It's precisely because in your head you have set a £2000 limit to what you would spend on a bass that you question why anyone would want anything above it. If say you won the lottery and had £10 million I am sure you would buy a £5000 if it was 1% better than the £2000 one and you liked it more. My car is worth about £1500-2000. My main bass is worth £3500. I prefer to do this than have a £10000 car because I get more enjoyment from the bass than I would from a car which to me is just a mechanism to get from A to B. Steve
i don't have a £2000 limit, it was just a number i estmated on the spot. tbh i probably wouldn't spend £1800 on a bass, maybe £1600 after playing it. i suppose it really depends on how much you think its worth. personally, i don't think any bass is worth as much as a lot of basses go for. no matter how nice a bass was, if someone told me it cost £3000, i'd tell them theres not a chance in hell im paying that much for it. damn right if i had £10 million i wouldnt think twice about spending £5000 on a bass, or buying a ferrari, or even a helicopter and a field near my house to put a helipad in, but the fact is, i just opened my bank statement to find i have £20.12. i'd still think £5000 for a bass is obscene, but then i'd think aww well, i got £10 million, and its a really nice bass, what the hell. i don't understand what you're trying to say about the car, sorry.
I keep saying it: there's a million other factors to choosing and instrument apart from the sound of it.
ahh, it seems i didn't understand your point at all then! true, the playability is another factor, but tbh i pity you if you can't get along with anything thats out there. and ok, maybe you can get along with whats out there, but these expensive boutique basses are nicer in your eyes, but it leads back to the original question, is it worth it? i wouldn't have thought so. if you like a stingray neck for example, im sure jon shuker or RIM basses (as the two cheaper examples of boutique basses given earlier) would make a bass with a stingray neck, with a much better build quality than a stingray, and it can make any sound you like, if you want it to sound like a jazz, i'm fairly sure jons good at making basses sound like jazzes, or precisions, or have whatever tone you want them to have. most of the cheaper boutique bass builders are good at making necks how you ask them to, so yes, maybe a £3000 bass might end up with a nicer neck than a £1500 one, but if the £1500 bass is playable and has a nice neck anyway, is it really worth it for that neck thats a little nicer? i suppose i'm arguing pretty much the same as i argued for sound, that if a £1500 bass is nice, but a £3000 bass is nicer, whether that be for sound, playability, build quality, looks, anything really, i personally wouldn't be able to justify all the extra money that some people play for a "nicer" bass when you could pay much less for a "nice" bass. i don't think i'm making my point very well, i have a tendacy to ramble a lot, but i hope im making my point. really it doesnt matter what i think, what you think, what anyone thinks except the person buying the bass. if they think the extra money is worth the extra quality, then thats fine by me. i don't think i could ever spend much more than £2000 on a boutique bass though, when i can get a perfectly nice shuker for less.
On the BGM thread Tait said "i should've clarified. what I meant was that you could get a £1500 Shuker and make it sound fantastic, and yeah, the £3000 fodera may sound "better", but who will notice the difference, really? " The answer is I would, if I was playing it. That extra is all for the player, not the listener.
i guess, but is it really worth it? don't we make music so that others can listen to it? whats the point in spending an extra £1500 when none of the listeners will notice the difference, really? i dont know, i understand your point, and its natural for a player to want to sound their best, even if no one else is going to notice, but i just don't see that its worth the silly prices some pay for a boutique bass, to sound that little bit better when no one other than the person playing it is going to tell the difference. especially as i see the point of making music to be solely to please the listeners, i see music as entertainment. but i know others see music as much more than that, and i guess it may be more important to them, but even then i think its difficult to imagine that i could ever spend that much on a bass.

i think status used to do one, but if they did its gone now. i can picture it, and cant see why they would get rid of it, but im fairly certain it was status.
-
depends on how much really. i'd happily spend up to maybe £2000 on a boutique bass (if i had the cash ), but i wouldn't pay some of the silly prices you hear about, because i honestly don't think any bass could be worth that much.

none are as nice as a good ASAT, or a natural L2000. i understand them bringing out a jazz copy, they sell great and the jazz was leo fender's invention, but i don't like it, its too predictable and boring, everyone does them. i've always had G&L GAS though, there are 3 basses that i think i'll always GAS for. A burns bison in black, a fender mark hoppus in white, and a G&L L2000 in natural. my favourite of the lot is the reliced L2000, but i'd prefer a none reliced one.
That's the key thing... sorry, that was a really long post so i figured i'd save space by just quoting the first sentence, so you know which post i'm replying to
i agree with everything you said there. my post didn't really say what i meant, i should've clarified. what i meant was that you could get a £1500 shuker and make it sound fantastic, and yeah, the £3000 fodera may sound "better", but who will notice the difference, really? either bass you play, people will think "what a great tone!", but to most listeners theres no difference, and that includes bass players, not just the general public. if you're playing a £1500 bass, and you know what you're doing with it, chances are, no ones going to think that you don't quite sound right, and you should really be playing a £3000 bass, because that would work better for what you're playing, especially since when you get your custom shuker built, you'll have the sort of music youll be playing in mind. the more likely situation would be that with either a £1500 bass or a £3000 bass, nearly every listener would think what a great tone you've got out of the bass. therefore there isn't really a difference, or at least not one worth the extra money. but anyway, its an old debate, no ones right, and this is a completely different topic to what the thread is about. so if you want to reply to me, theres another thread on boutique basses here, i'll be checking in there, reply there. or PM me, but the boutique basses thread seems more logical, cos other people can join the discussion.

My custom P bass - Shuker bass building course 20/07/09
Tait replied to Mikey R's topic in Build Diaries
you say about string thru, but remember you also have to drill for that. it might be a bit of a rush fitting it in. you have to bear that in mind. i voted badass simply because i always use badass, IMO they're the best bridge for the price out. -
I don't see why people get that bent out of shape about the cost of instruments that are being reviewed. are you really trying to rush out after every issue is published and buy the latest thing that was just reviewed at under £500? of course not. You're going to play pretty much the same bass you always have and possibly buy one once every 5-10 years if something comes along that really jumps out at you. This is of course quite a generalization, but I'm guessing it's true for a large percentage of the readership of BGM, or any other magazine for that matter.
no, we don't read about something that looks good and think "i must buy it". but whenever i'm looking at buying a new bass, i will look through the reviews for things in my price range, see if anything jumps out at me, see what BGM think. ok, they might not be overly reliable, but they will give an idea on what i might like and might not. or if theres a bass i'm GASing for, i'll have a look through to see if BGM have reviewed it at all, see what they think. or even if i'm just reading reviews, i see a bass thats sub £500 and its got excellent reviews, then i can bear that bass in mind in the future when i will be looking to buy a bass. but if they're only reviewing £3000 instruments, this doesn't apply.

ive heard of this teen town so many times, and yet ive never heard the song. i'll give it a listen tommorow morning, then i'll do my best to learn it, and probably give up after several hours trying it sounds like you did great in your exam faithless, hope you get the results you need.

what BGM really need to do is ask on here or on finnbass or on any other big british forum what we want in a magazine. they're getting there, but big forums are the perfect oppurtunity to talk to their TMG, and yet they don't seem to use it. i realise there are a few people who write for BGM on here, and they will probably put these suggestions forward, but if they asked their TMG what they wanted to read about, i'm sure very few people would say "we want to read reviews of 3 basses that we can't afford" rather than "we want a good balance between botique basses and affordable basses". i know if i was to publish a magazine and i had this good an oppurtunity to see what my readers want, i'd take it up. its also a good chance to see what they're doing right, because they'd now see how much the majority enjoyed the interviews (i found them quite boring personally, but then, i always do), and they know they're doing that right.
That's a strange one. I've heard of scams where people have been phished by accusing a seller of duplicating another auction and posted a link as proof. Of course the link takes you too a fake Ebay log in page and they get your (and anyone else who was interested in the auction) password that way. If your email included your name it's also possible they could have sent you a convincing looking email from 'Ebay' and phished you that way. How were you certain that it was the same guy responsible for hacking your account?
obviously i dont agree with scams, but you gotta give it to them, this is quite clever.

my favoutires the aerodyne. you can't beat those metallic grey aerodynes for looks (except maybe a white aerodyne). obviously the white and black precision is just a classic, and that squier jazz is really nice, too.

My custom J bass - Shuker bass building course July 2009
Tait replied to ateyercheese's topic in Build Diaries
i played my shuker course bass at a gig the day after i finished, or maybe two days. the lacquer won't have fully hardened so just make sure not to bang it against anything! it should be ok though, mine was. -
i've come to the conclusion that the pickups on my "taitycaster" are out of phase with each other, because with only one pickup at a time, they sound great, but with both pickups, it sounds thin and quiet. problem is, i don't know if its supposed to sound like that, as i've neve heard any other P/MM basses, so is there any way to tell from the wiring if they're right? i know very little about electronics tbh, so you're going to have to explain it simply to me the pickups are seymour duncan quarter pounder precision pickup at the neck, and seymour duncan cermain MM pickup at the bridge, with a seymour duncan 2 band EQ, modded to have a 3 way switch rather than a blend pot. the wiring of the pickups was done by me with jon shuker telling me what to do, and the modding of the active circuit was done by jon himself, so i can't really imagine there being a problem. but i've heard people describe out of phase pickups, and thats pretty much what my taitycaster is like - good sounds on either pickup, but together they are thin, quiet and trebly sounding. so really, what i'm asking is - how can you tell other than by sound if pickups are out of phase? how easy is it to change the wiring so theyre in phase? and can someone please explain to me how to wire them so theyre in phase? or will it be worth just taking it to a shop to get it done?

i'd go second hand, an extra £100 is always useful.
And yes, i do have nickelback and blink 182 cds. But they were only a quid!!!
oi! i have over 4 and a half hours worth of blink 182 cds.

i do. i play an ibanez with a 19mm string spacing at the bridge, and a nut width of 38mm. and i also play my taitycaster, with a BADASS II bridge, and P bass width neck. so quite a big difference, and it is noticable when i play them, but provided i play them both it doesn't bother me. sometimes i've gone a month or so without playing one simply because i've felt like playing the other, and when i go back to playing it, it feels weird, but i get back in the swing of it really. what you need to do is play the bass, if you like the neck first time you play it, then its should be ok for you. swapping between 5 string and 4 string is supposed to be difficult though.
and centreline to centreline distance between the EA and DG Pups. they are touching... maths should make that 0.5d of EApup and 0.5d of DG pup. then the distance will be d, or the width of the pup.
don't they overlap though? so surely that doesn't work. i make it about 35mm, but thats really roughly done. that shouldn't matter anyway if its not a p-bass, you need to string the bass, then put the pups in a position where the pole pieces are roughly underneath the strings (or either side of the strings, depending on what pups you're using, some have only 2 pole pieces per pup, some have 4), make sure it looks ok, and then use that position. obviously you'll want to check they're centred and everything, but thats how i'd measure how much the pups overlap. EDIT: oh wait, are we talking height or length? i was talking length, but i think LukeFRC was talking height. so i was imagining the centrelines to go vertical between the E pole piece and the A pole piece, and the other centreline verticle between the D and G pole pieces.
