1. Been thinking about this one since my last posting. The drummer's behaviour does seem rather extreme. Gareth, do you have any ideas about; - HIS view of what the problems were ? - Was he provoked in any way (however minor the provokations may have been in your eyes) on the last night (i.e. a bit of biting at his edges by other band members for leaving? carry -overs from past differences of opinion ?) I only ask this as from what is written on this thread, his behaviour just doesn't add up when you reflect on it Good luck finding a suitable replacement T
2.
A shame when someone accepts the challenge to act like a professional then behaves like an amateur. A feather in caps though to those who take a 'show must go on' attitude and do the job they were employed to do. Grace under pressure - good on you all.
Couldn't agree more to all of this !! T
3. Have to agree with sentiments here that it's best to have both, if possible, as they are different animals. I've gigged my Rumour for over ten years and truly loved it as an actve bass. The tonal pallet on offer is hard to match, let alone beat. I've honestly yet to come across an another active bass with such a range of available tones. But it just doesn't produce that genuine passive Jazz sound - Now sorted with a Roadworn Jazz More GAS T
4. There is a certain 'something' about the black / maple combination...
5. let's go round again..... (not the average white band BTW) T
6. small fine threads on grub screws + string pressure = potential for the screw to jump a thread, especially if some aspect the engineering is less than the best. The nail varnish option works well. I've been using this trick for securing grub screws in pairs of spectacles for years. Works fine. Just acts like Loctite, but a more commonplace solution to the same problem. T
7.
JC's handle just about anything you can plug in.....I think they were originally designed as a keyboard amp
I remember this as being the case T
8. I've heard a warwick through a Roland JC 120, an amp that delivers full range acoustic amplification (like a hi-fi amp for your home sound system). Sounded impressive. T
9. As a bassist - a large garden shed on a set of allotments, Evesham hall (a large Norfolk mansion built on the profits of the sugar cane slave trade) and a list of back gardens with a band. As a brass band member - backs of trucks travelling around town between while I was 12 -15 yrs old, outside tube stations at November every year and wandering around town supporting carol singers playing trumpet. I don't remember being pelted with anything I do remember hearing the 80's band The Christians gigged a Westminster toilet for charity Quality ! T

Dear, oh dear, oh dear One of the things that drew me into this forum was the unpretentious warmth of Si's posts He will be sorely missed
11. why is this still here ? should have gone ages ago at this price
12. Why is it these things come up when I havn't got the cash ? T
13. Amp = Peavey Mk IV 400 series head. Reliable, powerful with tone aplenty. Average cost = around £80 - £100, although they do sometimes come cheaper. Don't let the price give you the impression they are in any way inferior. Speaker = peaveys, trace, ashdown (with updated cones if poss) etc can all be done for under £200 if you choose wisely Good hunting T
14.
Friday night at The Central in Nottingham for the Hellfire Harlots Roller Derby team party. Went really well. Mr Venom remembered that "VampireMan" - our forthcoming single - actually has a second verse with words and both the new songs were well received by the audience. And many thanks to the headlining band (who's name I can't remember) who not only stepped in as last-minute replacements for The Eviltones, but their bass player also leant me his amp after mine died some time between the soundcheck and the actual gig. Next gig's in a week's time. I can't wait!
Good luck getting that amp sorted in one week T
15. I'm going to address the title of the thread 'musical turning points' and not follow on 'bass playing turning points'. This may rather age the discussion a bit, but hearing 'Dark Side of the Moon' by Pink Floyd for the first time was an introduction to seeing music from somewhere totally new, at the time. It really was revolutionary in it's day. T
16. This will probably attract a few raised eyebrows, but try the Peavey MK IV 400 series head for a while. Old school for sure (the same as Ampeg), but a surprising good amp. Don't let the fact they are cheap put you off, the price in no way reflects the quality of these amps. I'd put mine up against an Ampeg any day T
17.
As something of a 'seasoned campaigner' on the buying & selling trail (check my Sig for my current status, lol) then I'd consider owning both side by side for a while if you can afford it & then selling the one that you like least when you've really had a chance to compare them. If you buy wisely and don't pay over the odds then you should get back something close to your initial outlay when you come to sell. You'll just be out of pocket for a while in between time. There are also some good interest free credit card deals around - I'm not suggesting simply getting into long term debt though, lol. I've been fortunate enough to have one particular bass on trial for about a month & have decided I pretty much have to buy it, I'm now selling more or less any of my basses that anyone wants to buy to fund it but I'm pleased I was able to have the trial period first
+1 to this, especially given the 'emotional' weighting applied to selling an instrument your family clubbed together to buy you T
18. Don't know answers to your questions in detail but I agree, Ska is great fun and I'd love to be in a Ska band myself. I'll be watching this one with interest T
19. Where are they having the wedding, Wembley ? that's got to be some HUGE venue
20. Absolutely no worries about Barrie folks, you can deal here with confidence bump for a great bass T
21. I'm no Warwick expert by any means, but I do remember Warwicks having what appeared to be adjustable brass nuts around the early to mid 90's sounds like you had a spot of good luck there T
22. Worth every penny. Peavey amps of this era are seriously good value for money and almost as reliable as the sunrise. Great gigging kit T
