Why not stick a CD/MP3 player through your amp/cab... failing that sit and noodle away or book in some rehearsal time. I don't think it's such an issue these days to break a speaker in, though the tone will change a bit as it settles, so I'd just play it

I asked Jorg Shroeder the same thing when my new cab arrived, as I had a gig that night. He said 'Just play it'.
Fair play - noodling option is always good:)
I believe some of the Design Programs have tone generators on them, so just take a line from your PC too your amp then through your speaker. Im sure google will throw up a few results for online tone generators also Edit, Here we are
Good point. I could just use Audacity's tone generator! Maybe's I'll just not bother. I didn't bother with my 4x8 combo when i replaced the speakers and that is fine. Just that this cab is to match my 1x15 combo exactly so if i have a more "broken in" speaker it'll be closer to begin with
Yep woodstock still happens, got rained on this year though. Took part in the battle of the bands though got to the final, which i heard was rare for a first year band. Theres some vids on the ystv website, the band is girl of prey...the vid kinda explains why we didn't get any place (lead singer likes to rant is all i'm saying!).
I think in my 4 years there it didn't rain once, must've been very lucky!! Will go check out the BoB videos - nice one for getting to the final! I only entered in my 2nd 3rd and 4th years - semi final, runner up, third place. When we were runner up we lost on a technicality of the whole band being the main people on the BoB committee so it would've looked mighty odd had we won... Is it still held in Langwith or have they sorted somewhere better for it?

I have a new 15" driver for a bass cab I'm building and I would like to break the speaker in properly before loading it in. However, I have no signal generator or anything particularly sensible like that. What suggestions do you fine folk have for easy speaker break-in methods?
Yeh, we've had this point before. I think we're talking about academic study of music theory, rather than what you have gleaned from playing your instrument.
We have indeed! I'm tired after a day at work and my brain forgot! Ho hum. There was a point I was trying to get to but I'm f**ked if I can remember it now!!
I am in no way denying that there are benefits to knowing music theory (communication between musicians, creating commercial music etc) but I really do not see any benefit to composing that this knowledge can bring.
Even if one didn't know "classical" music theory, when composing he/she would know what sounds a two-frets-up, one-string-up position change would make. In its very basic form, that is utilising their level of music theory to construct a shift of a perfect 5th for their composition.

Awful! How long before Warwick put a stop to Russtone making this (as they did with Status)???
I was trying to be a smart arse. My limited understanding of suspended chords is that they're chords over which you shouldn't play the 3rd. If you think (from memory) that both the minor and major 3rds sounded crap, then it sounds like you were right and maybe theory would have some kind of explanation to back you up.
Furry muff I see where you're coming from, just didn't spot it before!!
I think that's what Alex was saying as well. I know he has a certain way of expressing himself once you rub him up the wrong way (as do I), but he's generally a live and let live type of guy.
Yip
A suspended chord?
To be honest the example I gave was 3 years ago and I'm buggered if I can remember the ins and outs of the rest of the harmony in the song. This particular riff occurred in the outro where (IMHO) a more simple root note pattern would've driven the song forward a lot better without any harmonic mess incurred by maj/min 3rds, suspensions or anything else.
The 3rd what?
The third coming of Godzilla
Sheesh. Why do these discussions always turn into a "you have no soul" v. "you have no brain" clash of un-civilizations? I think most people here are of the opinion that whatever works for you is the right way. In my band, we have two self-taught guys (me and the guitarist) and two schooled-from-a-young-age classically-and-jazz-trained guys (keyboard player and drummer). Being in this band has challenged a lot of our preconceptions: schooled guys can have the best feel and groove and most soulful playing in town, and self-taught guys can know what they're talking about when it comes to harmony and rhythm. The guitarist and I both taught ourselves bits of theory along the way and are still absorbing new bits every day. The difference between us and the other two is that they learnt it from a teacher whereas we had to go find it from other musicians/books/articles/websites.
I think that's the point a few of us are trying to get across, some more eloquently (you) than others (me) and some are perhaps misunderstanding each other!
You could consider he was playing the tri-tone of the relative minor.
But it still sounded crap Like I said, both the major and minor thirds sounded crap at that point so ultimately his lack of knowledge vs that of the rest of the band both would have come up with solutions which sounded crap. My solution would've been to avoid the 3rd of any colour/description/type all together. And it may still have sounded crap!
I'm sorry, if he can't hear that it sounds "wrong" then he's f***ed and will only be an instrument operator, not a musician. Theory in this case may help him be a better operator.
hehe, good point!
-
If you don't know any theory whatsoever, then you have to have a f***ing fantastic ear and not put yourself in situtations where you have to communicate with other musicians through words. Learning theory can help develop your ear and your rhythmic understanding. It can also help you to understand why some things you do sound good and others sound less good.
Well said. Back to my example of the friend who knows no theory, he struggled to explain things to the rest of his band who all knew their theory, they understood each other perfectly and he just didn't get it.
-
I have a friend who is adamant he doesn't need music theory, to the extent he was riffing under a G major chord with B flats all over the shop. It sounded "dark" to him. It sounded wrong to everyone else!! He wouldn't listen to the guys in his band so they asked me to tell him after a soundcheck once. Sure enough from that night on he switched to B naturals. The music didn't clash anymore but it still didn't sound right either - I think ideally the 3rd shouldn't have been in his riff at all under the music the guitarists were playing. Make of that what you will in the theory/no theory debate...

Currently shopping for a cab/s for my eden WT800 thus how i found this place. Anyway yeh thats me... any questions feel free to ask!
Hi Callum!
Most valve amps get very unhappy if they have nothing plugged into their speaker output. I'd look at plugging the speaker output of the Hartke into the speaker of the combo - you might have to solder up a jack plug to that speaker yourself to do it. Not exactly remotely difficult though!

I believe thats only Fully tubed heads, a tube pre should be fine with no load, so you dont need to worry about that.
Yup. Tube POWER amps need to see a load. In theory most solid state power amps should be OK open circuit, but as ferret said, RTM just to be sure.
I just play what I feel, and if it's wrong I don't do it again.
Ah. I DO do it again, so it doesn't notice as much - once is wrong, twice is jazz! I really want to improve my theory and have recently bought a book of Bach pieces transcribed for bass ot start me on th epath of doing just that. Hopefully it'll help
and it's a great rule, and easy to follow, although for some reason we all get obssesed by the numbers.
a big plus 1.
4 completely wicked riffs entered my head within seconds of reading this post. Operation Mindcrime was one of the first metal albums I purchased. I like to think I started in style.
Stonking album, I think I always think of the big pounding root notes in the intro to the 2nd verso fo "I Don't Believe in Love". Yeah!
I was going to start my own fashion label to rival that of FCUK. But what I'll do is get some decent looking apparel printed up with my logo. CNUT (after our esteemed King of course). The logotype comprises that name and a graphic of a wave coming to shore and a throne. The shore is that of a red tide with loads of dead logos all over the beach. Reckon there's a market?
I got my mate a t-shirt printed saying FCUKING CNUT, coz I'm very mature I want a Status hoodie!
FWIW, I don't think there's a "right" or "proper" way to play. Whatever suits you and gives you the sound you want and lets you best play the music you like is the best technique for you.
Agreed I can't slap for toffee either. I think if my life depended on it I'd be 6 feet under!

No GAS this week, I've actually clearly been feverish as I've been thinking (highly illogically) about what else I can SELL. Somebody shoot me now before something else ends up on the for sale forum.
