing would be more bearable when actually playing 'live' with other people or whether I'm just not really cut out for bass??
Thoughts?
actually, bass is well down the list for me.
I play electric guitars, acoustic guitars with alternate tunings, Chapman stick, keyboards and then bass comes last!
I'd love a go at drumming. Never even sat behind a kit!
