So the question is "Should I mod the cab to make it 2 x 8-ohms" and then try and sell it?
I suspect that may make it easier to shift (well, sell, not easier to move, for that you need to sell a couple of roadies too) unless someone once bought the AH1000-12 and forgot to get the matching cab..!

Er, exactly what Alex has just said!!
ah ok. seems like a bit of a waste getting the neo speakers if the amp can only go up to 450W, unless i can find a good used deal. anyway i read on the wiki that if you use very powerful speakers with a not very powerful head, you can damadge the speakers. and if you use the rig at really low volumes for long periods, the speakers will also break cos they require movement to cool down, and at low volumes they arnt moving hardly.
Stop getting so hung up on the power ratings! Damage occurs just as bass_fereet says - if you hear unwanted distortion, THAT's when you have a problem. Simply using cabs with a higher thermal rating does f**k all. My Trace 8x8 rig is a power section of 280W RMS, the internal combo speakers are rated 600W overall, the extension cab a further 240W. I wouldn't be using that set up if there a danger in doing so!
IMPORTANT NOTE: it is quite possible to damage high powered speakers by driving them with a lower powered amplifier that is being driven at full volume. Although this seems counter-intuitive the physics of sound make this possible. For this reason, you should avoid driving your amplifier at full volume to the point where is starts to distort badly (some mild “musical” distortion is acceptable). If you cannot get enough clean volume from your amplifier you need a more powerful amplifier. thats what it says in the wiki, thats where i read it from
Yeah, but just the fact you're using and amp which is less powerful isn't the problem. The problem is if you overdrive the amp, you *may* cause damage. If it sounds bad, turn down.
good point, well presented
Ta!
i've read somewhere that using a powerful cab with a not so powerful head can damage the cab. will this be a problem with that speaker, cos it will be like 1200W at 4ohms, and the amp will only be putting out 450W at 4ohms
Complete bollocks. If you hear unwanted distortion, turn down. Other than that, read the wiki!!

Not sure on the full ins and outs of the GK system but biamping essentially splits the low and high frequency bands so separate amps (and hence speaker systems) reproduce smaller frequency bands which they are more suited to.
-
Um. ? Nothing else will take advantage of the head's ability to biamp.
Wot 'e said! Still confused why you're convinced two 2x10 cabs or similar won't be "loud" enough coz if you get the right ones you won't have a problem, lots of people have been telling you that on your other thread. But like Kiwi says, if youwanna bi-amp, you need a GK cab like that!

Lovely! I prefer the pearloid scratchplate too Any news on your other little project?!

Nice one Jamie
I swear I read somewhere he was 15 and his folks were paying for this. Maybe in the previous thread - the one about Marshall v Ashdown?
I read that too, you're not going mad. Or we both are. Anyhoo, to the OP: All I can add to the debate is you're asking lots of people's opinions who have decades of experience between them and then you're ignoring or completely misinterpreting it. It really would be a shame to buy the Hartke just coz of the specs, then go and hear another rig somewhere which is a better sound for you which you could have bought but now you can't coz you have zero money and a rig worth half what you paid new. 2nd hand is really really really your friend. All my amplification, even now when I could quite happily by new, is 2nd hand and is all fantastic. No-one else knows, or gives a sh*t where it came from or how much it cost or what the specs are, they just like it coz it sounds good.
oh i've just realised. if i get the LH1000 head, thats 1000W at 4ohms. The 4x10 speaker is 1000W at 8ohms. if i only have one attached, could this be bad? i'd probably only be getting about 500W to the amp right? it wouldnt overheat the head or cab or anything would it? thanks
read the wiki and the stickies!
Mert - I'm looking forward to hearing more about the cab story Hopefully, it all went well? Nik
Almost scuppered when the dude called me whilst I was with Nic. "Who was that? What are you arranging tomorrow - I thought you were doing band stuff?" Oh crap. "Er, yeah. Chris is a guy I met at the bassbash, he lives near Cengiz in Richmond (editor's note: well, Tottenham is close on a galactic scale) and I'm going to pop round to his quickly after the band stuff. He's off to live in America you see, and he has very similar amp set up to me but I want to play on his nice P bass which he didn't take to the bash." "Oh I see. Why the f*8k does he want to live in America?" And as for the Sunday itself, well the snow almost ruined everything when a. Sophie wanted to throw snowballs at me all day and b. I couldn't get off Nic's driveway because of it being a steep slope towards the house. That was hairy. Then Chris told me the wrong house number so i was hammering on an empty house for half an hour before he came to find me. Fun fun. The cab is bloody great tho Oh, there are pics of the Crow's Nest gig on facebook btw

anyone ever go back to wood from graphite?
Mine has a factory fitted Status MM neck as it was an end of production one and they'd run out of standard necks - I think mine is one of only 2 like this. Mine is natural alder and the other was all black. It's a lovely bass and as close to a Modulus Flea as I'll ever get, especially for £700 inc hiscox LiteFlite. I also like the fact it's made in England and I've spoken to the man who made it. I'd always liked Grooves except for the droopy headstock - and mine doesn't have that!
I have the last "real" Groove with wooden neck. Rob made it out of bits they found lying around about 2yrs after final production, then didn't really try to sell it. I saw it when I went up with a mate to pick up his new S1. Then he obviously found 2 more bodies and stuck graphite necks on them, man was I tempted by the black one a few years back.... Anyhoo, back on subject, if you already have a wooden encked jazz, don't bother doing anything to the Status-necked one! -
Buy some ER-20 musicians' earplugs whilst you're still young enough to save your hearing! Without buying a bass rig the size of a small car you will never win the volume war. Instead, turn it into a dialogue where you all listen to each other and thus the guitarists learn that the volume knob turns in both directions. Play with each other, don't fight to be heard. If I was in your position I'd track down a used Peavey head and a couple of used cabs (2x10", 1x15" or a mix of the two). Or a single 4x10" (add casters if they're missing) and work on your lifting technique (visits to gym may help...) Peavey gear is really reliable and when you've been playing some years and really know what your ideal rig is (which will only come with time and experience) you'll be able to sell it for what you paid in the first place. If you really do want to spend £500 on a cab, which strikes me as a hell of a lot for a newbie, then check out the DR Bass cabs that Robbie @ RIM Custom is importing, I doubt you can do better. Alex
+1 to all of that. Listen to Alex, he speaketh sense

More often than not I use a 1x15 combo on its own against two Marshall Mode 4 stacks. That is doing about 180W. Just becasue your guitarists are using stacks doesn't mean you have to. What about the Eden Nemesis speaker cabs? Those cabs are pretty light and they're the cheaper Eden range. Re. jack-jack cables, do not use a standard guitar lead as a speaker cable. Bad idea (no doubt explained in the wiki). Get Dave (OBBM around these parts) to make you some nice jack-jack speaker cables.

Haven't cranked it yet, but i think the neighbours may complain when I do. That's be tomorrow night
If it had been this weekend I'd have never made it to Jct 8 to meet you, I couldn't get my car out of Nic's driveway!
Loving the trace merton! And if you're ever down this way gimme a shout and you can come try 'em

Nik, good to see you again yesterday and nice playing! I thought the bass sounded grand and no matter what you kept saying about being rusty, Ben and I were saying on the way back that seeing you in full swing must be something special Oh, and I think I have a plan for the cab story should I ever need it...

Well, I got the 4x8 cab - thanx again to John for the pointer So, the full monstrosity: I'll more than likely use these two configs tho: 8x8, hooray! It sounds amazing This one sounds hooooooooge
lol I must admit they do feel kinda... ...its wierd how to explain, I can only substitue and say they feel "plastic-like" against the usual crunch you get with any new string(s) but I believe Mertons right & Ive never bought roto's online I guess I have to give them more chance But first, I've gotta get thru 7 packs of Elites strings, what a score from ebay for £50
Hah! See, I don't like Elites... but I can see why that's a bloody good deal. Similar to my 5 sets of TE strings for £35...
