one day i WILL own a blue flower tele bass.
  2.
blimey, 16 and already tied down!
i think the joke was that its going to take him so long to finish it that we'll be married by then and then our wives wont let us buy it
  3. do you mind posting pictures on this thread? i'm not interested in buying so its cool if you don't want to, i've just not seen the original steve harris precision before and when i google image search it i can only find the new one.
  4. i've just skimmed through this so i don't know if any of these basses have been mentioned already. i don't own anything popular, i have an ibanez SR500 and then my taitycaster. but my dad has a MIJ precision with EMGs, a warwick thumb, a fretless jazz, a rickenbacker, and a stingray. i can get recordings of all those clean if you want me to.
  5.
I major II minor III minor IV major V major VI minor (we will ignore 7 atm)
VII is a diminished right? one of the songs our band play we do with power chords and we use the VII, but now i'm doing an acoustic version and that chord has given me a lot of trouble. but i think i have it. if the root chord is D maj (as it is in this song) then the VII is Db, A, Gb right? thats what i'm using and it sounds right to me anyway.
  6. i like the rings around the screw holes
  7.
that really reminds me of luke's taitycaster looking good!
funny you should say that cos i really really really want this bass already!
  8. depends if its a song i like. if i wouldnt have listened to it before, i probably wont listen to it after. if i did listen to it before, then learning it with my band wont change anything.
  9. i had a dream about these the other night, and i've only just remembered now i saw that. except my dream involved the more expensive version in red.
  10. on that picture of the 3 together i think its quite interesting to see the difference in the sunbursts, the precision on the right hardly has any red (is it two tone or three?) and the jazz has lots of red. is that to do with different years or are/were fender just incosistent with their sunbursts?

    mim jazz #2

special edition i think. i think beedster used to have a white one, someone on here did. its just a jazz with a 1 piece pickguard (now they only come on the mark hoppus as far as i know) and strat knobs. simple!
  13.
Right, understand now. It's good to challenge expectations. I'll go back and have another earwig.
it isn't the tightest of our recordings tbh, that probably doesn't help.
  14.
I wouldn't go so far as to say it's ugly - unremarkable perhaps...
+1 its like a sunburst fender P, not attractive, not unattractive, just there. theres nothing special looking about it, but its not ugly.

    Thanks

    i agree, thanks everyone!
  16.
I leave all my basses bar one, in a safe and secure lock up. At the time, I had swapped the pups and scratch plate and they remained with me in my house where as the basses were in the lock up. When my house got broken into, they nicked my stereo, CDs, spare bass at the time (a Washburn 6 string) plus my box of spares which included the pups and scratch plate. I hope that helps Tait. Not a happy story but so glad I decided to keep the basses else where. I am now in a very secure neighbourhood but my gear is still locked away where I know it is safe.
haha fair enough, i figured they weren't attached to the bass at the time, but i didn't quite understand why someone would see a bass sat there and only steal the spares sat at the side
  17. just out of curiosity, how did someone steal the pickups and scratchplate but not the bass?
  18. well you can do very basic recordings with the guitar/bass/drums, amps, mics (including drum mics, unless you have an electric kit) and a DAW. i'd recommend REAPER if you're planning on using your PC. of course, you can get a DAW like the BOSS BR-1600, which i own but use more as an effects pedal than a DAW, i like to be able to see the tracks in front of you, drag them and copy them easily, theres a lot you can do much easier with something like REAPER. thats all very basic recordings, but if you go on my band's website thats all we used (and i'm only a beginner, there will be many people on here that could use the same and get a much better sounding final song), along with the help of people on basschat on this thread and this thread. have a read through them (although the second thread is specifically about overdriven guitar, it has some tips in that will help with general recording too) and have a look at this thread too if you havent already, and just have a look through the recording section to see if there are any other useful looking threads. sound on sound is a good magazine to have a look at too if you want recording advice. but i'm a beginner too so i'm sure someone who knows what they're talking about will be along soon!

    OLP MM3

a MM pickup will be quite middly, if it bothers you that much try the seymour duncan AlNiCo MM pickup (provided its a 4 string, the 5 string one isn't the right shape for an OLP), its supposed to be less middly sounding, and jon shuker told me that its his personal favourite MM style pickup, that must count for something? i went for the seymour duncan ceramic because thats more middly, and i love it!
  20.
That's it! - er - Just an opinion, no offence intended
none taken! but that was kind of the aim, we wanted the verse and chorus to be very different, so we've got one where you've got chords strummed and just held for the bar, and in half time, then we've got one where you've got it tight and short, playing and stopping.

    Ibanez SR500
Ibanez SR500 = godly bass, good sound, good feel, its light and well, I like it.
couldn't have put it better myself! and i've talked about how much i love my ibanez so many times i sometimes get bored of it!
  22.
Yeah, on reflection, that was a bit vague. I s'pose I mean something like - the individual parts of the song seem to be more than the sum of the whole. Each section sounds good in itself, but afterwards, it was difficult to remember what the song sounded like in it's entirety. With the other two, there seemed to be more unity. Apologies, this all sounds very nitpicky, but I'm critting this like I would a label release. As you say, it's a taste thing.
right, i think i understand. do you mean it doesn't really sound like one song, but more like different bits put together?
Something else that will often help to big up parts is to record one gtr part with the chords played in one position, and another with the chords played elsewhere on the neck, in order to get different voicings. Truth be told, I've tried using a capo and it works. The shame!
i'll give that a go then, thanks!
  23.
First off, wanna say that, for early efforts, these are good quality, well produced demo songs and better than most of the crap that's out there on myspace. Even if the prod'ns a bit rough compared to a pro studio / producer, it's the songs that are important, and they stand out well. Musicianship's strong as well. Some really nice bass in there.
thanks, as a band we've been together a few years now, but we were only young when we first got together and so haven't written songs until recently. if you look at the videos on there theres one where we're really young looking and sounding they really need getting rid of, they're AC/DC covers and were recorded on a video camera.
Downfall: Good song, strong hooks. Sounds like it was recorded in a small studio sometime in 1978 (this is a good thing). I actually like the guitar sound a lot. Some room noise on the vocals, but actually not a bad thing, fits with the feel.
a few people have said the same thing, it sounds like its a really old recording, but in a good way. i don't like it, but if other people are liking it i might as well keep it.
Anymore: Suddenly, it sounds like a different band 25 years later. Feels like the band is much 'closer' to the ear - a more claustrophobic, modern sound. Not that keen on the little drum fills over silence. Vocals sound good - you should do more - reminds me slightly of Dee-Dee Ramone. In fact, much better than the vox on EOTW. More conviction. Synth sound doesn't really work for me - bit too polite. It's well-played, but maybe experiment with something that sounds like it's coming from the depths of hell - maybe double it an octave lower and distorted as f***. Guitar sound seems a bit more 'generic' than in Downfall - a lot of bands sound like this - which you could either see as a positive (it fits with what other people are doing) or a negative (it fits with what other people are doing). Depends what you're going for, really, I s'pose as it suits the song, but, sound-wise just seems a little one-dimensional. Maybe better off experimenting with layering several tracks of guitar, each one being a bit less distorted than what's on here, then panning them wide to give some space.
its a very different song to downfall, with a very different sound. i think it sounds like a completely different band, too (the different singer doesn't help), but i like that, i hate it when you hear a band where all the songs sound the same. besides, we're not taking it too seriously, its a hobby, might as well mess with lots of different types of music. we all have very different musical influences, too. thanks for your comment about the vocals, i don't see myself as a very good singer so i wasn't confident about singing it. and they want me to sing on an acoustic version of a song i wrote, which i'm not sure about. the dee-dee ramone voice isn't on purpose, but i'm a huge fan of the ramones so my voice was probably influenced by them. as for the synth - i'm really not sure about it. i don't think it fits at all, i only put it in there as a joke because i thought our lead guitarist/singer (who's heavily influenced by metal and classic rock) would hate it. i planned on him recording a guitar solo, but he said he likes the synth solo. i'm currently writing a song where a synth solo would fit much better though, so i'm hoping he'll say that we can have a guitar solo on any more and put the synth solo there. the drummers on his side as well, so at the moment i'm fighting a losing battle, so i'll bear in mind what you say about a dirtier synth sound. with the guitar sound the way i did it was for each guitar part i recorded two tracks, one clean and one overdriven. then i copied the clean track and used a couple of VSTs that were recommended by basschatters to get a nice crunchy overdriven sound without too much gain, then mixed the 3 different tracks into one guitar part. i've experimented with different ways of recording distorted guitar, and i found that way i got the nicest sound.
End Of The World: Not the strongest of the three songs - doesn't really take you guys anywhere. It's a sequence of good riffs, but they need tieing into a more developed framework. The staccato verse parts could be even choppier and tighter to the beat, in order to contrast with the section where you open up. Guitar solo sounds a bit 'uncertain' - both execution and sound - sorry. Nice slippery bass solo, but might be even more relevant over a more relaxed beat in a different song (!) Also, loads of songs have the words "End of the World" in the title. Maybe change it to something else. Overall, that's some really good work there, Tait. Sounds like a proper band working up some good stuff.
its funny you should say that, i've had people (non musicians, admittedly) tell me end of the world is their favourite! i just guess its different tastes. sorry, i don't understand what you mean by a more developed framework. i completely agree with the verses, they coud be much tighter. i think we were having a bad day when we recorded that one. i also think the choruses need to be heavier guitars, they just don't sound dirty enough for my liking. i don't know what its missing, but to me the choruses sound like they're missing something. my guitarist said the same about the guitar solo, we plan on recording it again with one long guitar solo rather than a short one from our rythm guitarist, a bass solo then a solo from the lead guitarist. we think it'll sound better that way. and just don't get me started on the title or lyrics to end of the world. i hate them, sooo much its unbelieveable. but i've been outvoted when i suggested rewriting the lyrics, its the first song we ever wrote as a band and it wouldnt be right to change it apparently. thanks for the comments anyway, its really appreciated you taking the time to have a listen and letting me know what you think!
  24. how does this work then? i guess you would use this as a MIDI controller, like you would use say a MIDI keyboard? i've only recently started messing with MIDI so don't really understand it well, but i'm guessing this converts the notes you play into a MIDI signal somehow (i realise you explained this earlier, but i didn't have a clue what you were saying so we'll say it converts it somehow) then you put the MIDI signal into a synth or whatever? can you use it as a normal jazz as well then? are the pickups normal pickups, and its a piezo bridge or something, or is it how you do the electronics, or are the pickups special MIDI pickups?
  25.
You do realise, that if you defret it, that in itself will change the tone? G.
+1, thats what i was thinking when agoulding said he loved the tone. why do you want it to be fretless? if its just for the novelty of owning a fretless that wears off fast, you find you end up using it less and less and going more to the fretted bass. the only time i ever use a fretless is when i'm specifically after a fretless tone and a fretted bass can't do it, but if you like the tone so much, why bother? using a fretless when you could use fretted seems illogical to me because you risk sounding out of tune if you don't hit it just right.
