Tell Us About The New Years Eve Gig Your Band Is Playing This Year
Alexx replied to Bluewine's topic in General Discussion
We're also playing 3-6(ish), which seems an ideal slot. It's a 'Home' gig in our local so it's all very relaxed, and likely to be a decent crowd. Looking forward to it. -
I sawing them play in Manchester earlier this year, they were great fun and nice blokes. Worth seeing live, was a real buzz.

RIP. Talented guy. I'd recommend his book '12 Notes', a really interesting read.

Got lots on at the moment. John Grant on Thursday, Amyl and the Sniffers next week, then Khruangbin, Ibibio Sound Machine coming up. Seen Goat and Public Service Broadcasting recently, and debating getting tickets to see Jah Wobble interview/show. What a time to be alive!

I've left that one alone for a while, shown it - and me - some mercy.

Nice! Ta for that.

Thought I'd sit down to say and try to play/sing Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash on the bass. Hadn't factored in the weird structure, it's going to take a bit longer than I thought!

Wasn't sure whether to put this here or on the for sale section somewhere, it's part advice request part ad though. Bought two tickets for Bob Vylan, 2 November at the Manchester Academy via Dice. Looks like I won't be able to go, but it not possible to sell them back or put on the waiting list. Is anyone interested, or have any ideas how best to move them on? You'd need to sign up to dice app and I can transfer them. Paid £49, make me an offer. Or tell me to move along if this breaches forum etiquette!

I have the LH500, when I use it it's through a 1x12 (8 ohm) in a four piece, small gigs. Never had it above about 4, it's loud!

Have you ever paid to play a gig?
Alexx replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in General Discussion
First band I was in we had a relationship with a promoter, which involved a threshold we had to meet for a bringing people. It either meant we got a slice of something (never much though) or just a few drinks tokens, but our triumphant final gig failed to pull in the number of punters we'd been tasked to provide, so we somehow ended up having to pay them about £120 or something. What a swizz. -
We've finally got round to releasing this, and we are pretty pleased with it. It was a real learning experience recording it, and I'm obviously hearing plenty of things I could have done differently/better! https://open.spotify.com/album/5Bvbr5JPfraBVRZgZLgKH1?si=JIBaDoBPSDuE8uUuWc1GUg

Fender Rumble +1, mine served me well for exactly the use case you describe.

The preamp is ace, it can do woody and delicate right through to fulsome beefy bass. I love it.

Having wanted a fretless since borrowing a mate's acoustic for a couple of months, and being 5-curious as well I thought I'd dive right in and get both in one. Popped a bid on this and it came good, decent price I think, with a case thrown in. Got it a couple of days ago. So far, so impressed. It's mint, hard to believe it's been played before. Not as heavy as I expected, although the neck does dive a bit. It's really lovely to play, tweaked the set up and got the action very low. I've found it takes a bit of a mental shift, both in terms of starting to think about the options the B string provides, as well as the confidence to play without eyeballing my left hand. I'm hoping that it will help me train my ears a bit. The preamp and knob config is more complicated than I'm used to so still got some experimenting to do. But it seems to chuck out a great range of tones and overall the best thing about it is the sound. I've spent ages just widdling and making wonderful noises. Anyway, very happy with this, lovely bit of kit. Edit: I realise I should have taken the pic from a different angle given how these headstocks seem to be unpopular!

I have one of those, it's a good bass. I modded mine by knocking the gloss back with wire wool. Rough and ready but looks good to me. Was going to get a new pickguard but like the look with the black. Still may try a gold or mirrored one or something silly though! I put some beefier pickups in it too.

Adam Neeley did a good video on this recently. He sort of accepts that musical output is perfectly manageable for AI, but draws a distinction between that and the 'Turing test' of performing music, which he reckons is not plausible (albeit partly because 'hands'). It's interesting to reflect that all this may ultimately lead to a re-evaluation of the value of music as a live performance medium as opposed to a commercial output medium which is pretty much what it became over the course of the twentieth century. But that's just my speculation and clearly some way off. https://youtu.be/N8NyEjB_XeA?si=7f1mgnkIQbZFTrrZ Edit: I haven't yet watched the OP video, but will do.

I think there are a few mentions of this on talkbass. Looks like a good option.

Zoom B6 recently arrived. So far so very good, already looking at moving on some individual pedals. It's slightly overwhelming just playing with it on its own, but with a band practice coming up on Tuesday I'm expecting that using it in context will help me focus on what I actually need it to do. Top marks not just for how it sounds so far, but also for xlr out, double input (I want to dust off my Korg Monologue) and the fact it seems to double as an audio interface so we can use clips from Ableton out to the PA. Should massively cut down the load and setup overhead. And the tuner is ace.
