what did you get in the end?
Lol, fair play my furry little friend, just said what I thought, didnt say they were bad! After all variety is the spice of life. Hates a strong word by the way, so whats with the Ashdown 'hating' then out of interest? Seems a tad severe!
I guess hate is a bit strong, but apart from a MAG410T cab I used to have (running a Trace 12-band head through it) I have never liked the sound I've gotten out of any Ashdown gear, no matter what I've done with EQ, positioning etc etc. To be honest regarding the Marshall I've heard 50% good and bad reports about them, probably the same as you'd get with most gear as it's all very subjective.... If I were buying a new combo I'd probably aim at a Markbass or new TE range but what I like and everyone else is different
Im buying a f'king guitar.
Just make sure you use a 2x12 vertically aligned
I wish you wouldn't bait Mr. Fitzmaurice, because his posts are always worth a read. In your case a little (or should that be no?) knowledge is a dangerous thing.
plus the 1
They are ok for what they are, but very heavy and the sound isnt really that great to my ear. In my opinion youd be better off looking at the Ashdown MAG or ABM range. Hope this helps!
In your opinion and for the sound you're after I personally hate Ashdown amps so wouldn't recommend them, it's very subjective. I'm pretty sure there's someone on here with either that marshall combo or a head/cab set up similar and he loves it.
+1 I had a similar tingling fingers problem a couple of years ago. It turned out to be a lower back problem.
+2. I had CT type symptoms, turned out to be my left shoulder.
18V of Active goodiness every time!!!!
Yup Unless I'm playing my Grooves, in which case it's 9V. And my new bass (see build diary) is gonna be passive. Erm. That makes my arsenal a bit of a mixed bag.
But surely your 8x8 can't sound good as it suffers from comb filtering issues?? Or is that my point; these things can sound good in spite of the science?
And to a degree that's my point too. They CAN sound good in spite of the science but all Bill, Alex and bassferret are giving is the science. Bill is not stating opinion as fact, he's stating fact as fact. He doens't disagree that things may sound good to certain people's ears but that the general design is flawed for best response.
I tried to make the point in my last post that there’s a lot of subjectivity when it comes down to “what sounds best”, but either way I don’t think that anyone can reasonably deny or talk down the scientifically proven methods for efficient and effective cab design. Anyone that does is just a bit of an idiot and obviously lacking in any technical understanding of the mechanics of enclosure design.
Well said
-
Chris, I think you're missing Bill's points. He is merely stating as scientific fact (er, coz it IS!) that traditional cab designs are flawed. He doens't say you shouldn't use them, he just says they MAY cause problems which better designed systems do not experience. End of. Yes, everyone is entitled to their own opinion of what sounds good but Bill is merely pointing out the potential problems which could befall you. I used to run a 2x10 and 1x15 rig and in comparison to my 2x15 or 8x8 rigs I now use it sounded bollox. I've taken Bill's advise onboard, tried it out and discovered that it really does work
Oh dear, am I still in the wrong place? If so, can you help?
You've put it in the right place before, can't se ehow it's hard finding hte FOR SALE - Amps and Cabs" section! It's here! BUT, since you've already got a thread in there, please just bump that rather than sticking another thread up! EDIT: you have 2 threads there already: ORIGINAL SECOND
There are some interesting videos of Gary Willis showing his more advanced version where he actually uses unused fingers to further damp strings he's moving away from. Scary!
I think I sometimes do that sort of thing totally subconciously. Must check out how he does it...
Thanks for that folks. All I'd like to know now is how my post ended up HERE (my previous moan refers)! Is there someone out there who is able to move other people's posts (Oooer!)
Yes. You originally posted in the wrong part of the forum so a Mod moved it to the correct place I guess. Nothing spooky or sinister, just keeps th eplace tidy so people can find things in the logical place

Mmm, I love black basses, this will look grand with the maple neck

Here's Mikey's mock-up drawing of the bass (note the 2+3 headstock, we like this!): And here is a "layout" pic: Electronics are simply 1 volume control plus a 4-way switch for pickup options: bridge, both in series, both in parallel, neck
Went to see Merton's band 'Back In The Day' at The Crow's Nest in East Grinstead last night. Great band and the bass & drums were fabulous! Despite Merton's protests, he's a great player who knows how to use his gear to the max.. Cheers Mert; had a great night! Nik
Cheers Nik, excellent to see you and thanks for the kind words Hope the TV does the job, will dig out the remote asap.
Not sure what Merton was trying to say to me at this point, but I don't think it was "See, my right-hand technique really is improving"
But it is........
(and the prize for the most original thread title goes to...) i hope these basses dont dissapoint, theyre not all that inovative, all pretty standard features. ive just never seen them put together in this combination. shape wise, its a collection of ideas we've been chatting about for the past 9 years or so and finally getting round to building it. funny that someone should mention status, a coleague of mine said it looks a little like a single cut status. anyhoo, Mertons thread so i'll let him fill you in.
One string with an oval body then. That's a pretty odd number of strings and number of cutaways. And it would be even odder to have fanned frets on a one-string bass.

lol! that made me laugh.
Me too Might get a pic of the body shape up this weekend if I can find where I put it.....

The Status Jonas Hellborg sig bass was far nicer than that but the Warwick ain't anywhere near the fugliest bass I've seen
This next bit would be better off in the build diaries thread.
Indeedy! But hats off to you (XTOFMARY) for really pushing on with this and to Robbie for being the man to do it - having played a couple of his basses you're in good hands! Will be an interesting build
