Ha, nows the tricky part. I have no idea what aspect of the construction makes it sound like that! It could be any of these: * The overwide, overthick neck; * The strange choice of neck material; * Placement of pickups; * Choice of pickups (cheapo ebay); * The coice of (very heavy and hard) body material; * New strings? Or any of a number of other factors I havent even thought of? But more importantly, how do I recreate a similar souding bass with the changes to specs and materials we are planning? Hmm. Suppose its all guesswork till after its finished!
Indeed, I was thinking the same thing immediately after I posted. Are the strings the Status ones I sent up to you? I guess all your points above, save for the picukup placement, will change on the basses you build for me and you after this one (though even the PUps will move by a few mm coz of their different dimensions...) Hmmm. Guesswork is what makes this fun
Price reflects rarity
The irony of this is not lost on me - almost immediately after I posted this FS thread one of these 4x8 cabs appeared on ebay. It sold last night for £182.77, which is a bargain. Have a look here. I've priced mine at £225. I was thinking that means £200 for the cab and £25 for the extra two drivers. Sounds fair to me! Any interest?
Just had an email from Steve after he tried your rig: "Two words would sum it up, and they rhyme with "clucking bell". I am seriously impressed, especially with the weight - I'd be very happy taking that on the tube with a MarkBass and my bass ... Can't believe the response out of a single direct radiating 15" driver ... Bloody awesome stuff." I think he liked it! Alex
I think you might be right. he's been on about it over at Finnbass too.. And a well deserved accolade it is, for the Compact is a very fine cab (do I get one free now?!)
Good work chap. I have a Ruby in mine [cheers Mert ] - high gain, flat response, less top than the stock Sovtek - lovely.
No prob! I have the stock EH in my LH500, tried a Sovtek, Raytehon and a Ruby and none did it for me in the way the EH does. As eightball says, "loud, smoother and brighter up top. lows more defined and tighter". Just wish I'd neve rsold my old Trace 12-band head with the Sylvania still in it, that would sound awesome in this methinks

I love it! You should licence the design to Iceni so they can sell one to me

Looks amazing, such a quick build too! Looking forward to final pics
Is it considered rude to put up soundclips before the bass is finished?
Absolutely not, bring it on!!

I have to say, on Saturday I gigged my Status Retroactive thru the Hartke LH500 and Trace 1518 and absolutely loved the sound, really looking forward to the next gig with it All I have to think now is, if/when I can sell the Trace cabs and get the Barefaced Compact, what a perfect sound I will get

ALL SOLD, THANKS! OK people, the time has come for me to put my money where my mouth is and buy the cab I've been harping on about for ages - the mighty Barefaced Compact. Therefore, with much regret but hope in my heart, I am letting these two fine cabinets go, a 2007 Trace Elliot 1518 and a V-Type 4x8 cab. They're my favourite Trace cabs ever, the 4x8 is one which I will truly miss as it's a great little cab, but needs must and I need lighter, louder gear V-Type 4x8 - SOLD A cracking cab. 240W, 8 ohms, punchy, smooth and tight bass. Nice. This is pretty damn rare, I've seen one other on fleabay and that's it. Price reflects rarity and condition (which is pretty damn good for a 14/15yr old cab!) EDIT: comes with 2 spare Celestion BG60 drivers (custom made for this cab) 1518 - SOLD As I've said on here, this is the best Trace 1x15 I've ever played through. 500W, 8 ohms. It's tighter, deeper and rounder in tone than the old 1518. And it's much lighter - I can carry this in one hand (though that is difficult coz it's a biggie!) Comes with the Trace embroidered cover. I traded this for my old V-Type combo with Tinman, he can give you more low-down if he so wishes! I've gigged this precisely twice and I think Tinman only used it a few times. It's in fine condition, a few marks here and there but nothing more than that. Priced to sell (hopefully). (Beautifully demonstrated by BC's very own Mr Truscott. He doesn't come with the cab I'm afraid. Nor does the Hartke or the Status
Sounds like a fine plan, I'll get the kettle on! What I rekon we should do is, when this ones finished, you look after it for a few months and tell me what you like and what you want changed for your one.
Sounds like a fine plan
Mertons a little bit busy right now () so heres a pic to keep the thread going...
Nice one Mikey! Can't wait to get my mitts on either this proto or my one1 Thinking I might bring the famerlee up in Octoer half term and do the tourist thing never did whilst at university. Plus, of course, I'll need to drop in and play the bass etc...

Merton replied to overwater#1's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
Like I say, I hate to have to put this up for sale, but needs must unfortunately!! Sorry Merton!! I'd love to keep hold of it, hope you can see my reasons.
So you should be 2 valves in the preamp, solid state power amp (I think it's the Bipolar Bear board but can't remember). Cracking combo, just VERY heavy! -
very nice! So is the covering painted blue too?
Not yet.... but i suppose I could...

Fabric weave grille looked sh*t, so I painted the speaker baffle. Colour courtesy of my 5 year old step-daughter Sophie: Shoulda painted the baffle before I did all the covering of course, but that ruins the fun
