1.
I wasn't a punk 'fan' at the time and I'm still not. For me, it was too noisy, too extreme and I felt it relied too heavily on shock tactics to distract from the lack of musical ability. But, it did seem to wake up a music scene that had perhaps become a little stale and complacent. After the initial thrashing about, screaming vocals and spitting at people died down it seemed almost as though there was a wholeraft of new sounds rushing in to fill that void, some of it from within the 'punk movement' and some of it from further afield. So, as a musical genre, it's not for me, but from a 'clearing the decks' perspective I wouldn't want to go back in time and change a thing.
I'd agree with a substantial amount of the above. The most appealing contribution of the era for me was the social trend towards individualism. It led to the only time in modern history where psychological tests of conformity demonstrated a generalised trend away from conformity. Artists of the time were not afraid to explore new ideas in dress, music, comedy, art etc. Today, society as a whole seems more conformist than ever. Artists of all forms seem to operate inside accepted 'norms' these days. There doesn't appear to be much bravado towards self expression these days. Rather boring really.
2. Ahhhh.... the thought of my neighbor's reaction to the sound of bagpipes coming from my flat
3. The Everson website has some very nice piccys
4. Why is this bass still here ? should have gone ages ago !
5. Thanks for the replies folks. Now I won't feel like my avatar's employer while making guitar parts !
6.
Very close [pedant] It's actually 3.1mm short. 28.5 inches = 723.9mm. [/pedant]
Out of interest, why do you know this ? or maybe, how did you work it out ?
7.
727mm seemed a ludicrously random measurement, so I checked that in Imperial. I reckon Leo specified 28.5".
That would seem plausable wouldn't it ? given the era the Precision comes from an' all that. But it's still 727mm (so far !), as 28.5" is 3mm short of 727mm.
8. Just checked a RW Precision and a CV Precision. Both are 727mm from the point a string breaks over the nut (fretboard side) to the edge of the lower frequency pickup at the line you specify (specified this edge as there is a small gap between the pickups). Hope that helps
9. Now that's the idea tommo ! Did you notice any changes to audible frequencies with open strings after substituting a bone nut ? My first after school job as a butcher's boy helped me to finance my first bass amp and cab. I remember the butchers used saw blades with something like 15 - 18 teeth per inch to cut bone, much more than that clogged easily.
10. Hi all Looking at the topic of making my own bone nuts and bridges. I've heard cow bone is a good raw material to use. I'd imagine cutting from bone local to a hip or a knee would provide bone of the greatest density (sounds a bit Burk and Hare doesn't it ?), which would offer the best transmission of string vibration. Anyone have any experience or thoughts on this topic ? Thanks T
11. Can also use the pickup selector as a rhythm / instrumental quick sound change switch
12. Connect multimeter to both ends of one core of a lead. Carefully bend sections of the lead, thereby identifying area of lead with intermittent connection. Repair. Or just get new ones from OBBM !
13. The current band seems to play for hours at a time, so moderate to light weight and a decent setup are key requirements. Used a bass with active circuitry for a few years and while it sounded clear, passive pickups seem to fit the bill better as most of the numbers we play are at least a few decades old
14.
Just get some yellow and amber laquer pigment and experiment.
That's my kind of fun !
15. A thousand thanks for the replies Nugget and Lettsguitars. I'll chase up those suggestions. The rustoleum link appears to be to an American / Canadian site ?
16. Once someone answers my question about colouring a laquer, I'll add it to that resource !
17. Looking forward to seeing the rest of this, including the finished product. What a great way to spend your time
18. That's a good price - these basses punch well above thier weight
19. HI all I have a bass with a chip in the poly on the neck. On clear poly I usually just paint in some clear laquer to seal the finish against moisture. With care, I can usually make a fairly good repair that doesn't stand out. However, this bass is a classic vibe Precision, which has a yellowed poly finish. I'd like to match it somehow, but how ? Any ideas BC ? Thanks T
20. Look forward to hearing more Dave. If you're considering throwing the old neck anyway, is there any harm in having a go at repairing it ?
21.
Last week I bought a rack EQ as I was curious to see how much difference it would make to my tone when gigging. I used it last night with total roll off of 25 and 30 hz, nothing else, and the difference was immense - tighter, more focused sound and way more volume available before the speaker could be feel the pressure. So impressed, and well worth the money! This makes me wonder why more amps dont have sub sonic filters fitted to take out the frequencies that cause rumble and not much else? Cheers James
Out of interest James, what rack unit were you using ? Thanks T
22. I'd be interested to hear this topic explored, as it's something I'd like to do as well, once I know how.
