Why don't bass companies do sound samples of their basses..
throwoff replied to bubinga5's topic in Bass Guitars
It is pretty meaningless, you could record hundreds of samples for each bass and still never get one that is 'the sound' whoever is buying it wants. It's a bit like when you go to a music store they often plug you into a VERY expensive high end amp when you want to try a bass so you hear it in the best way you can. I always make sure I ask to play through the most similar amp to my own rig the store has, failing that the cheapest piece of rubbish they have. If it sounds good through that it will most likely sound good through my amp! A good guitarist friend of mine a few years back in Sound Control tried a guitar for some time through a Mesa Dual Rec and 4x12 and fell in love and was about to part with the cash, I convinced him to plug into the Line 6 Spider they had in there because it was the amp he used at home and he completely changed his mind, decided what he actually wanted was a Dual Rec. -
I only use 1 sort of pick and always have .96 Dunlop Delrins. That is pick of the Gods! Although I rarely use one nowdays, much prefer my fingers.

Hey Sam, I personally have a big soft spot for the LX. Really powerful mids with a great range. It says you are in Lancashire, last time I was up that way (Morcambe to be precise) I saw a lovely green high gloss 5 string one in Promenade music. According to their site it's still in stock, might be worth going and checking one out, I always find there is quite a lot lost with your average youtube etc sound clips.

A lot of younger bassists (who are going to be looking at this price class) wouldn't know a Masumoku if it came up to them and politely introduced itself! I am interested to hear from someone who has played one.

http://www.fleabass.com/ The Street Bass. An absolutely insane MSRP for that thing... If its even a little bit good for that money a new PU and set of electronics mean you could have a string through body bass in a frankly funky colour for what? 350?

It might just be me but I am the only person who finds it a little bit funny that Modulus renamed this bass the FU?
I do need to learn :/ I will probably end up asking my teacher to show me how it's done =3
Best thing you can do. I find restringing quite theraputic Learning your instrument is just as important when you first start as learning to play it. Learn how to change the action, how to clean the fingerboard and so on. It will make it far more pleasant an experience and help you keep at it. Mind you I am one of those people that takes almost everything I own to bits eventually to see how it all works!! Oh and you can get strings cheaply but investment is everything. A good quality set will normally sound better, last much, much longer and most importantly for a new player feel nicer. The last thing you want is a cheap set that rust after a couple of weeks and hurt your fingers! I am not saying spend 50 quid on a pack but 15/20 is a good figure.
I was struggling with the VM as it had MUCH heavier strings than the PW. Was going to get her restrung, but since I decided to trade her in I haven't needed to shell out the extra cash.
Just want to check that this statement didn't mean you would pay a shop to restring it for you? If so STOP! Learn to do it yourself, I feel terrible for any kid I see in a shop paying 5 quid for a restring and getting palmed off with whatever strings have been on the shelf the longest for another 15.

I have heard of this company before... If I recall the endorsement results in "trade price" strings which are only a tad under a set of roto's or Ernie Balls off the internet.

Real? Refin? what is it!!! Look at the photo of the bridge, the strings are not at the right angle are they... or am I going squiffy?

For sheer noiseporn try a EH Bass Blogger. I love mine to bits, it is probably the only 1 part of my entire set up I wouldn't change. Simple, pretty cheap and MAD sound!
Apparently Hetfield and Ulrich deliberately mixed down the bass on AJFA as some sort of mean trick on Newsted although some say it was because they were still grieving for Cliff Burton. I think the former is probably closer to the mark as they made Newsted go through all sorts of unpleasant initiation rituals according to a biography I read. Makes me laugh that there's a bass tab book for AJFA as I really can't hear ANY bass on the album! From the Black Album onwards though I can hear the bass perfectly well, especially the aforementioned as the Alembic cuts through (Newsted switched to Sadowskys in the mid 90s)
I also heard this story, in fact the poor bass mix is so well known a movement does exist which remixed these with the bass back up at a decent level (alledgedly from the masters, which is plausable considering the quality) under the moniker 'And Justice for Jason' If it pleases the court, exhibit A -

If you want to take the Rockstar school of though then a large quantity of drugs will work But seriously, I had a similar thing happen to me, I started to play 6 string and to my shame even Ukelele more than the bass. I just dropped everything for about 3/4 months and when I decided to play again what was the first thing I picked up? My bass! A break can be really good for you musically.

Funny thing the second hand market! Some brands just are not worth the value of the parts second hand it seems (Eden, Warwick and G&L spring to mind) other things hold their value incredibly well despite the low initial output (Squier VM basses are a good one!) It's all peaks and troughs, same as how a couple of years back you could get a HW Strat for about 400 quid while the tele was closer to 600! Now the strat is going back up again and the tele is a bit less in vogue.

I think I read in Bass guitar mag that he got the bog oak from the bottom of the river in Frankfurt when it was being dredged! The dredger pulled up a 9,500 year old piece of oak and he decided to make basses from it. Bottom one on here is quite an example of it!
