I recently decided to replace the pickups on my 1999 MIM Fender Jazz - the model with both pickups the same size (neck PU sized). I knew this would mean enlarging the bridge pickup slot slightly to fit the new one, but now it comes to the crunch I'm a bit apprehensive. I've had this bass since new and I'm not too precious about it, but wanted to see if anyone else has done this job so I don't fall into any traps I haven't foreseen! I've replaced the neck PU and tone cap already and it sounds incredible with the Fender CS60 compared to the stock one, so I'm keen to install the bridge PU. My current plan is to use small files to enlarge the hole, but I'm wondering if pre-scoring the finish would prevent unwanted damage/chipping. Also not sure how to make the modification look even and clean around the curves where the PU retaining screws are. Advice/warnings/ideas for other approaches from the BC clusterbrain are most welcome!

That's really handy info, thanks for sharing! I've been thinking about popping a fresh valve in my ABM Evo ii too. You've just saved me a lot of research! Watford valves also do a high gain version of the JJ ECC83S. I wonder if that would be safe to use and produce a different type of grind/drive in this setting.

Oh, I forgot about that one. It's a fuzz - my take on the bazz fuss circuit. I can't remember exactly what the component values I settled on were, but contrary to its appearance, it doesn't do "subtle"!

I'm a real sucker for peer pressure @lidl e! Current config is below. Highlights include a scrap plywood board from the shed, and an OC2 I got given 25 years ago by a mate who didn't know what to make of it. All sized to fit in an old flight case I had lying around. One day I'll route out a bit of the underside to fit the power supply underneath...

Just when I thought my board was becoming worthy of posting on this thread @admiralchew blows it out of the water! Impressive boards and cool to see them all together. I'd not thought about pedalboards as a hobby in their own right but it makes sense when you see stuff like this. Think I might wait a while before I put my meagre efforts out there.

I recently picked one of these up too and agree it brings something a bit different to my tone which I really quite like. Also prevents me walloping the front end of my amp when engaging an octaver! Haven't made the time to try it on my fretless yet but it's encouraging to hear the positive comments here. Think I'll need to spend some quality time with the Opto Comp over the weekend.

I didn't knos any of those folk had PhDs! Interesting. Off the top of my head, Caribou (Dan Snaith) has a PhD in mathematics, and Floating Points (Sam Shepherd) has a PhD in neuroscience. My PhD was in Environmental Chemistry... but I wouldn't call myself much of a musician!

I'm always intrigued when I see a LS-2 as there are so many possibilities. How have you got it set for this board?

The TC Sub n Up Mini might be worth a try as it is pretty affordable if you can find a 2nd hand one. However, keep in mind you might need to use the Toneprint app to get desirable sounds. It seems a lot of the presets have a fair chunk of -2 Octave as standard (not controllable with the knobs) which needs managing. The full sized version is probably easier to dial in if you have space for it.

Does seem a rather difficult way to take photos of an inanimate object.

Thanks for posting this! I've just picked up a Sub'N'Up mini and was keen to try to emulate an 8 string bass sound. I wouldn't have known where to start without your efforts. I added a little more gain to the octave up, and set some subtle modulation (chorus) to come in at the upper range of the dry knob. I found that in the Android app, some parameters were snapping to values outside of what you describe, but overall I'm pleased with the outcome. As you mention, not adding too much of the upper octave gives best results and doesn't make the sound too "chimey". I'm much more inclined to get tweaking other patches now, so thanks again for the crash course! I can see some late nights ahead.

Hi Everyone, Plymouth-based mediocre bassist getting back into it! I've played music off and on since starting with cello aged 8-ish and meandering through all sorts (French horn anyone?). In my teenage years I picked up the bass for a band, and... shazam! I haven't gigged for a while but my most recent project was a gypsy jazz duo (played guitar too for that one). I like to play anything with a good groove, but also enjoy seeing what otherworldly sounds I can generate with a bit of experimentation. Have just set up some jam sessions with old friends and enjoyed last night's eclectic journey of Irish Trad to metal via glam. I currently play a MiM fretless Jazz bass bought new about 20 years ago, and the P-bass my wife bought me the day I completed my PhD in 2013. I like to make things, and have built some of my own effects. Currently finishing a MIDI controller built from a navy ship's switch panel and an Arduino, which I use to operate a mini synth. Inspired by the gear page here, I finally dug out the router to build a dedicated pedalboard from some plywood offcuts, and look forward to sharing the outcome. Great to see such a community here on Basschat and it's certainly contributing to my enthusiasm to keep playing. Cheers, Luke
