1. My Jazz is active, still feeling my way around it but so far my favorite setting is 80% Neck 20% bridge Bass: 3/4 + center Treble: 1/4 to 1/3 + center Mid: 1/4 - center (the mid boost is killer approach with caution !! )
thanks for the update, i am tempted for punk/metal/reggae stuff, although a fiver seems the more sensible option. also equally tempted by the idea of a seperate 4-string set-up with ADGC (not tuned down) for use exclusively with an octave pedal (-1 oct, to clarify), just as a synth-type bass for d'n'b/dub requirements, mmmmm. so many possibilities, so little cash...
No worries, it worked a lot easier than i thought it would, although the low B is LOW !!! Took it up half a note to C an that seems sound pretty good ! Never tried or even thought of going higher so cant comment on how that might turn outIveve heard of people doing it to a fiver with EADGC, could be interesting.
Hey Danny us Ray users are always being told the G string can't be heard anyway on a serious note you are having a good preview slice of Ray 5 loveliness, All the fun of the four with a big juicy B string what's not to like?
There you go weak G problem no more with just putting it in the bin hehe If (big very yes if) i go down the five string rout (again an if) the Bongo 5HH i had on loan a while ago sealed it for me of what id go for IF i were to get a fiver.
  3. Wowzers that looks amazing ! Very nice work, congrats man !
  4.
I know it really. really isnt something thats going to appeal to many more people than me. but i wanted something that had my personality all over it.
As long as you having fun building it an gonna have fun playing it then go for it ! The only person it needs to appeal to is you

Got it set up now an to my surprise it went smoother than i expected it to go, my biggest concern was the nut but no filing needed there, just a slight truss intonation an truss rod adjustment, no unwanted rattles or buzzes an getting some great/different/interesting sounds from putting in slides going up to notes on the same string etc. Having fun with it at the minute, totally different playing style so its still a novelty, just bit limited with the lack of G. (everything is telling me, as much as don't want to admit it or like the idea of it...... gotta get a fiver )
  6. Just finished the book, thanks Geoff, good read ! Will be in the post tomorrow morning, on its way to YouMa All the best Dan.
  7. Going by the pictures of my two the string doesn't run totally 100% over the poles on the G String.......... so ? Ive personally never had a problem experiencing a week output on the treble side, once got it set up with your preferred gage of strings, set the pickups to factory speck to start with then adjust accordingly to your taste if you feel the need. As Pete says, lower the bass side to match the treble side if its an issue rather than raising the thin side. Having the pickups set to high is far worse than having them to low, Ive never or never likely to be not be able to get enough oomph out of a Stingray ! (good enough excuse for a couple of pics ! )
  8.
Pups at the same height?, Battery's both new? , String gauges the same?
Check all of the above, the fact that one is a 2x band an the other is a 3x should have no effect on output.
  9. Thats very nice Fran, good to see you building your collection back up ! I'm very much into Fenders an the min !
  10. At the end of the day a Fender factory is a Fender factory. Any Fender is hit an miss as far as quality control goes so who cares what part of the glob it was assembled on, as long as it plays an sounds to your liking! MIM made in Mexico by Mexicans, MIA made in America by Mexicans lol so whats the difference apart from the price tag ! (if thats how you wanna see it)
Used to have a precision tuned BEAD, just used a 5 string set minus the G. Simple enough to do, good results when it was set up properly. Didn't even need to adjust the truss rod, the overall tension was pretty much the same but needed intonation and saddle height adjusting. It will work fine, you don't need "an instrument built for the job" Plus, if you don't like it you can just change back to EADG, rather than being stuck with 5 strings
Yeah thats my theory, not a fan of fiver's so BEAD on a four is the logical thing to do. An if id don't work out, don't like it, cant get on with it, etc change it back
mmm.. food for thought.. the nut on the 'Jack' is pretty non-standard too, i shall get my local bass tech to advise me on the possibility. cheers.
I don't no enough (if anything) about the nut on a headless jack bass to comment. If I'm right its either double ball end strings that go on it or there clamped it an the the excess cut off etc, so as far as how that would complicate thing string spacing wise ??? don't know sorry . The bass I'm planning on doing this to is a Stingray so lots of room to work with Sorry not a lot of help.
please keep us posted with the results. i have an old Hohner Jack that i'm thinking to do the same thing with.
Will do. Just ordered some strings, the set up obviously isn't as simple as just putting heaver strings on it, bridge, truss rod will need adjusting an an most important will need to make sure that the strings are sitting in the nut properly. this is the slightly irreversible bit, the nut will need filing to take the drastically heaver strings, if you don't file it (most likely the B string) will eventually end up splitting the nut plus other issues, so its a decision thats worth putting some thought into before you start. (at worse if want to put it back to standard, will just need to replace the nut).
I know...I'm just being pedantic. You mean standard tuning not concert pitch.....Even in BEAD or drop D or whatever A is still 440 hz
See thats exactly what happened when a bass player tries using big words lol me bad when i was a little lad, my guitar tutor told me 'concert pitch' so it kind of stuck..... (still don't no what it means, don't no what 'pedantic' means lol) Thanks again guys !
Just out of interest (pedantic?),even though you're tuning down, you are still in concert pitch-A is still an A,it's just in a different place.
Sorry, Standard 440 EADG was what i ment

Apart from the obvious choice an just using a fiver, just want some advice from people who have/do use the tuning . Apart from the obvious set up (intonation, nut etc) got all that covered. I'm just in a situation ware I'm needing to tune down (i.e past concert pitch) so I'm thinking go the whole hog on second bass an BEAD it. Just never done it before (never needed to) so any tips, suggestions I'm all ears to. Either going to use a five string set or would an easier option be to try a set of DR Drop tune strings first see how i get on with them, do they even drop that low in standard gage ? All tips an suggestions please !
  18. Yeah Allparts / Mighty Might about the best if you want new but failing that, evilbay or keep your eye out on here in the for sale section, theres always some good stuff in there (when your not looking for it ) Good luck !
  19. Received the book this morning and looking forward to starting it ! Who ever next PM me there address an will get it moving along soon as I'm done with it Thank you Geoff for starting this off and thank you Keith For the forward.
  20.
looks like "the dog ate my bass"
Yup ! looks like somthing had a nibble out of it
  21. I'm my experience, acoustic basses are a bit gimmicky, even if theres just you up against a single acoustic guitar an vocals you will still need an amp. But with that said if you are doing an acoustic set then its not going to be full-on-flat-out volume so for ascetic value go for it ! Again from what Ive seen of acoustic basses if buying new set a bench mark of £200-250 max anything over that is unnecessary .
  22. Was about to say Stanley Clarke is well known for using a Bigsby trem but he is also known for using extremely light gage strings with it . Fret-less is the best solution of bass trem
  23.
oh yeah, what were those noodles made of? and did you really have to deep-fry them? My favourite was the risotto that looked like it had bits of dog food in it! Thats a sweet bass for £25 BTW!
Yeah you had to fry them , shallow fry did the job, seeing as it was meant as a quick snack for one, ended up using up every pan in the kitchen to make it Without hijacking the thread talking about food, no matter what the bass is made from £25 cant go wrong ! enjoy !! (could you buying this bass start Vesta curry/chow revival, Ive just eaten an getting the munch again now lol)
  24. Just thought id add a "after pic" not the best job in the world an wasn't meant to be for £3.49 for a bottle of black nail varnish ! But it does the job (kind of).... Moral of the story, don't let a few battle scars put you off picking up an awesome player just cause it looks a bit rough !
  25.
Bucklerash is careless and unnecessary.
+1 Buckle rash ? cant you go an see you Dr an get cream for that ? or is that "ring rash" I'm thinking of ?? lol either way neither are acceptable in my book . I brought my second Stingray with some kind of ???? rash ?? bearing in mind that the bass is a 2005 model an Ive had it 2yrs how this happened to it is anybody guess. Have since cleaned it up an filled in / touched up but still .... ouch how the hell did anybody let that happen to it is anybodies guess. Its a sweet player cosmetics aside, thats why i brought it
