I have to say I did prefer the way it was beforehand. But that could just be me
beforehand? is it just me where there are 0 topics, 0 posts in the forum?
Hey Dude Thanks for the comments. Will copy them pics over in a bit. I have gigged it once and then put it on the stand at home. It really isnt a live bass for me. As an owner of 3 Fenders that i use live, the active thing just confuses me. Dont suppose you have an old Squier lying about you wanna swap for it? lol
only squier in my house is the jagmaster, and youre not having that back i'm afriad! -
OLP MM22 - Twin Humbucker Model- Graphite Pearl - 4 String

this was originally mine! lovely bass, highly recommended! My original sale thread heres the original sale thread, i figured some pictures of the actual bass might help the deal. also, chris is a great guy to deal with, when we did the trade it went really smoothly and was done quickly. -
damn, looks like me and simon1964 wont be able to make it. we were supposed to be giving budgetbassist a lift, too, so provided he still wants to go i guess he'll be looking for a lift!
I hope it doesn't scare them away "'ere. that ain't a Fender"
haha i can shamelessly say i went to an audition for a band the other day with my dad's precision even though i hardly ever play it, just cos a fender might impress them!
It's like any innovator - there's always players that take it further. Take Larry Graham, for instance. When I first heard Jaco's solo album back when it was released, it was mind-blowing. Ok, there are better, faster players etc, but Jaco had something special, and his technique was awesome. he was just a genius musician. I've read lots of comments by (mainly) younger players who can't see what the fuss is about. You just have to look a bit deeper than the bass heroes of today. Jaco is, and will always be, the greatest bass player of all time.
ahh no! i'm obviously not explaining myself very well! i completely understand what the fuss is about with all these musos, i understand that theyre awesome musicians, and when i hear jaco i find his playing mind blowing! he was a fantastic bass player! when i hear him play i just think "woah, i wish i could do that!". BUT i'd still rather listen to new found glory or something, because thats just the sort of music i'm into, and i just find any player just soloing gets boring very, very fast! either that, or perhaps i'm not understanding what you're saying?

keep the five, you'll get used to it! EDIT to expand, otherwise i sound like a hypocrite as i coudnt get along with 5 strings so sold mine! what i mean is, you aren't used to four stringers and dont own any four stringers, and you're starting from scratch. you might as well use what you've got, and you'll get used to it, and learning on a five string will probably make you a more versatile player in the long run (queue arguments for/against 5 strings ). if you sell up now to buy a four string, you probably will lose money (i always do when i sell a bass to buy a new one), and then you'll play a four string for a few years, and you'll end up wanting to try out a five string eventually (most players do) and then 5 stringers will seem bizarre to you. its also a matter of what you play, if you're in a punk band then a four string is all you need. if you're in a death metal band, the lower frequencies will be useful. or if you're in a jazz band, the extra range of notes will also come in handy. remember what drew you to a 5 string in the first place, and ask yourself if you're willing to lose that for the sake of making starting out a little easier to yourself (because it WILL be easier learning on a 4 string, unless you're already used to the 5 string). its just a matter of if you put in the extra work, you'll have the advantages of a 5 string, if you don't have the time/can't be bothered etc. to put in the extra work of learning on a 5 string, then you wont have those advantages. to be honest it shouldn't be much more work anyway, it just might be a little confusing to begin with! personally i dont think its worth you probably losing out on some cash, maybe even confusing yourself a little with the change, and losing the advantages of a 5 string. however, its up to you what you do eventually!
If you find him boring, thats cool, its all just opinions. But Jaco did plenty of beautiful and very lyrical lines, almost vocal like. There really was more to him than just 'twiddling around' He was unique at that time, for sure. Garry
oh yeah definatly! i understand why people would listen to his music, but its just really not my sort of thing at all! i dont like victor wooten or anything like that, this solo bass stuff just bores me! and my point was that maybe the reason i dont sound like jaco when i'm playing fretless is maybe because i dont listen to him and i dont do all that solo stuff.

Beginner looking to buy first bass, appreciate views on a few models
Tait replied to Silverwolf's topic in Bass Guitars
have you tried searching the forum? there are a lot of threads from beginners comparing the yamaha and the ibanez! personally i'd go for the ibanez, they're solid basses and are well built. they sound excellent, too! theyre light and have really fast necks, and you can get a huge range of sounds from them. although to be honest, you want to get out there and go to every music shop you can get to, play everything within your price range - and definatly set a price range, otherwise you'll end up spending waaay more than you planned. maybe take a friend who knows about basses if you have one? stick to something with a brand on the headstock, and if theres anything at all youre not sure about ask here! then buy your favourite bass of the lot. if you're lucky, you'll know as soon as you pick up the bass which one is the right on for you, and that bass will be a keeper. -
Congrats. What's the crack then? Nice bunch of guys?
yeah, they seem like cool guys! theyre a little older than me, they look about 18-19ish, whereas im 17 in 2 weeks. but they were nice enough guys.
Well done that man!! Did you get any further information about any record deal / their immediate ambitions, etc - i.e. are you gonna be posting about sold out US tours in the near future?
they record at some studio fairly often by the sounds of it, but the drummers dad is the owner of a venue i've played a few times, and he's now setting up a studio and hiring a sound engineer and stuff, so it looks like we might be recording there in the future when its all up and running. the manager mentioned something about going on tour, but i said i was at college, and the singer/guitarist said that he's just got an apprenticeship as a chef for a local football club so can't miss that, so nothing big like that is happening in the near future! however, the manager has got a band touring europe next week, so he seems to know what he's doing, so maybe we will go on tour over some holidays or something!
Congrats Dude! Hope all goes well for you
thanks a lot
As Jeff Berlin says, he doesn't play fretless because he and virtually everyone else sounds like Jaco.
jeff berlin is so full of nonsense. when i play fretless i dont sound like jaco, but thats because i dont play fusion jazzy stuff on fretless (and i'm not good enough to sound like jaco ) and because the only time i ever play fretless is when i'm doing acousticy stuff. i've hardly listened to any jaco at all, i get bored after a few minutes because its all just him twiddling around and i find that boring.

AAAAHHHH! they just text me asking about a jam TODAY! i dunno if i can make it yet though, i'll ring them in a bit when i know... i was thinking they were gonna give me some songs to learn or something... i might try and have a listen through their songs and try to work out the basslines the other bassplayer wrote now, although i realise they probably wont be expecing me to do that.

i'm fairly certain blink 182's live album must have had all of tom delonge's vocals overdubbed, pretty much everything i've heard them play live tom has sounded absolutely terrible on, except that one album! as for the recording quality being poor, why is that? i guess that theres going to be a lot of reverb, but surely thats the main thing. i mean, if theyre recording each part from a different line you can sort of the mix later, and add effects/tone later, cant you? oh, and i think its a massive let down when they record over mistakes, too. thats one of my favourite things about seeing a band live, all the little mistakes and little changes in the song because you cant you about 8 guitar tracks or whatever that let you know that youre not just hearing a studio album. it takes that away when you dub over the live recordings.
Wouldn't happen to be the "Town Mill" in Mansfield would it?? :brow: My advise would be to make sure you are all on the same wavelength musically, and directionally. But above all, make sure that they all have personalities that appeal to you, so you all get along straight away. Nobody wants to spend a long time with a bunch of people they don't like Learn the songs of their myspace, and give the audition your best shot. It will be good experience for you. Good Luck Dude
it would be the town mill, do you play there often? whats your band called? my current band is blaq rain, we've played there a few times, its a good but quite small venue!
Can you get on with playing the music? (I find I'm much more tolerant of music if I'm playing it rather than just listening to it). If so do the audition. It'll be good practice/experience at the very least. Remember that you're auditioning them as much as they are you. Only thing to consider is that if even half of what they claim is true they have big ambitions. Would you be prepared/able to put your education plans on hold to make this band work?
i've listened to the music, the basslines shouldn't be too difficult and its good music. and thats what i thought, so what if i don't get in? i wont be in any different a situation to the one i'm in now, so i might as well go for it anyway! as for the education thing - it just depends on how big their ambitions and current level is at. i'm going to ask all this stuff at the audition (or do you think its worth me phoning the manager or something and askinig him before the audition? or asking him when he gets in contact about the audition?) but to be honest, they'd have to be doing pretty well for me to put my education on hold, theres not a massive chance of it happening at all and i'll let them know that, might as well be as honest as i can. still - its an experience!

I just got a call from the manager of a local band who's bass player has left he's going to set me up with an audition. this is the first time anything like this has happened, usually its me who forms the band or its just a mate asking me to join his mess around band. i've not played with the band before, i know nothing about them except the 4 tracks on their myspace, but i was recommended by a drummer whos friends with the manager. according to their myspace they came 7th in the BBCs search for the UKs best unsigned band, and apparently have recieved an award from a venue i've played at a few times claiming they are "the best band ever to have played in mansfield". it also says they have a major label, i dunno if they just put that for a laugh or if they actually do, but i guess i'll find all that out at the audition. haha, typing this has made me nervous!
