Recently they caught a few people who had taken copies out (with Fender & Gibson logo's applied) then returned with the genuine article. I presume they could confiscate until the duty is paid!

I think yours & Jennifers are higher models than mine (& the auction one) - your have soapbar pickups & dot markers whereas the auction bass & mine have a PJ configuration & the Dean logo as fret markers.

My gold hardware is looking a bit worse for wear now & it looks nowhere near as nice in black. Just picked it up for the first time in about 3 years & it brought back memories of bands & gigs from the past - sigh! It was my main bass for a long time - Still love it.

I'm never sure whether it's best to store them with the strings tuned to concert pitch or release the tension on them. Mine's still tuned.

The headstock is very understated compared to other models but I prefer that. I love the neck on mine & the only thing wrong with the bass is that someone removed the active electronics so it's passive only now. Still sounds good though. Nice to know someone else on this forum has one!

Notice the cut out for your forearm. I think these were manufactured in Korea probably mid 90's as I bought mine secondhand in early 2000. For a five string the string spacing is quite narrow which is good for me as I've got smallish hands. Any info would be welcome. Cheers!

[/quote] Yes you're right there is no excuse these days with a good choice of decent quality inexpensive instruments - there are even schemes to help young kids or their parents buy them. I well remember when I started playing the awful guitars & basses that were the only ones we could afford (even then we relied on a friendly shop owner to allow us illegal credit - if it wasn't for him I wouldn't be playing now!). Things like Jedsons & Zentas where you used to cut your fingers on the bridge adjustment screws & the fret ends & you could never set the intonation on them or keep them in tune. Now those same Jedsons & Zentas are increasing in price - madness. If you were lucky you eventually got hold of a third or fouth hand Antoria or Kimbara. Wish I still had my Antoria SG!!

    Hi, I've got an Ashdown Perfect Ten Mini Rig on Ebay at the moment SOLD I've also got a rare Westfield Explorer 6 string guitar (ever seen another one?) in classic black with a white pickguard. It's a copy of the 50's Gibson Explorer with chrome pickup covers rather than the later open type pickups. It has a set neck & plays really nicely (if anyone is interested in this I'll try to get it out of storage & take some pics). There are a few marks from use but on the whole everything is in very good condition. I'm looking to trade one or both items for a lined fretless bass. If anyone is interested please PM me.

I was given a Swift fretless electro-accoustic bass by someone who had bought it for their lad as a starter bass & the "setup" was truly awful. It's been sitting in my garage with a heavy weight on it to get the horrific bow out of the neck but I'm not holding out much hope (I don't think the truss rod works!).

[/quote] I think that looks like a Marlin Slammer (although there is no Marlin on the fretboard so it could have been made after they were taken over) . They were produced for a company in Wales (I think it was called British Music Strings) which was eventually taken over by Hohner & then closed down. They were mainly sold through catalogue companies such as Marshall Ward etc. I've just sold a Marlin strat which also had a "Made in GDR" on sticker on it (although I don't think they actually were, probably just assembled there) & had the truss rod adjustment at the heel end of the neck like your bass - hence the recess in the pickguard. My Strat had a nice flat fretboard which I preferred as I found it easier to play.

None refundable." - I think he's covering all bases (sorry for the pun) just in case the postman re-strings it with a full set on his rounds.

Good basis for building a great bass on the cheap. I used mine on a lot of my bands recordings even before I fitted the EMG's. Go for it!
