  1. Hi Passive controls for multiple pickups will always have issues due to compromises made in trying to make a mixer without powered components. The compromise is between useful mixing action and losing signal level from the guitar The problem is caused by 'loading' of the signal by the pickup impedances and pot resistance sections interacting as the pot wiper position is moved from full vol position (The 'optimal' technical solution for mixing signals is to use an active circuit) Adding a very high impedance input buffer (eg simple FET buffer/amp) between guitar and pedals/amp may help somewhat If you want to keep your bass passive and you're ok with some DIY wiring you could re-configure the existing HB wiring (sounds nasty, but is only moving 2 wire connections and adding 2 resistors) as shown in my suggested mod below. This mod will need a higher gain setting, in general, on the amp but should then reduce the interaction between Vol controls when adjusting one/both during a session With the existing 250K ohm pots, you could try 100K ohm resistors (shown in blue on the circuit) - move each pickup signal wire (ie. not its ground wire) to the outer connection on its pot, and connect a resistor to the wiper. The other ends of the 2 resistors are connected together and then join at the Tone pot Using lower values for the resistors (eg 50K or 25K) can reduce the general loss of signal level but will start to give more loading/interaction between the 2 Vol controls again - it's worth trying this to check the result (Changing the Vol pots from 250K to 100K [Audio taper] and halving the resistor values could also help with reduction of general signal loss in the mod, but this would significantly increase the complexity of making the mod!) Hope this helps
  2. hey Bongo, sending good wishes for your session today - just play to the vibe - you love music, you'll be fine make some new friends, learn some new music, have fun!
  3. Apologies Paul, I was away for a while and somehow missed your post 😯 Many thanks for kind words! There are some amazing skills in evidence on the BC site, I hope I can learn a lot here Cheers Bassman!
  4. Great! Glad your Sinsonido is back to good health, preamp-wise If you've replaced the original bridge-mics with a piezo, I would have thought that you've bought the optimal choice - anyway, it's down to how it sounds and performs for you that matters. Good result! The problem on mine was due to the failed preamp circuit, so I left the bridge-mics in place and substituted my own circuit which has fixed the problem and provides smooth control of Vol & Tone Yes, the variety of different 'standards' for potentiometer shaft fixings is annoying I didn't like the plastic control knobs supplied with the Sinsonido, so I ordered some black anodized aluminium knobs which are still in keeping with the general design, but look and feel more classy. They have grub-screws with plenty of adjustment, so they've fitted fine with the thicker shanks on the new controls which I've used: I hope you're able to get some good sounds out with your piezo & its new preamp - happy gigging!
  5. No ...not ...Great Birnham Wood?!? [cue: Twilight Zone theme music] Lay on, Mcduff...
  6. hi Jon, greetings from an ex-Brighthelmstonian (and newbe basschatter) - lots of interesting (and fun) topics here
  7. ...apologies - had to be done! Eric & Ernie: Ice Cream Van...
  8. Ahhhh - that is more sad than a photo of a discarded, unloved pet, emaciated, and with torn, matted fur and (at least) one limb missing! Is there any part of that neck/headstock which has not been mangled? chipped head and heel; fretless board gouged by wirewounds; (bad) DIY replacement trussplate, so weak it buckled; mooring cleat from a large dinghy, welded at Kwikfit and bolted thro' head; fetching selection of mis-matched tuning heads; useful array of bolt holes from different (temporary) guitar hookups Looks a steal at £128.72 ...do you get a discount for quantity, I wonder?
  9. I've only worn the band merch T-shirt since the band is dead and buried ...well, since it's dead (i'm not sure all the bodies are buried yet)
  10. hi Jon i was halfway through building my own 'wishlist' preamp (shown below, along with the Palmer) and then I saw the Palmer with a few more features (eg, drive/blend, soft compression, pads, amp styles, battery/external), ready to go, and the Palmer won. So, I'm very happy with the features I can detect a slight background hiss when I'm not actually playing and certain functions are enabled, or some controls are increased: as you'ld expect, the background noise increases on fuzz & overdrive with more blend control, and with High EQ turned up This hasn't been a problem for me, so far, because I prefer to let the natural sounds of my fretless basses come through, and mainly use the EQ controls and amp selection I would have preferred the sockets to be located each side, rather than front & back, but right-angled jacks sort the front out ok (the back isn't a problem) The one control which seems rather er, subtle is Saturation - I've given it the benefit of the doubt above and called it 'soft compression'. Palmer describe it as the effect of beginning to overdrive a tape system ...er, ok All in all, I've been very pleased with it: it's well-made, robust, and very compact for both band/personal practice and gigging (I had to buy a mains adaptor separately - a few pounds on eB*y or Am*z*n) Hope this helps
  11. or deep fried mars bar ...think i'm going down with Calorie Aquisition Syndrome...
  12. ...never mind the ironmongery, there's a serious shortage of white puddins 'n butteries, down here, man!
  13. hah - no real buttons on a tablet screen! no real activity after pressing 'Submit Reply' on the screen, either! I see that one of my posts was timed after both Elvis and i had left the building! But got to admire the value for money (perhaps this is new feature to encourage subscriptions ...and why not?)
  14. ...some not so subliminal advertising from the people who make Mercs, then?
