1. Hey Grandad, What flats do you use? I'm a convert to flats - I have tried the Fender, La Bella, D'Addario Chromes and the Black Nylon wound flats. Which are your favouri tes?
2. Is anyone else going to this? I love having a mooch round these local shows - you never know your luck - maybe a bargain to be had................. Also there is a decent coffee and burger van outside (usually) and not charging silly prices. http://www.b-visible.co.uk/businesses/72/mojo.html ....and only £3 in. Maybe see you there. Geoff
3. Nice instrument! GLWTS.
4. Bought some tuition boks from Martyn, all good, prompt delivery. Thanks, Stompbox
5. Why not get a more interesting bass & case - say a BC Rich thing or Flying V bass or similar - then get a shaped sidecar & have it fitted to a Harley Davidson 12,000,000cc hog? Would be much more interesting - plus you could get to wear interesting leather "butch" biker outfits (as if you needed an excuse). ( BTW I used to take a Selmer Goliath in the back of a mini minor regularly to gigs, ........ but that was a while ago)
6. Andy just bought a book from me - Standing In The Shadows of Motown. Great guy, good communicator - deal with confidence. Cheers, Stompbox.
7. Well said/expressed, Beer of the Bass....
8. Just had my new Lamborghini Aventador delivered - negligible bootspace, but hey, it's a nice drive so will have my bass, amps & cabs delivered & set up onstage by a contractor as required..................
9.
Hi All, I have been playing bass longer that I wish to think about and I have always used roundwounds. I usually use Ernie Ball 50/105 gauge. I am not au fait with flats and wonder what the pros and cons are of using them. I play classic rock and blues and weapon of choice in a Fender Jazz Bass, I am a finger player. Any thoughts, view etc appreciated. Dougie
Hey Dougie - what you put in your original post is a description of my bass "career" - jazz bass, many years, roundwound strings, and (I don't know if this applies to you) a pick rather than finger player.. I recently (12months or so ago) discovered flats. They are tremendous. Easy on the fingers, and if you get some nylon tapewounds, (not cheap though) they can also have a nice bright tone, not just the more mellow tones normally found with flat wound strings. I'm now a finger rather than pick player too................... I'm a convert. Cheers, Stompbox.
10. I've always been a Jazz fan, and I've replaced the neck pickup volume control with a pull switch pot in the electronics on the so that when you pull it out it puts the two pickups on together in series giving you a big P bass sound. Two in one, as it were - excellent. http://www.guitar-mod.com/wiring/j_series.gif
11.
Yeah, if you add yellow in that situation you end up playing the greens ;-)
Oh very good!!
12. Wow. Thanks for the link. Amazing & talented.
13. Well I think you just maybe need a break. I'm in my early sixties & have played with all sorts of bands (Including dance bands). I've principally played bass but diverted into lead vocals & guitar for a while. Oh yes & quite a bit of rifle & clay pigeon shooting. Guess what? Tinnitus...... for years & years. Bummer. But never mind - I'm still keen on bass & playing - regardless ---- it's what I do. Just chill out & come back to it.
14. Just came across this competition - although I've been a member of and a big fan of Basschat for several years. Great idea - a shame that the numbers of votes are so few. I did try to leave comments on the Soundcloud page but it didn't go on - do you have to be a member/sign in to leave a comment???
15. Very nice - have a bump on me!
16. Hi - This excellent book about the legendary James Jamerson up for sale including the 2 cds. Used but pretty good condition. £15 including (UK) postage.
17. Peavey Foundation Fretless bass guitar up for sale - £175. It’s a really excellent instrument – made in the USA with a superb maple neck and rosewood fretboard, the scale length is 34”. The neck is fitted to the body like Fender guitars, with a four bolt mounting plate and it has a microtilt adjustment. The bass is fretless, and it has fret markers set into the rosewood fingerboard. The electrics are as on a Fender Jazz bass with two passive pickups each with a volume control and an overall passive tone control. The bass dates to 1995 from the serial number (08779861), and it’s a really good player, the weight is nice & easy at 3.6 kilos, and the neck has a lovely feel to it. It has hardly any marks on it at all - almost like new. A really good example of a guitar that's nearly 20 years old, the machine heads are all good, and the neck and fretboard are straight and true with no marks or wear. I’m up in Morecambe near Lancaster, and you’re welcome to come over & see & try the bass before buying, alternatively I do go over to Rochdale pretty well every week for a couple of days now so you could see it there.
