Surely a Squire Standard Precision should be in your sights at that price level. I'm sure they are readily available at £160 ish? David H
you wont get a squier standard for that price, you could easily get an affinity.
P.S. I'm currently buying bits to upgrade the Squier, I miss it on stage! Any suggestions for killer mods, or shall I just go the nice easy Seymours and Badass route?
I've taken that route, if you wanna be safe it makes a great bass. I've also added a precision neck to mine, I can't stand the jazz neck.
Laklands aren't that well known in non-bass circles. That's it, really.
I was thinking that. I wouldn't say that Laklands are well known, because they don't make guitars. And the general public LOVE guitars, not basses.

Need help! What fingerboard wood for my Shuker Custom?
Tait replied to Mike's topic in General Discussion
i went other, because i love that indian rosewood. The macassar is cool, too, but i don't like the ziricot. -
as a starter bass id reccomend going for a passive, you'll be less worried about tone and concentrating more on getting good, which IMHO is more important. if you feel the need for an active bass later on you can save up and definatly go for the SR500, more expensive but it is a BRILLIANT bass!

thanks guys, thats what i wanted to know.
-
lots of shops on ebay will sell em, i'd guess.
-
I don't know what model it is, the info I've got is this:- Trace Elliot V Type Valve preamp 240w 4x8 inch Im not sure about 4x8 inch, I'm not sure if this means speaker size or what, its quite big so 4x8 inch seems wierd to me, but i dont know much about amps.

cheap ibanez soundgear or squier vinatge modified. i love my soundgear, id get the best one you can get in that price range. about the squiers, you wanna play both the precision and the jazz, and tell us what music you like so we can recommend which one would be best for you.

my bass teacher has just bought an amp (an old trace elliot v-type) for really cheap, and wanted me to find out how much its worth for him, because he knows i go on this site and he cant find any details. Does anyone know anything about it? How much is it worth?

I'm only really a fan of the white and sunburst ones, I always feel jaguars have to look old and retro, but the black and red look modern. The white seems a completely different bass to me, much cooler than the black or red.
-
why not go for a fender similar to the squier? you're less likely to regret it if its a better bass. definatly dont keep it if you cant get along with it.

How do you cope playing live with more than one band?
Tait replied to Thunderthumbs's topic in General Discussion
I've got one like this coming up soon. I just asked if my other band could play, too. Then again on that one there are several bands playing, in a wedding or something you couldn't do that... lucky we're not good enough to play weddings. -
1stly - good luck with the build ! 2ndly - I was gonna buy that body but I guess you beat me to it ! I was gonna strip it then stain it (got some black stain - used b4 looks pretty good) then metal pickguard. Got 1 on Geddy Lee jazz - looks ace .. (tho maybe not everyones taste) .. gonna put 1 on Warmoth jazz too ! Already had tuners & noiseless pups ready .. guess I'll have to sell em now. Unless another jazz body & neck come along (cheap ! lol) Si ps. will watch this space to follow your progress
i think i saw that, was there a thread about it a while back? if its the one I'm thinking of it looked cool.
Haha, when you said two-tone was BORING, i was then expecting you to come out with "Purple Sparkle" or something.....but no.....White!! lol I love sunburst And Olympic White But i am coming round to the idea of Black But we'll see Also it seems you can get the Hipshot Ultralights in standard Peg Hole sizes, so that either opens up some other neck options, or knocks $25 off the Warmoth price I've also been considering Wizard pickups which i know are very popular, had a quick email with Andy. They're in the running i think, but it all still seems to point to the Dimarzios! hmmmm Si
I thought you were deciding between white, two tone sunburst or black! Surf green is my favourite colour for a jazz, by far. (although i did used to have an ocean turquois one that looked amazing)

You could say that the telecaster type bass is a "proper" precision. I think they stopped using this design for a precision and turned to the design we know as a precision in... 1958, 1959 maybe? around then, not quite sure exactly when. I'd go for a mike dirnt precision if you like the shape but also like a precision pickup.
You missed the better quality paint finish, the better quality tuners, better neck, hard case, better electronics... I reckon if you upgraded a Highway One to the same spec it would cost you more than an American Standard. Up to you if you think the differences are worth paying for but aesthetic? I don't think so. Both are still too expensive (at Sterling rates)
Ok, I'll admit it isn't purely asthetic. But still, I cant see huge differences between say... the 57 reissue and the 62 reissue, or the standard and the 50s precision. All I think is that they should make say an active precision, the big block precision, the american deluxe precision and a simple, standard precision.

easy, travis barker.
Cant see what they offer over the HW-One series. I do like the look of the Maple necked Blizzard Pearl one though.
I can't see what they offer over the mexican standard, or the highway ones, or any of the other precisions out there. I've just had a count, excluding 5 string varients, left handed varients, and models with more than just a p bass pickup, there are 7! There is also an active precision I've not included. I've looked it up, most of these differences are purely asthetics, I think its way OTT.

not two tone sunburst! BORING!!! white in my opinion.

squiers are excellent basses, the pups let them down a little so the first thing I'd do is change them (of course, you may like the pups, just my opinion). I have a squier standard precision, its a brilliant bass. I'd put a BADASS bridge on, too. I played the squier mike dirnt at the london guitar show, its a lovely feeling bass. Definatly go for it if you like it. EDIT: +1 for the emgs below, my dad has some in his precision, they sound great. just like to add seymour duncan quarter pounders sound good, too.
Thanks guys. Where's the best place to get new ones?
www.guitaremporium.co.uk

i have the ibanez sr500, and if its anything like that then they are excellent basses. the srx400 looks cool, too. (only in the pewter, not the red)
-
that is sooo ugly! how can anyone in their right mind like that? no one is EVER going to buy it. on a more serious note- why does it need a control plate and a rear cavity? is it just this bass or are there others like that?
-
can i just ask, what are the up sides to the floating thumb technique? i always use an anchored thumb as i find it much easier, and it seems a waste of effort movin that thumb around all of the time. where do you put your thimb when playing the e string?
