I keep this around for any such problems. "The sound man said I could borrow your amp" "Yes you can, I'll just go get it"
is that one of those carlsbro heads? a rehersal room i sometimes use has one of them, with some beat up old cab, no idea what it actually is, pretty old and not exactly in pristine condition either. i actually quite like it.

dr1, thats because your serial number is JV2. earlier in the thread someone said that its only the JV0 serial numbers that had big fender little squier, after that they swapped it.

this looks awesome! i can't wait to see it finished! i'm really loving the orange, and what with waynepunkdude doing his orange refinish a little while ago, and now this, i'm GASing more and more for an orange bass!

it depends, are we paying? if we're not paying, so if money wasn't a problem, i'd go for the pre CBS, just because i've always thought it'd be cool to have one, and besides, its always going to go up in value. if we had to take money into consideration, which i assumed we were when i voted, i'd go for the japanese standard, but since that isn't on the poll i'd go for the american standard. the fact the pre CBS is vintage and interesting isn't enough for me to pay the extra two grand i'm afraid.

jimmy coppolo would be a good name for a mafia man.
Hmmm, no bridge pickup. When finger playing I always finger close to the bridge. Only a neck pickup on that one.
i dunno if that was a joke that i just didn't get... but there is a bridge pickup.

essentially i'd do my Taitycaster but with a precision body. ash body, natural finish. black pickguard. seymour duncan quarter pounder precision pickup, seymour duncan ceramic musicman pickup. 2 band EQ, with pickup selector, and (although i don't have this on my taitycaster, i wish i did) an active/passive switch. maybe white or black finish, instead, both with black pickguard, both would have matching headstock.

ibanez basses tend to have smaller bodies, or at least, the soundgear series does. i think the ATK is more fender sized, not sure about the BTB or any of their other series. tbh i think most modern bass designs will have the smaller body, things like the Ibanez and the Yamaha. not really my sort of basses (although i actually love my SR500), but there are plenty out there.
Some people need to learn to think for themselves. Some questions have been perfectly valid, yes. You continue pretending to be 'mentor'.
care to say which questions you thought weren't valid? and why you felt it necessary to be so rude in your previous post, anyway?
Sorry people, but is this guy a wind up? Five pages of a thread about buying a cheap bass? I'm all for giving 'noobs' a little guidance but he's taking the piss here. Everything has to be spoon fed. What's this? What's that? The information is out there, stop being so lazy. I think people have been more than helpful enough. What do you want next? For them to actually buy the bass and play it for you? I understand that knowing the market, what options you have, your future plans and expectations etc. are important when making a purchase but it's not a house you're buying is it? You want a bass and amp for home use but you're not sure you're going to stick at it. You need something that you won't grow out of too soon if you stick at it but will be easy to sell on without a loss if you don't. You want to be Flea on a budget of around £250. You need to get over being a weirdo and buy used gear. Here, I've done the hard work for you: OLP Stingray Hartke combo
what is your problem? this is a bass forum. its for talking about basses. if you don't want to talk about basses, don't come on a bass forum. so he's asking some questions, don't all beginners? he wants the best for his money, and i don't blame him. also, why is he a weirdo because he doesn't like used gear? are you trying to push away new members? you're not exactly making it seem welcoming around here. oh, and FWIW, DreadAlert, the OLP D-L-B put a link to in his post would be a decent buy, i used to own one (mine was a five string though), and it was really cool. a great bass for a beginner, and for £140 its a good price! and a very cool colour, IMO.
I'd love to hear that. A bass that can do a better MM tone than a MM can.
FWIW i can see why someone would prefer the sound of the active OLPs to a MM, mainly in a band situation. its a lot more punchy than a musicman, like a mix between a precision and a MM. i liked it.
-
I've had both the passive ones and the active ones. I really liked them both, the active one was in a completely different league to the passive, admittedly, but i really liked the passive one too. either i got a good one, or you got a bad one, because i thought mine was great. not a stingray by any stretch of imagination (unlike the actives, which get suprisingly close for so much less money), but definitely a gigable bass IMO.
I'd love to come but I am sadly not around that weekend, so I wouldn't be able to bring my Wood&tronics beauties.
oh it'll be a shame if you can't bring that W&T you brought last year, it must've had the lowest action i've ever played! it was an absolute beauty!
found a copy of the bass VI on rondo site http://www.rondomusic.com/argustoaskbk.html or even nicer in lake placid blue http://www.rondomusic.com/arguslpb.html
ooh i like that. i don't really know much about baritones, is that E-E?
I'll do my best and try and get down to Fairdeal music on the weekend. What do you guys think of the Squier Standard Jazz Bass? Does the VMJ stand out as better value for money or are they pretty much the same?
i really like the standard jazz. i'd say they're pretty much the same, although i've only ever played them, never owned either.
Also, I just saw this in Argos. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/part...ESTARCASTER.htm Isn't that quite cheap for a fender?
i'd say stay clear tbh. although i've never played one, argos aren't exactly renown for their high quality guitars.
Yeah I'll probably pick up a practice amp. The Ibanez SR300 sounds good.
i'd highly recommend these, that'd be the one i'd go for out of all of the ones mentioned so far (although admittedly, i haven't played all of them) . you'll also noticed a huge difference between the SR300 than the GSR200, the SR300 is built so much better. also, about the squiers, definitely standard jazz, VMJ, CVJ over the affinity.

FWIW i thought the grosvenor was good as well. just my two pence.
Thanks for the encouragement! My first prototype will be in black with white binding, unbound rosewood board with dots and mostly chrome hardware. The one headache I have is sorting out a chrome cover for a DiMarzio Model 1 as they usually come with a black cover already attached. If I get around to doing a piezo bridge version I'll do it in natural blonde with a fretless ebony board. Anyway, more laminating to do....
sounds great!
Bloody hell, it's nothing compared to drummers - Keith Moon, John Bonham, Jeff Porcaro (Toto - bizarre gardening accident, Nigel Tufnel would be proud ), Razzle, Eric Carr, The Rev (Avenged Sevenfold)...I'm sure there's more, I just can't pull them to mind right now...
not to mention the various drummers spinal tap had over the years.
I think you can find plenty of examples of guitarists, drummers and vocalists who died early. You can also find plenty of examples of teachers, policemen, soldiers, lawyers, bankers, street sweepers and dinner ladies who died early. S.P.
one of my old dinner ladies got hit by a train.

ooh very nice! i've always been a fan of 335 shaped guitars and basses! what colour is it going to be? will it have binding? i gotta say i love 335s in white with black binding or vice versa.

Into brit pop? Punk? Patriotic? Like telecaster basses?
Tait replied to kevbass's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
i want. someone buy my guitar quick. -
i call the bass i made on my shuker course "the taitycaster", but thats just because it doesn't have another name. every other one is either called by the brand name or model, ie. my ibanez SR500 is either referred to as "the ibanez" or "the soundgear".

that sounds great! i've always loved the mark hoppus bass, and this sounds great! make sure to update with any pictures or anything you get. i'm looking forward to seeing this built.
