Just a quick note to say Phil has managed to double the size of his stand for BassGear at very short notice So that means twice as many Fodera / Alleva Coppolo / Zon / Shuker Satinline / Boulder Creek (& whatever else he can fit in his van) for people to try out I'm helping him out on both days so come and say hi if you get a chance. . .
I'll be around this stand too. Look forward to seeing you all there

Trombone going cheap
essexbasscat replied to essexbasscat's topic in Accessories & Other Musically Related Items For Sale
I'm not sure about posting it to be honest. As it's tatty and roadworn, I'd like the person collecting it to be able to see it before handing over the cash, even if it is only £15.00. I know I'm not exactly helping my sale by saying something like that, but I'd rather wait a bit and know that the person that takes it away will be satisfied with the deal. Hey ho -
I could use a better trombone, the slide on mine is a bit sticky and I've just taken a break from recording trombone parts to write this so apparently I do have a use for one! It would have to be posted though since I'm in York and I don't really have any excuse to visit Essex. Would it be prohibitively expensive to post?
The size of the box will probably push the postage costs up. I'm just a bit concerned that the postage costs will almost match the cost of the instrument ! Anyone going up York direction ? -
OK it's time to raise the profile of this event a bit. A few names up so far, but the more the merrier ! If anyone fancies doing a slot on the day, such as set ups, technique demonstrations etc please PM Dusty or me. Looking forward to some methodical A/B testing on the day too. Cheers T
pete.young is after one in the wanted section. Try drop him a PM.
Thanks for the post timo. Although it would have been ideal for Pete, he had second thoughts about persuing the Trombone after all. This one would be ideal for a beginner or someone looking for a Trombone they don't have to worry too much about. -
Hi all Dug a Besson Trombone out of the cupboard recently. Had a check over and found the following; It's complete with mouthpiece. The slider moves freely and it produces notes as easily as any trombone I've tried in the past. The bell is dented, but mostly holds it's basic shape overall. The laquer is pitted overall and worn in the usual hand regions. The case protects the instrument, but looks very, very tatty. It will need cleaning through, as I didn't do it when I acquired the instrument and I've no idea how many people have played it in the past or what their health / hygene was like. How about £15 collected, or exchange for a wide strap, or a reasonable set of long / medium scale flats, OBBM cable, or suggest something ? Thanks for reading Cheers T

So easily done. Hope all's well soon Pete

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I'll be looking into this one for a while and come back to update at some point with findings cheers T

Ok, there seems to be a consensus developing for rolling of the tip (or pad ? which is usual ? the best ? worse ?) of the finger. But where does the roll originate from ? is it a movement developed by rolling the arm above the elbow ? (to make a clockface movement with the forearm). Do people roll the finger from movement at different joints / combinations of joints of the arm ? I'd be wary of rolling the finger alone, as this could potentially damage the ligaments of the finger. What about the vibrato itself. Do people go for an even slow vibrato, or is it styled for the occasion ?
-
Been wondering about this one for a bit Vibrato technique for a fretted bass is kind of obvious, frets being what they are. But when it comes to fretless ? If you adopt the fretted technique for the fretless bass, it's a nice way to dig a trench in your fretboard, especially with roundwounds But some recent reading around technique of the Violin suggests that Vibrato comes from movement of the elbow, with consequent movement of the finger end rolling a small distance up and down the string. What about the fretless Bass ? Is there a recommended technique or learning approach for Vibrato for the fretless ? Are there varieties of technique ? Thanks for reading all
That's mentioned in the 'standing in the shadows of Motown book'. I think he composed the bass line lying down, I don't think he actually recorded it like that.
I must admit it is very cleanly played if he was bladdered. Even if he did compose it lying down, it's likely to have been recorded at the time and polished later. Does anyone remember ideas they've had when a bit the worse for wear ? -
Just received a set of DR Sunbeams from Mick, a very quick hassle free deal, with good information thoughout. CHeers Mick Tom
Saw Trevor in Waitrose last Thursday! (Apparently he gets a bit fed up of bassists asking him about 'Jean Genie') Regarding the OP, was n't it Jamerson / Funk Brothers on the original Jackie Wilson track? (Therefore could n't be a bum note.......!!!)
A huge +1 to the authenticity of the human touch, mistakes n'all. About Jamerson - didn't Marvin Gaye haul JJ out of a bar absolutely rat - ar**d back to the studio, where he recorded What's Going On laying flat on his back on the studio floor ? -

The octaves in the chorus. Is it possible to get that kind of expression without flats and dampening sponges ? Does anyone else find it almost too easy to over - emphasise the top note when playing those octaves ? -
There's an ad on T.V. doing the rounds at the moment and the sound track is (I get the) Sweetest Feeling, sung by Jackie Wilson Between the lyrics; 'Girl, when you hold my hand' / Bum note / I feel so grand that I could cry. Listening to it, the desired note to fit the melody is a tone lower than the one first struck, which the bass player drops to straight away. Thing is, it keeps coming back to me that the howler has actually become a characteristic of the song and that the melodically correct note would only detract from the song, which is to my mind, a real classic. What do you think ? If you played this song on stage, would you include the bum note ? as played on the song ?
