  1. hi yes, that switch meets the service spec (3A 240V AC) - hopefully it won't be supplied with the switch manufacturer's name emblazoned on it ! if you've previously serviced the switch yourself (and avoidied injury!), replacing a latched version like this (5 tags) should be fine. You'll need to find suitable supply points for the internal LED (9-24V AC or DC - i'd choose DC, if poss - the voltage range shown implies that the LED is already fitted with a current-limiting resistor - check polarity required, using eg. PP3 battery and a 2k7 (ono) resistor, in series) Take all necessary precautions to make safe and secure connections between the switch tags and preamp cabling - insulated boots on push-fit spade terminals, or heatshrink wrap over soldered joints. I see your solder-sucker in the photo - i'm sure you know the score! As always, if you intend to open the equipment and work on the wiring, you do so entirely at your own risk! Good luck with the repair!
  2. No worries - thanks for the info & testing offer The board is complete and functions as hoped, so i'm pleased with initial impressions. There are some practical issues with connectors to which i need to give additional thought now - i want to make the board 'drop-in' as far as possible to ease installation and the very fine wires in the Sinsonido are going to be a challenge in that respect Beta testing for this prototype is all lined up thanks, and hopefully will take place as soon as i've sorted the connector issues Would you be able to post a photo of the back of your Sinsonido with the 2 (i believe) cover plates removed giving a reasonably sharp/lit image of the existing board & controls in place? I'll need to see what will have to be done to adapt the new circuit layout into your version of the Sinsonido Thanks
  3. Using a suitable type of wood, and aligning the grain, to fill a hole for redrilling has nothing to do with "sonic difference", and everything to do with ensuring that the new drilling and screw fitting process goes smoothly, and is as close to achieving the same accuracy and stability of the drill and screw action as with the original work (this is especially important to accurately and securely locate something as technically demanding as these two parts under great string tension)
  4. are you hoping to repair the existing switch - or just replace with a new one, which contains a green led? is the work going to be carried out by a suitable tech (whether you or someone else)?
  5. ...although you'd want to match grain direction (and close match to wood type) to fill visible holes for 'cosmetic' reasons, i believe that the reasons for doing so when you just wish to redrill are to do with making the wood in the filled hole more 'homogenous' with the original surrounding material, so that the drill, and subsequent screw, cut through the wood with minimum divergence from the intended path i think that its probably more important that the wood you use to fill the holes is a closer match to the density and nature of the maple, than the colour/ grain effect. Personally, i'd source an offcut of something suitable and chisel a few thin dowels, very slightly oversize at the protruding end, and then woodglue & mallet them in. finish off with a clean chisel cut across the protruding 'dowel', to enable a good start to the drilling of the new hole ...i used to know this stuff, but now i understand that my 'grey matter' contains a lot of unfilled holes...
  6. Intriguing combination of function there! Can you get close enough to the mic without it being on a boom? ...and impressive tall grey speaker cab in the rear - is that a Zanussi 3x 10" ? 😉
  7. ...quick update to say that a prototype replacement board for the original Aria version now has all the parts soldered in, and wiring is almost finished Once complete, the board will be 'beta tested' and if satisfactory I'll post the schematic, and then make a copy (for @GetFletch, if their Sinsonido version matches)
  8. Getting access to the preamp controls is a little more involved than removing the head from the combo - just sayin'
  9. hi Paul ...a couple of observations here... the clip led can be triggered from several different stages along the signal path in the preamp section; there are also a few Trim pots amongst those stages its quite possible that your gain-adjust/clip test, between your 2 amps, is not comparing like-with-like (ie it could just be a difference in setup whenever/wherever the two amps were commissioned) there is obviously an issue with the Master Volume (not ruling out a link with the relative gain setting issue) - the Vol pot could be affected by wear, dust, or influence by possible degrading (if it is an early amp) of the electrolytic capacitor feeding the signal to the pot so the best scenario is that you just have a 'dirty' Vol pot (which might be cleanable with Deoxit type spray) and the gain difference is just build/setup variation - a more serious scenario is that the Vol pot and/or electrolytic caps (possibly many) have started needing to be replaced the second scenario will need to be confirmed and repaired by a Mark bass authorised tech (preferably) you might just be able to gain enough access to the Vol pot body to apply cleaning spray to see if its a scenario 1 issue, first of all (the construction of the amp hardware and combo installation however makes access look to be er, 'challenging'!) hope this helps your decision-making
  10. ...try am*z*n:- (i think you mean 'with 2 parallel rings', btw)
  11. ...do you mean like this? I get mine from either am*z*n or eb*y. still working fine after more than 10 years
  12. yep, same initial reaction to the 1st intro - then I started to enjoy, even tho' completely out of my usual 'comfort zone' stand out for me, on 1st pass, was Wake the Breathing Night, but several others lit up for me, and i'll be interested to see if/how my perception changes over a week of listening thanks for setting up - inspired idea! [Edit: listened on phones, so probably at higher 'volume' than I would use on the home-Fi]
  13. hi Dave, greetings from an old codger in his 70s - never too late to start enjoying playing the bass. If you're handy with a uke, you might be interested in checking out bass ukes too - have a wander on You tube for demos of Ubass or similar Friday I'm in Love - great track, one of my faves too hope you enjoy the banter amongst the basses cheers. sandy
  14. ...the math modelling highlighted that D-K results were based on imperfectly related variables; what's left is a truism based on self-perception and -bias; we can either redefine D-K to be this 'new' relation, or we can give it a new name - maybe the 'Gallien Krueger' effect, in honour of @neepheid's stirling work on that Ad earlier? ...meanwhile, back to the topic...
  15. ...there's a helpful 'takeaway' comment at the end of that paper: "Incidentally, Vincent argues that this shows that there is a Dunning-Kruger effect, because people are biased, but that’s it’s just a different effect from the one in the literature. Knowing more doesn’t make people less biased: Everyone’s equally biased. I’m saying this means we have a different effect, but the argument is just about whether we shift the meaning of Dunning-Kruger or use a different label."
  16. sorry to be the bearer of bad news - i'd offer to let you shoot the messenger, but i'm already shot ...wrt messrs Dunning&Kruger, they must feel a certain vindication now, when they see people still quoting and applying a debunked 'Effect' 😉
  17. the last i heard, the 'Dunning Kruger Effect' has been debunked and more people are able to guage their own competence reasonably well, compared to those who might think themselves more capable than the evidence supports realistic comparison will involve plenty of practice - not just in playing but in listening, and in thinking, too comparison isn't compulsory, of course - so if you're playing for your own enjoyment then b*gger the 'botherers'!
  18. 'Bolt-on' neck Vampyre guitar Supplied with 'Fright' case ...is Halloween due, by any chance?...
  19. sounds like a good way to broaden one's musical horizons, as you say I'm not familiar with book club procedure - is the plan for you to write a short review after listening, and invite comments on the same album from other listeners? cheers
  20. hi Andy ...a good range of experience plus a wide variety of gear you have there - sounds like an interesting and enjoyable journey this far, and hopefully yet to come greetings from an earlier border crosser sandy
  21. ...that the Volumes will go up to 11 ?
