1. i find if i don't know what to play, i learn my favourtie songs. even easy stuff like blink 182 where its just the root being played as quavers makes me much more into my bass. then i start learning stuff thats going to improve my playing, like slap lines or funk lines. Red Hot Chilis is a great balance for me, i find i learn something new with every song i learn, but it is enjoyable to learn because i am a fan. on the other hand- soul man by (i think) sam and dave is a cool line, try learning that
2. started on piano but i was rubbish. then went to guitar. finally bass.
3. whats a fat finger?
4. just started fretless, and i loves jazzes... so tempted... if i hadn't just bought a jazz i would
5. try here
6. in my opinion they are the hardest bass lines to just to play on the spot. i've got the basic idea right, but i can only play a twelve bar blues in the key of F because thats all I ever practised it in
7. i do love it! over the last week, since I started playing fretless, the only reason I've touched my fretted bass is to practise slapping. thanks for these suggestions guys, keep 'em coming.
8. £50-£100?
9. its looking cool, but personally i'd say either a black or tort pickguard would really finish it off.
10. cool bass, I especially like the lefty neck, it looks great! how did you relic the body? it looks very realistic to me.
11. don't worry about tapping your feet, people only say you should tap your feet because they think it will make it easier to keep in time. if you can keep in time without tapping your feet or doing the chicken neck, then why bother doing either?
12.
Maroon 5, he's alright, hold's down the groove quite well but thats about it.
True, he only plays roots, but he keeps a groove really well. I was listening to songs about jane the other day, thats what made me mention him, and i thought that some of the rythms he plays are quite complicated and it must be hard to keep that groove. I wouldn't know, though, I've never tried learning any of his basslines.
13. has anyone said Mickey Madden?
14.
You cant be serious? Whoever was responsible for your musical education should be sacked Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker - collectively known as Cream. As for fretless toons, I tend to prefer playing more melodic bass lines on the fretless but when I gig I just play what I feel like playing. Sometimes I'll use the fretless all night - other times I dont use it at all. Good stuff to look at is bands that had fretless players like Bad Company and Japan. You could always try some Jaco if you want to tie your fingers in knots.
I've heard of Cream, just not the song Badge.
15. sorted, it was anti pop
16. nobody wierd like me- Red Hot Chili Peppers, I'm just not fast enough EDIT: I can now play it!!! just took a LOT of practise!!!
17. WHO'S BADGE BY? edit: sorry, caps lock was on.
18. I'm just starting to learn fretless and so far I'm transferring things like Red Hot Chili Peppers onto it. Are there any songs that are worth me listening to and then learning to play specifically to improve my fretless playing? What sort of stuff do all of the other fretless players out there play?
19.
I dunno, the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain's version is pretty darn good!!!!
well, yes I'll give you that, they do a decent cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit.
We cover this. To be fair though our singer can hit the notes, though it still lacks something. We manage to segway Boston's 'More than a Feeling' into Teen Spirit. The Boston song doesn't really fit with the rest of our set (and I don't personally like it) but it's worth it when you see the smiles creep across peoples faces as Teen Spirit kicks in over the top of it! As regards covers generally, if you're an originals band don't bother with any cover unless you're going to do something original with it. If you're a covers band, it's your job. People want to hear popular songs in your genre - it seems churlish not to perform one because it's a classic!
as I said, I've never heard a band that can do this successfully. I'm in no doubt that there are bands out there that can do it well, I'm just saying its hard.
20. yeah, primus is the band i was thinking of. none of those albums ring a bell, though. are there any with normal names?
21. hi, does anyone know the name of les claypool's band? my bass teacher told me an album thats got some great bass playing on it and suggested buying it, so also could you name some albums by the band to see if any ring a bell. thanks
22.
Mustang Sally Teenage Kicks Smells Like Teen Spirit. This list is endless.
+1 for smells like teen spirit, unless you have an excellent singer who can sing it well. i've heard a few bands play it, including my own, and none of the singers can reach some of the higher notes. the only band ive ever heard do it successfully (except nirvana) are my dad's band before their origional singer left.
23.
Tried that .. "It's got to be in for 12 weeks before we will take an offer" It's £90 and battered and not a nice battered .. just normal neglect .. Thanks Chaps
i think normal neglect looks better than when you try to batter it anyway, seems more natural and realistic than "relics".
