Thanks for that. As far as i can work out the the one i was looking at is the 4 band eq and if I'm right should run in the same order as the stock 3 band that is already on my rays, for pots going Volume ----> Treble ----> Stacked pot, Mids ----> Bass .... Jack plug on the side of bass Well thats the order that there in now minus the stacked mid pot, just a standard single mid pot, all three have center dents but can live with out that. The information on there page (well the page i was looking at as in the link i posted) really isn't that clear, i hear what your saying that it will run just fine on 9V but if you give it a full 18V (2x 9V batters running in parallel) is that going to give you maximum potential out of it ? you no yourself when a new 9V battery drops down in charge a bit to 8.4V there is a huge difference in performance so the brief description in the advert specification is bit brief lol, bit of a difference between 9 an 18V Can see it being a hastle fitting it to run 18V (routing out the body to take bigger battery box etc) but wold the end result be worth it ? Another question, fitting, is it as simple swapping solder joints on the pickup an battery , appreciate that it comes ready assembled so I'm guessing that thats about it to fit it Thanks again.
Nice board, its really neat & tidy! How do you find the Echohead?
Thanks! The Echohead is great, 7 different features from long reversed delays to slapback / reverb type delays an with the addition of the tap tempo I'm more than happy with it
On that thread quoted I went on about it enough so I won't repeat myself I run mine on 9V. The difference with a 3EQ is that with the mids set flat, the bass/treble are very very close to the 2EQ sound but -in my opinion- a bit more "tight" on the lows, less boomy. Then the mids are very useful because with the sweep frequency control you can home in the exact frequcny you need to boost or cut... simply boost or cut to max, and scan for the sweet/offending frequency, and readjust level of cut/boost knob as desired. The bass/treble controls on a 3EQ are set differently from a 2EQ, as far as I can tell... so they sound different. No better, no worse, just different.
Hi Just read through the linked posted and just to clarify, you put the JE pre into your EB Stingray not the OLP (pretty sure thats correct) Out of the three pre-amps that are listed on the page on the link i put in the opening post which one did you chose and how did you decide ? I no that a two band and a three band Ray both sound totally different and with them stock you cant get one out of the other but with the pre amp that I'm looking at (the four band, volume - treble - stacked mids - bass) it can bee tweaked to sound like either and possibly something else. You say that you run yours on a single 9V how long do you get out of the battery compared to the stock pre amp ? and have you heard of anybody who runs them on 2 ? or is there no need, much work involved in fitting them ? Really don't no that much (if anything) about them so as much info as you guys got much appreciated

Thanks for the further GAS attack Fran lol Keep coming back an taking a look at it, then looking them up on other pages an gotta say that it has my attention, one question that i had that you have answered was about hand positioning being different with the frets being in different positions but from what you have said sounds like its not that much of a problem or should i say its not much of hassle re adjusting to it. Only other issue I'm thinking is with it being passive, haven't owned a passive bass in ??? long as everything i own is active but the simplicity of just having tone-volume-selector is again something else, cant wait to try one out for myself , who knows (I'm one end of the scale to the other here, just started a thread asking about John East pre-amps )

This is what i was looking at for a direct replacement for one of my three bands, a Four band with the mid high & low.
BTB MMSR 4 Band Preamp by John East 3 knob, Volume - Bass - Treble - Mid/MidSweep £157.50 Chrome, £172.50 with plate The BTB-MMSR 4 Knob, including Mid Sweep, has been designed with characteristics very similar to the original MM Stingray© 2 Band EQ, but is not a copy of the original circuit. The original used a single op-amp chip (single amplifier stage in the form of a chip) for both bass and treble circuits, whereas this unit utilises a more modern dual op-amp chip (two amplifiers stages in a chip). The bass and treble are stacked which allows inclusion of a mid sweep, along with original MM style bass and treble, on a 4 knob plate. When the mid boost/cut is centered, its effect is neutral and the EQ is purely late 70s MM style. This unit is supplied fully wired, including 3 single pots, 1 stacked pot, knobs, jack and battery clip, which may be spliced into an existing battery box, as would be available, in most cases. · Single Knob - VOLUME · Single Knob - Late 70s MM style TREBLE · Single Knob - Late 70s MM style BASS · Stack Knob - MID / MID FREQUENCY SWEEP (Mid Sweep 01) POWER REQUIREMENTS: 9-18V, 2.5mA
The power requirements 9-18V ? silly question (well not a silly question cause i don't no the answer to it) is it 9V or 18V ?. Would it run happily of one 9V battery but just for not as long as if it had the full 18V supply constantly to it, or would it need the full 18V (2x 9v battery fitted) to get the full potential out of it ?

A fretless conversion is really not that big of a job, just a few things that you will need to take into consideration before you rip the frets out. The fact that there will be fret markers on the now "finger board" that are going to look out of place, if you can live with that (i can an did/do), the lines that are left behind are a bonus if its your first dive into fretless. Remove the frets and then you will need to fill in the gaps ware the fret wire used to be, i used a two part epoxy resin on mine (something like aroldite is fine) mix the paste an push it into the gaps, (trying not to get it all over the board but not a problem if you do as it will need to be flatted anyway) an leave overnight to harden. then using a file GENTLY! remove the excess, remember that you are removing the excess glue and not the wood! lastly finishing off with sandpaper (start 80 - 180 - 240, 320 should finish the job sanding wise) finishing off with a medium wire wool then some lemon oil so when finished it should look something like this : Next job it to re cut the nut, the nut will need to be cut down deeper to allow for the high action that you now have, to start with, before you start filing the nut blind, refit the neck an string it up to see ware you are with it, it might not need much taking off it, just take it off a small amount at at a time, just cause theres now no frets doesn't mean that you can set the action as low as, it will still buzz! Good luck with project !

Just read a post and heard a bit about them, The John East Pre-amp for a Stingray, just googled it and came back with this : http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...eamps_MMSR.html Just having an ask at who has one What one did you decide on and why, (both my Rays are 3x bands so what would be best as replacement) And how much work is involved in fitting one Advantages to it over the stock EB pre-amp (as much info as you got basically ) Thanks in advance an look forward to hearing about them. Dan
Looks like a medium scale E string was packed with a long scale set to me. I've never had that problem with the La Bella sets I've used in the past or now.
My bets still on that.

Not long had a fling with Flatt's to quickly fall out with them and go back to rounds., but.... My question is that no matter if there strung through the body or the bridge as long as there all going through the same place then the silks should all start at the same place on each string ? Like in the photo the ADG are all the same length an then the E is a couple of INCHES!! shorter ???? Just seems a bit strange to me ?

Just keep your eye out on the used market, was not long ago myself offered an Stingray 4H £400, they do pop up now and again, for the condition that the bass was it it wasn't the deal of the century but was still a good price, at the end of the day wit a Stingray your getting a lot of bass for your cash for a tone that Ive never heard reproduced by a copy before (others might disagree but when i say copy i didn't say cheaper copy ) Hang in there an get the real thing
Westone Thunder I fretless: more dive than a Stuka and sounded abysmal.
Was just reading through this thread trying to think of the name of the first bass that i picked up, i was 13yrs old an at school an there was this bass guitar in the store room, the only bass guitar to be had by the music department, there wasn't even an amp at the time to plug into, i used to sit there fiddling with it on dinner breaks (yeah was a geek at school that favored the music room over sports, years later still no change I'm I'm happy with my decision lol) but anyways used to try to get some volume out of this thing by butting the body of it up to a table to hear the notes vibrate through the table an thinking WOW! I'm onto something here I did end up being able to take the bass home on weekends until it got broken by somebody at the school never to be seen agian..... The point to my post (apart from the memory lane bit) was the name of the bass (an how it looked are now very clear in my head lo) was a .... A Westone Thunder II. It was fretted (if you can call it that), weighed a tone (you try carrying it home, think Cartman from Southpark walking home with a double bass over his shoulder, maby the sports classes might of been useful to me back then ) But there you go, possibly the worst and first bass i ever had contact with, it was pretty unplayable set up wise an when i asked the music teacher on how to tune it was just told "use the piano to tune it, EADG, middle C is first key left of the lock, if you have been listing in class you shouldn't have a problem ???? (thinking back should of told her that the f*****g piano had a lock on the keys for a reason!!!!!! but hay" (good job my dad was my main source of inspiration to start playing lol, he had pitch pipes at home ) Aww fun stuff, not a thread hijack just thanks for the memory trip, could go on but wont so yeah worst ever bass .... A Westone Thunder II. Best bass ever.... A Westone Thunder II.

I know how you feel about the "stuck in a rut, not moving forward, un inspired plateau effect etc..." Been doing that a lot myself recently for some reason, tried all sorts , different gage strings, flat-wounds, rounds, steels, messing about with different effects, anything just to try and find some inspiration to do something different, but that only works for so long and then you are back to ware you started. Ive found (well it works for me, kind of) rather than going off in a different direction with another instrument (not that there is anything wrong with that), sit down an learn a piece of music that you normally wouldn't listen to, something that you don't even particularly like an hopefully will teach you something that you can apply to the stuff that you normally do, just add a twist of something different into it ! Thats was pointed out to me in the past an worked for me so when ever I'm in uninspired mode thats what i go for Just my opinion and hope it helps some.

Thanks all for replies, makes sense now. (kind of) so with the tap tempo foot switch, would that mean i could change the delay rate/time as an when needed ? , like by remote kind of thing ?
