thumb up or thumb down for slap? how do you do it?
thebuckets replied to thebuckets's topic in Theory and Technique
I started out playing slap with my thumb down until someone told me I'd get a better sound and better accuracy if I played with my thumb parallel ot the strings. Having switched to playing this way I appreciate that it is a far better way to play. It won't only help for learning double thumb etc., you can move up and down the strings more fluidly this way and you get a more powerful slap. Don't worry if it feels strange at first, it took six months for me to become accomodated to playing that way but I'm glad I did it.
Cheers that's what I'm wanting to hear. Been playing my slap pieces like that for a while now and thumb down just feels odd now. If its good enough in for Marlowedk, LG etc,etc..... -
Craig bought a set of ti flats from me. Trouble free transaction with good comms. Top man

The p works as a thumping p on its own. The mm is more like a power j on its own and a blend of both is my fave with a bit of bass boost. Really cuts through. This youtube of the 5 string gives a really good review The Sandberg VM5 Hardcore Aged - 10 Aug 2013: http://youtu.be/4OND1SBNDTs
Very nice dude, congrats! Glad you decided to stay with Sandberg.
cheers Oli. As the man who switched me onto Sandbergs I knew you'd be peased! You were right tho, once youve played them others feel like baseball bats. Maybe its the PLEK treatment, the neck is a dream and the set up out of the box is spot on. nice and low with no fret buzz or dead spots and the harmonics leap out.
Very nice very much like my VM5 Gorgeous instruments, that head decal (back) is new since I got mine https://scontent-b-l...419314460_o.jpg

That is cool.

That's bloody lovely. It's not helping my VM4 GAS at all though...

Really nice, would like a Sandberg, amongst others, lol.

Nice!
Cheers guys. it sounds belting as well, im really pleased with it. 'Bergs have the best necks and bridges ive come across. old school vibe with a range of tones from traditional passive to modern active. A real funk machine. That 5er looks nice though!

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/85lnozfgr6jmjsc/Ce_nkz5HHK I like p basses but I also like MM style humbuckers and Sandberg quality. What's the best? only one way to find out....fight! Or get a vm4! Nicest neck I've had on a p style bass. Usual Sandberg quality. Very versatile sound. Service from Mark at bass direct was excellent. And the colour scheme? well good enough for Jamerson and sir Horace good enough for me. Now I want a 5er!
I think they might be suggesting that they're not big fans of the slap style in general. I might be wrong of course..
you might be right tho! Doh -
3-Tone Sunburst P-bass, Maple or Rosewood finger board?
thebuckets replied to jackers's topic in Bass Guitars
Whend I started playing I always lusted after Maple boards as they only appeared on top end basses that I couldn't afford, but now I've had the chance to buy and play some higher end basses I find I'm a re fan and have to say 3ts/RW/tort just has classic written all over it -
If you check the diagram in the manual, it looks like the second tube only drives the FX loop and DI so therefore shouldn't have an impact on the main tone - so just changing the V1 tube, which should be the one on the right nearest the input should be enough to tame the gain control.
Nice one DB cheers
I'm intrigued by this thread. I like my Terror head a lot but certainly concur with the original post. So I contacted Watford Valves as having spoken to them before they clearly know their stuff. The recommendation I had back was http://www.watfordvalves.com/product_detail.asp?id=2325 and I've placed an order. If it's half as good as the description I'll be happy. I too own one of those Pro 40Db Inline Attenuator and have found it's only needed at some venues I've played. Pops right in the front of the carry bag & cheap enough to not have me panicing if I did happen to forget it one night.
Do you need to replace both valves with these or just v1 or v2? Cheers
Definitely thumbs down for slap.

Thumbs up for thumbs down....
Cheers guys just trying to get a feel of what people prefer. What makes thumbs down your preferred method? Or have you just felf more comfortable that way and stuck with it? -
thumb up or thumb down for slap? how do you do it?
thebuckets replied to thebuckets's topic in Theory and Technique
an easy exercise to begin with would be play 8th notes alternating between slap and pop, starting on your lowest string. this will get you slapping in a more closed position and in a smaller area , then when your fluid enough try adding in the up thumb,
Not really noticed anyone slapping then popping on the same string as its often octaves or hammer on/offs. Any vids ? -
Have a look at this from 15:30. Not a fan of his sound or feel, tbh... but the technique is there and well explained/demonstrated.
I've had a quick look at this. Nice one, cheers His technique is awesome and the exercises are worth doing for improving but Like you I'm not a big fan of just speed slapping, its got to have a groove. -

thumb up or thumb down for slap? how do you do it?
thebuckets replied to thebuckets's topic in Theory and Technique
A great way to start expanding on your slap technique, is to learn how to slap then pop on one string. this gets your right hand in a good position to start coming up with your thumb. Also this technique is great if you just want to emulate double thumbing..
Bit hard to visualise any examples? -
Its that very bass Did my homework so knew it wasnt a Supreme, very happy with it.
Nice one. I did make an offer. Hope you got a good deal. I'm a big Sandberg fan think they make great SH buys Enjoy!

There was one of these on eBay last week that I was thinking of taking a punt on. It was advertised as a supreme but they are all gloss black or cream on alder this looked like an ash black burst so more than likely a special.. Great P basses regardless well done

thumb up or thumb down for slap? how do you do it?
thebuckets posted a topic in Theory and Technique
Just wondering what the concencus is? I'm no great slapper myself but am working on improving my technique. Made myself play thumb up a la Marlowe dk, Victor Wooten Marcus Miller etc to allow me to move to doublethumbing as my technique improves, I see a lot of players playing thumb down a la Flea, Scott Devine, Marta Altea etc. Thumb up seems more usefull, thumb down looks much cooler IMHO. How do you play and what are the advantages/disadvantages you've found? -
Saw the trailer with the velodrome results but can't get the programme is it still available? Can't believe I missed an Horizon. Really interesting and thought provoking, well done Chris.
