Sandberg Ken Taylor Basic HH vs Musicman Stingray HH
thebuckets replied to hollowsbass's topic in Bass Guitars
Just sold 2 rays (fretted and fret less) to pay for a new amp and cab and picked up a near new basic with the change. No it's not a ray but it is a very high quality bass. I've had numerous fenders jazz and pbass both USA and Jap. And this is up there in sound and build quality. Its a lot lighter and perfectly balanced with a fast neck. The rays were superb with top quality of build. I'm missing my fret less but like to try new gear on my search of bass nirvana! But when I can play my 'berg like vlad I'll move on to something 'better' If a ray is really what your after you won't be disappointed but if your open to something a little different then sandberg will deliver as well -
Decide for me- OBT or Ashdown Mi and Barefaced
thebuckets replied to njr911's topic in Amps and Cabs
If you can get hold of the ashdown Lb212 its a British made cab (made by the people who make orange ) its well worth the extra over the vs and is a 4ohm cab so you get your full 500w out of it -

Having had both mi and otb my vote goes for the orange. If you can stretch to OTB and BF compact you'd have a light rig that would do practically any gig -
Ive played almost 20yrs and only had pa support once (in the Cavern in liverpool, and that was only so the sound guy could stop you being too loud i suspect) our band plays with backline only and always seems to have a good balanced sound that is loud enough. the OTB with a compact would be good for most but the largest venues IMHO

Ashdown damn you phone !

Small and lightweight: what should I look into?
thebuckets replied to 1976fenderhead's topic in Amps and Cabs
+1 orange terror bass not a massive range of tones but gets it right straight off the bat IMO -
just returned my HB Ba5110c to thomann (just got an orange Terrror bass and loved it-it seems my hunt for a new head is over :-) that said i still maintain that they (and the other clones) are a top piece of kit, very useable and practically unbeatable at the pricepoint. my fav was the Ibanez but id still be intersted in a Beta aivin

although ive settled on an orange Terror bass the Harley Benton head I had previously from Thomann is great value at £170 (or the combo with removeable head is £230) small but 500w and is very similar to the ibanez promethean head. as a back up its probably hard to beat
-
+1 on the Orange terror bass its not tiny but by no means big very compact and full of valvey goodness also in your price range (i got mine from dv247 cheapest around + a 4yr warranty)
You do get switchable 1x12 cabs - admittedly the only one I know is the Hartke HyDrive which is switchable 4/8ohms. Of course, if you use two of these you'd better make damn sure you've got the switches in the 8 ohm position if you're using them in parallel with a min 4 ohm amplifier
Wise words neep Does anyone know how does the hydrive dissipates the heat when switched to 8 ohm?

Orange Bass Terror - It's here, FULL review and PIX

Well I took the plunge and got one..... over the past 2-3 months ive tried an ampeg BA115HP combo, ashdown mibass 550, Little mark LM250, Promethean combo and a Harley benton 500w promethean clone! then Finally as a last throw of the dice the Orange terror bass I love it :-) Its given me a lovely cut through, 'real bass sound' with out any of the wooly mush ive had to deal with from some other amps. It sounds great with my active Sandberg and has lots and I mean lots of headroom to spare. I now feel I have a head to do my Ashdown LB212 justice. so glad i went for it. The EQ might not alter the inherant sound a great deal but if its right, its right, and the simplicity of this amp really appeals to me. Think of it as the vanilla of bass sounds but not your cheap, bargain supermarket vanilla but more a rich, creamy, luxurious english lakes/cornish cream vanilla. try one you'll see what I mean :-) the 4-8ohm switching means if I ever get my hands on that midget I've convinced myself I need it'll give its full 500w welly through it -

Thanks everyone. Just got my Orange Terror bass from them. They beat thomann by £8 knocking £41 off their own price. Gave 4 yrs warranty and delivered next day at the one hour time slot texted to me in the morning on the day of delivery.Very pleased :-)
I've got one, had it for a couple of years now and I really don't think you can get much more for your money. The fact that I can have one thing that is small and flexible enough to use as a home practice amp, that can hold it's own at small gigs (with a drummer) with no PA support, or as a stage monitor when things get a bit louder and has a removable 500W you can whip out and fire through a couple of 8 Ohm cabs, surely it's a bassist's wet dream! The 1x10 speaker obviously has it's limitations, but it's frickin' tiny! The clones are readily available and cheaper, but from what I've heard about them, the build quality isn't quite up to that of the Ibanez and although it sounds just fine as a combo, some folks have reported the head on it's own to be a little bit lacking, plus they're fugly Like thebuckets says, thomann have them in stock still >> http://www.thomann.d...hean_bstock.htm or http://www.thomann.d..._promethean.htm Eude
+1 i have to say the clones do a good job and are a steal at the price theyre being sold at, have the same speakers in the cabs and 90% same in the amps, but having had both in my hands the promethean sounded better IMHO and was a nicer finished package
-
now the price has gone up to 175 you might be better getting the combo at 230 just a little more gives you an amp for a small gig or home practice
-
last time I looked they were still in at thomann. they also had b stock at £460 with 3 year warranty but the clones are pretty damn good as well at half the price see the tread muskty has pointed you to

cheers guys sounds a winner
