Yep, a few months ago I damaged my arm/wrist, so at one gig our singer (who plays guitar) played bass. He said afterwards how difficult it was, and that he still viewed it as an instrument that went boom in the background, but now realised that keeping that boom where it`s meant to be is a lot more difficult than it seems. He also said that I make it look so easy, which is I suppose a compliment.
I've been fortunate enough to have that experience too. My band seems to understand what I contribute and it's amazing how quickly things fall to bits if/when I stop playing or (on rare ocassion) have had a gear-related 'moment'.
If you can find one, and it's big if at the moment as they were discontinued a while back, then I'd recommend a TC Electronics Nova Dynamics (ND-1).
+1 for the TC. I used to use an EBS but find the TC does the job better with more flexibility (two separate compression engines, or use one as a limiter in series). I run it as the first thing in chain direct from the bass - I like the fact that the rest of the board gets a consistent signal even when I'm being less than consistent! In my experience, it also helps smooth things out for octave effects. I'm not sure of the efficacy of running a compressor in the loop as you'd get both compressed and uncompressed signals to the amp, which to my mind defeats the object of what a compressor is trying to achieve, but finer minds that me may be able to shed more light/correct my line of thinking At the end of the day no-one can really tell you what will work for you, just offer their take on it. Unfortunately that means there's no substitute for trying out a few options! Best of luck in your quest.

Covers bands "openers" what do you start with?
It certainly makes people take notice
Same here for the covers band I'm in - cracking opener. -
I currently use Warwick Red Label (45-105). Pondering over trying Dr Lo-Rider steels. Any input or opinions ?
I used to use Warwick Black Labels in the same gauge and have moved on to Sunbeams (on my jazz) and Lo-Riders (on my Stingray 5). I think, like pretty much all of the replies so far, that there's a limit to how much other's experience can tell you as string choice is so personal but I really like the Lo-Riders. They are expensive, which would be a pain if you didn't get on with them. What is it you want that you're not getting from the Red Labels?
Her Majesty the Queen Mother was nodding along to our sprightly jazz interpretation of Jesu Joy Of Man's Desiring when I misplaced a low C and detonated her colostomy bag.
I bow once more to your ability to paint such wonderful pictures with words, Skankdelvar. The Groom of the Stool, looking forward to an uneventful afternoon of musical light entertainment, must've had his work cut out once you let the brown note go.

Try Vintage and Rare in London, mate. For some reason they're very rarely 'in stock' on the web site but worth calling them. Last time I saw one in there it was £150, which should give yuo a prcie to compare against Tonefactor.
I'm assuming you meant to type GS112? I think you would loose sonically because a 15 would sound different to your current cab, which you like. Those 12's put out a lot of nice bass so, with the exception of a BF Compact, I'm not sure that a 15 would do any better.
Oh dear - yes, GS112 That makes a lot of sense. The setup I have now does seem to work very well for my purposes.
Oh, & get entering the photo comp (sticky in Off Topic).
I keep looking at that and thinking 'if only I had more time...'

Evenin' all, Just out of curiosity... I run two 1 x 12s - an Aguilar NS112 on top of an NS112NT and a Genz Benz Shuttle 6. I really like the sound and portability and have no burning desire to change anything, but would anything be gained/lost sonically by swapping the bottom cab for a 15? Obvious downside re: weight/size. Anyone out there gigging with a 1x15 + 1x12 setup?
