South East Bass Bash, Saturday 27th September: NEW INFO!
Merton replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Events
Just confirmed the small details with the Holiday Inn. This is in the Clandon Suites 1 & 2, which are next to each other with a partition/door between. There is of course a bar for drinks -
See now I have this belief that there's a lot of bassists missing out on what a really good 15" can do on its own. People equate 'punch' with 10" speakers probably because most of the 15"s they hear are the terrible ones in cheap combos. I shall bring a couple of my cabs to the SE Bass Bash and see if I'm not alone in my enjoyment of that big speaker goodness. Alex
My TE 1x15 V-Type combo has a hell of a lot of punch, but that's probably due to the Eminince driver being in an almost perfectly tuned tiny cabinet for it. Apparently. According to the Eminence specs and Win ISD. Not so sure myself but it sounds good

South East Bass Bash, Saturday 27th September: NEW INFO!
Merton replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Events
Er, I'll be there I'll bring my Status Retroactive Bass and my TE V-Type 8x8 rig -
I like passive and active basses, no preference really. And I like hybrid amps. I am therefore the greyist fence-sitter ever
Anyone have experience with the head in the auction?worth 100 quid? better than ashdown mag 300 or hartke ha4000, which are also going for 100 quid!too many options!
My personal choice would be the Trace head of those three, Hartke 2nd and Ashdown 3rd. They're all damn good prices though (Ashdown less so coz they're pretty cheap brand new now I think??)

Well this could take a while. Mikey's b*stard neighbours have complained about the noise and banned him from doing ANY work on it because it's a residential area! Bloody retired lawyer neighbour assholes Hopefully something will sort itself out, I know Mikey is just as gutted as me, if not more so coz it's his baby.

There's a thread on Talkbass where someone is building one at the mo: HERE
Would you consider lighter if you had to replace your cabs though? Im all for having tone over anything else but i dont see why a light cab cant sound great (and of course they do). I do understand that some people have cabs that they have used for years and i totally understand them not wanting to change but when it comes to having to then do they look for a lighter version?
Yeas, if I had to replace anything (cab/combo) I'd absolutely go lighter, I just don't need to yet! And with all the GAS I've had and amp swapping over th elast couple of years I feel that the next change should be out of necessity rather than GAS for a Markbass F1 or GB Shuttle 6 or the fabled Eden WTX-500.......

*SOLD* Trace Elliott V-Type preamp/Trace PPA300 power amp *SOLD*
Merton replied to Gwilym's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
for sale: Trace Elliott V-Type preamp/Trace Elliott PPA300 power amp. I "won" this pre/power combination on ebay a couple of years back, after I got a bit of GAS from listening to the sound clips of the V-Type pre on Basstasters. Anyhow, i haven't used it since I bought it other than the occasional use at home, so I guess I should let it go! The previous owner used both extensively (from new i think), and so cosmetically they are not perfect, but sound very nice. I will get pictures up as soon as, probably on the weekend now. I've got some £225 invested in this - I'd like £200 firm, and no trades thanks, got some stuff potentially incoming already, hence freeing up a bit of cash to help soften the blow cash on collection please - and given that I've not used this gear a great deal, and never pushed it, I'll offer a money back guarantee if there are any problems with it - the catch is you'll have to collect/return in West London (btw, can't get on here during work hours, so don't expect a quick reply during the day)
Bargain and a damn fine warranty offer! Would you be prepared to split? -
I'm on Bilbo's wavelength: My 1x15 combo is about 30kg, my 4x8 is about 42kg now it's got new (heavier!!) speakers and wheels. It's a bugger to lift into the car, but that's the only time I lift it other than to put it on its extension cab and as soon as it's on and making noise I forget about the weight. The extension cabs are both somewherre around the 20-25kg mark I think. I absolutely adore the sounds my current rigs make and couldn't part with them just to find something lighter. Ask me a gain in 10yrs and my attitude may have changed of course
ok ok ok...even tho (several years ago) I did my physics A-level I still have a nightmare getting my head around this whole wattage/ohms thing! Broken down: Low ohms = more watts get through = louder. I get that bit, maybe not the why or how, but I get that it happens. Now, the big question...I've got a Hartke HA5500 (so that's max output 500w@4ohms but it's currently running 250w@8ohms) and I've got a VX215 cab thats rated upto 500w@4ohms. So, they're matched, it should all work OK but on the speaker outputs on my head it's saying '8ohms'. Does anyone know how I can get the full 500w@4ohms? Will I need to send it back to the factory, or is there a secret switch I need to flick? Any Ideas?
EDIT: what OBBM said
-
I might be very wrong here but I don't think the cabs are genuine Trace.... Yes he says they've bene refinished but they don't look like 80s, 90s or modern TE cabs at all, the slot port is all wrong....??

Who's up for another South East Bass Bash?
Merton replied to silverfoxnik's topic in General Discussion
Cheers Nik, sounds good. I'll ask Phil Mulford if he's free and interested in a masterclass thing if you want? -
Status...... every time.....
Yes, wholeheartedly agree. I should've put that in my previous post really
What's the deal with the fanned frets? Are they weird to play?
The idea is they follow your natural hand position a bit better as well as allowing more even tension across the strings thanks to the multi scale. That said, I've never played one so I could be talking out of my @rse

Can yours fix torn drivers? We haven't figured out how to do that yet...
I have done lots of cabs with the Aldcrofts Paint and baby each and every one of them beyond words....I only have a tiny Wedgehorn done in the Aldcrofts now, its not so much impact damage, just that it rubs easily and scrapes against other things in the van / car. I would give the carpet another go following the tutorial. If you want to try and sell them they need to look Pro. Paint looks great for while but then starts to look worn very quickly. Just an amp moved about ontop of the cab will start to mark it very quickly. Its nothing like as good as the sprayed on stuff used by the pro cab manufacturers. It also does not take to car body filler well (bondo), I called in to see Julie at Aldcrofts who suggested to me to try coating the filler with some PVA first. I have not tried it yet, but it could be worth while trying that out. Dave
Our function bad PA is black paint and we have a special PA repair kit at all gigs coz they get knocked and scraped all the time. The kit? A black felt marker pen
and whats with all the def leopard jokes i love def leopard being a sheffield boy my self... one is not amused!!!
Yeah, me too. <sniff> Well, I'm not a Sheffield boy but I'm probably the only Def Lep fan left in existance other than my mate Ben The irony is that Rick Allen lost his arm TWICE. They sewed it back on but it became infected so had to take it off again. Poor bugger. If I lost my right arm I'd cry and then do what that famous one armed bassist does. If I lost my left arm I'd cry, then try to learn left handed and do what that famous one armed bassist does.

Pete, excellent job! Love it
Fair enough mate, have you tried the Labs stuff, in particular the Mark King head? Sounds like itd be more your bag if you like the old Trace gear, 12 band graphic very hi fi. After all Ashdown is owned by the guy who made trace great in the 80's anyway. To me I cant put my finger on it but the new Trace stuff is just missing something in its sound, not really anything like the good old stuff.
I've used the original Labs cabs (hehe, I'm a poet and i know it!!) and same thoughts apply but not used the MK sig head. In all honesty at the mo I don't care coz I'm very happy with my V-Type Trace stuff but if I ever go buying new gear it'll be of the lightweight variety so I'm more interested in the Little Giant heads vs Shuttles, Markbass etc... I think if I ever get a Trace 12-Band again it'll be a Series 6 or SMX range, nothing else!

Yummy! One of the ones without compression? If so the best GP7 head they did along with the Series 6 IMHO. Enjoy
