How can i get a sound like my Trace V-type Combo?
Merton replied to Delberthot's topic in Amps and Cabs
Sorry, should've read your first post properly! Having pushed that combo pretty bloody hard in the past and having modelled the cab in WinISD i think you'd be hard pushed to blow the speaker. It moves a lot but shouldn't be a danger... Touch wood! -

<ridiculous pedant>Your v-type combo is 250W into 4 ohms<end ridiculous pedant> Ahem. The v-type preamp + poweramp is indeed the obvious choice but the next one i'd say to look into is a Hartke LH500. I spent a fair while this time last year A/Bing your combo and my lh500 into the combo's speaker and the Big One proto. Not a lot in it tbh, especially if you drive the front end of the lh500 quite hard (as i do) it makes a mighty similar noise :-) -
I've probably posted in this thread too much already, but I am astonished at some of the criticism (explicit or implicit) that is being levelled at Alex. <snip>
+2
Hang about guys!<snip>
Sorry Rob, I obviously got caught up in the ramble of the thread! I'm only popping my head above the parapet to offer a balanced view, i.e. that I have had none of the issues you have unfortunately had and I find that there is more than enough low end, mid and top end in the sound (for my tastes)

As a fellow Vintage owner, I've finally managed to catch up on this thread. My thoughts: Rob, let the speakers bed in and also play more with your amp EQ. I can get a very 80's grindy rock tone (think Queensryche, i.e. hartke 10 inch speakers and a GK amp). So the 15s are not the problem, it's (probably) the way you EQ. That said, from my experience on the Big One vs the Vintage, I think you may prefer the Big One as it would probably be "easier" to dial in the tone you're after. Maybe. The construction of my Vintage is top notch, it's been thrown in and out of the band van countless times by our less than gentle crew and it's survived fine. I think the cab is worth every penny I paid and I'm incredibly happy with the sound, the portability (one hand lift and I have the "old" ply!), the construction and the service I've had. There. Lovely! Mert
it weighs 14kg,should be available feb 2010.They assure me that the LB30 will be loud enough for gigging.i will be trying one asap.
Me too. Need to find £399 tho as I fear I may have to purchase one...
Tone - does the cab make your gear sound pleasant to your ears? Volume - is it loud enough for your needs?
I agree with your sentiment, but thwe above two points are directly infuenced by Vd, especially voume, so these specs do matter and make a lot more sense than the power handling figure most manufacturers give.

JJs should be nice; I tried Rubys in the 4x8 combo (now owned by Matt/Overwater#1) and they dirtied things up a bit vs the stock TE valves but I have to say I actually preferred the Sovteks in the 1x15 when I had it. Enjoy experimenting, it's half the fun
-
I remember that V-Type interior! What preamp valves did you go for and how do they differ from the Sovteks?

Just bought the EBS Octabass back (see above!) and as ever was a pleasure and dead easy Cheers Dave, you're a star

Hello! So I sold an Octabass last year to Rumple and spent a looong time regretting it. Finally decided to go for something slightly different - the Ashdown Bass Sub-Octave Plus - and then Rumple sticks the Octabass back up! You can guess where this is going... Basically I need to shift this, as I prefer the EBS. It cost £39.99 + shipping and is about a month old. It's been gigged once so is in perfect condition and I've still got the box as shown: Basic spec: this does an octave down, plus that down octave with distortion as an extra option. Sounds great, I just prefer the cleaner EBS (though I admit I bought this as I thought the dirtier Ashdown sound might suit). It seems happier with passive basses, though there is a mod you can do to match active impedances better - search the relevant pages if you so desire SOLD PENDING PAYMENT, VIA FLEABAY Ta! Mert
The thing for me Rene is that with the vintage i have SO much headroom, I dont need to find a tone that cuts through my band. I can find a pleasant tone and just make it loud enough for people to hear! It really is a revelation on that front.
+1. I did a gig last night with my crappy homebuilt 1x15 and really missed the Vintage. My 1x15 has its own tonailty which I like (hence why I designed and built it as such) but it is so massively inferior to the vintage it really shows!
We play it in Db in my covers band. I use standard tuning (there are no open strings) but the guitarist tunes down a semitone
We do it in Db and none of us downtune. Our guitarist is weird/clever/wrong (delete as applicable)
Awww hell yeah. 3 Sides? Classic...
Hell yes. -
Oh, and it might be a good idea to check with them on the position of the side handles. There was a 1 cm difference between the position of my handles and the position they had on file from the first Vintage cover they made (Merton's, I believe), which could have been really annoying if I hadn't checked. And I'm pretty sure Alex has moved the handles now he's using the new, lighter ply, because the balance point's shifted. Or something like that.
Yep. My cover is out by about 0.3cm coz of my dicky measurement, but clearly BottomEndian's handles were in a slightly different position and the new lighter ply cabs have changed again! So remeasure yourself. Very happy with the cover though
