I voted 2. Jazzes have to have a pickguard IMO. And as much as I like cream pickup covers, not on this bass!

a spare 20 grand.. which bass shop in the world?
Tait replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
For me it'd be maybe 2 basses from Jon Shuker, I'd buy myself a decent amp (no idea what, I literally know nothing about amps, but I wouldn't spend more than £1500 on it), so that'd come to maybe £4500? I wouldn't spend the rest on bass gear. I reckon I'd spend £2000 on sword fencing stuff, and other than that I don't know what I'd spend it on! Beer and skittles probably. -
Tbh I think I'd be ok provided it was no more than a 5 string. If it was a fretless I'd keep it simple, but I do occasionally play fretless so I'm not terrible at it. 5 strings I don't mind because I can just ignore the B string and I used to have an OLP 5 string that was my main bass for a while. But six strings confuse me - not because of the number of strings as such, more because the 4 standard strings are in the middle, with the extra's either side. Horrible strings are my biggest problem. I think if anything was to put me off it'd be that. Or really low pickups, something like a Telebass, that annoys me.

Which mainstream artist would you like to play for?

Plan B, without a doubt. -
1 high end bass or 3 good basses for same dough?
Tait replied to ziggydolphinboy's topic in General Discussion
Maybe a high end bass that you won't worry about getting a few dings on? I mean, looking at all the basses in your profile picture, they're the sort of thing that I'd be terrified of getting a scratch or a chip or something on. When I built myself a custom bass I specifically went for a style that I thought "I won't mind too much if it gets a few dings on it, it's there to be played". Maybe a custom built sunburst jazz or something? It'll play and sound like a high end bass, but look like a Fender so you wont mind the odd ding that you're probably going to get on a regularly gigged bass. -
You get Custom Shop Fenders costing around that much, I'd rather pay £2000 for an Ibanez than a Fender.

Whats the hardest bassline you've learnt and why?
new born - Muse not an overly difficult run but difficult to keep it going! making my way through 'Overjoyed' by VW but keep getting my fingers tied up in knots
+1 to New Born. Like you said, it's an easy enough bass line, but when you try to play it all the way through it's pretty tough. A bit like the end bit to Bullet In the Head by RATM, I spent ages practicing being able to play that all the way through! -
Basically, I've got a mate who plays piano to an amazing standard. We've had a couple of mess abouts, him on piano, me on bass before, but we've decided over Easter a group of us are going to meet up. Now we're just trying to think up songs that we can play. Ideally we want to keep into popular music that we all know and enjoy, rather than going into obscure stuff for the sake of finding a piano part. We're all to a pretty high standard of playing, although I have to admit I'm a bit worried about what the singer will be able to handle, and theres a couple on the suggestions we've made I'm not sure he'll be able to sing, but he can give it a go! Just to get an idea, these are our suggestions so far- Your Song, Elton John Infatuation, Maroon 5 It Ends Tonight, All American Rejects (I don't actually know this one, so I'll have to give it a listen) This Aint A Love Song, Scouting for Girls Lovecats, The Cure (admittedly, this was my selfish choice. I wanted to give my double bass abilities a bit of a test, I've not been playing long) So you get an idea of the sort of stuff. Coldplay, Oasis, anything like that really. I figured this is the place to ask, anyway! Thanks!

Hit Me With Your Rythm Stick, and because my brother's drum teacher bet me his house I couldn't learn it in time for a gig we were playing. He still owes me that house. -
I pay too. I must use it for 8 hours a day during work, my cycle to and from work and listening at home. Absolutely vital to my sanity! The idea of browsing Youtube every 3 minutes for the next song seems ridiculous.
I may be wrong, but I don't think many people listen to every song on youtube. I think most people that use Youtube will be in a similar position to me. I listen to most of my stuff of iTunes, all music I've paid for. I could then create an identical playlist on Spotify, but that'd mean there being adverts every few songs. Now, although Spotify is free, I hate the adverts, so I'd either have to spend £5 a month on Spotify, or just buy all my music. I don't spend £5 a month on music, so buying my music is cheaper. For the odd occasion that I need to listen to a song I don't own, I'll Youtube it. There's no reason not to Spotify it, I just generally go to Youtube first.
-
I'm going to stop using it. I've not used it in ages anyway. I usually just plug my iPod into my speakers at home, and when I need to find a song I don't own, I tend to just Youtube it. I think the changes are going to ruin Spotify though.

Squier Classic Vibe 50's P Bass Butterscocth Blonde
Tait replied to Grand Wazoo's topic in Bass Guitars
I had one in my previous 50 Classic Vibe the blue one, I did like it a lot, but I want to try something else. Thanks, its ok I can wait that time. I mean its not as if i dont have anything else to play SLIDESHOW
Mate, I think there's something wrong with your camera. All your basses seem a bit wonky! -
I think I saw the original title on the "Last Post Info" section of the main page, came on here to read it, and it was deleted!
But is it? I think what we are discussing here is the disparity between the two. The price is the thing that most of us agree is up to the seller to set - delusional or otherwise it is their right. The value is the figure that the majority (hopefully including the seller if they have their feet firmly planted on terra firma) has in their head.
See, I disagree with this. I'd say my Taitycaster or my Ibanez are more valuable to me than they are to you. My Taitycaster is a custom, unique to me, and I've had my Ibanez pretty much since I started playing. But you don't care about that, all you see is one custom bass and one slightly worn Ibanez. Now, I'm not saying that I should ask for more because of this, because it isn't worth more. I'm simply questioning the difference between value and price.
-
I don't see any reason it couldn't work, but the main reason I'm posting is to ask why you've flattened the top horn? It just seems like an odd modification, and was wondering if there was a specific reason, or just for aesthetic reasons?
Ignorin the down-tuning, the SRT is the old Soundgear shape, but curved, the same as my SR1000 Prestige. If I were to ever get a backup for mine it would be an SRT. Lightest, most comfortable bass I've played, highly recommended!
Yeah, sorry, I was so busy thinking about the downtuning I didn't answer your question. I've never played the SRT900, but I own an SR500 and it's one of my favourite basses I've ever played. My Dad used to own an ATK and a Roadgear, and again, they were fantastic basses. Every other Ibanez I've ever played has been absolutely brilliant, so I'd have to say buy in confidence provided you like that sort of bass - my Dad says he's not a huge fan of my Ibanez because the neck's too thin, and I know others say they're too modern sounding (basically they don't sound like a Precision!), and others say they're too light and feel like they're playing a guitar. But if those things don't bother you, or are what you're after in a bass, IMO Ibanez can't be beaten.
-
Wouldn't tuning UP to C make more sense? As in one semitone?
-
A poll would probably be helpful for seeing which one has most votes! But my answer is Bass 2 both pickups was my favourite sound. However, for the solo'd pickups and the slap sound, Bass 1 won by a mile! Although I'd be content with Bass 2 both pickups if I had to have just one.
-
Wow, this is really cool mate! It looks a lot better now, you could hardly believe it started out as a fairly cheap bass!
-
That's fantastic looking! I want one now! Although I'd go for either natural or proper white (you know what I mean, white white!) instead of off white personally, but thats just me! Very cool though!
-
It's a bit of a shame all the major characters are on the back though. I mean, its clearly a bass made to be looked at, so if it's hanging on the wall or sat on a guitar stand, or even strapped around your neck when you're playing it, no one can see the back!
-
I think this is the first time I've ever said this, but the BADASS bridge ruins it! Normally I love the appearence of a BADASS, but there's something that doesn't work here!
-
Sounds like a definite luthier job from me! Of course the obvious recommendation is Jon Shuker. I've never heard of Tom Waghorn, but if he's good and he's local, sounds like a plan!
