1. How long is a piece of string? What style of music do you play? What sort of sound are you after? Gig sizes? Probably discount the Laney based on what I've heard about them but it might be right for you! Just remember, the opinions you get here are probably biased towards what we all like and your opinion may be different!! (I personally wouldn't have any of them, I'd try to track down a Trace or an Eden Nemesis combo 2nd hand instead) If you can, go try them all...
2. Had some interest in these, both have "first calls" on them
3.
MB1. Ive seen these cases !.....you havent got a cat in hells chance of getting a markbass 210P in one!
Haha! I just got one of the foam-lined cases actually, grand little box it is too :-)
4. As it says really. Big Muff It's in pretty rubbish cosmetic condition becuase I lent it to our g**tarist and he threw it around in his gig bag for 6 months but it works fine. Comes in the stupid wooden box with the mains adaptor (a tenner separately!) sold pending payment Unibass Less than a year old, bought for £75, perfect condition coz the g**tarist hasn't got his grubby mitts on it. Can't post this til the weekend tho. sold pending payment EDIT: I'm a dick and put this in the wrong place coz I wasn't concentrating, sorry! Can a lovely mod move it please? Pretty please? Thank you!
5. Just to add another +1 to the "Status are cool" band, love mine to bits
6.
Ok forgive me if this is a silly question, I was never any good at this sort of stuff. I have two combos, an Ashdown Mag 300 4x 10, and a Trace Elliot 7215 SMC 1 x 15, which was originally intended to replace the Ashdown. However since I still have both here to hand, I have hatched the plan of hooking them up together to give me some more wallop onstage. Both are 300 watt (although I'm told the Trace only produces 200 through the onboard speaker and 300 when a cab is used, although there's no mention of that in the manual) and both take a minimum 4 ohm cab. Can I do this, how exactly, and is there any disadvantage other than the obvious weight/size issues? Thanks.
Both the Ashdwon and the Trace will be ~200W into the 8ohm internal speakers, 300W into a 4ohm load. So to ge tthem both operating at 300W you'd need two extention cabs anyway. However, using them both at 8ohms will already be increasing your air movement so will certainly help! To link 'em together, take the line out from one and stick it into the input of the other. Or split the signal before the amps... Have fun, should sound nice
7. If you don't buy it can you tell them I will?
8. Have fun and let us know how it goes! We're doing our first CPC next April I think, should be a giggle
9. Sod it, what I am going to do is sell the Trace head + flightcase. It can help pay a bit towards the electrics or shower. Then in the future when i need to, I can buy somehting else if I want. It'll be in for sale soon, once I have some piccies!
10. Mike that is stunning, well worth your agonising wait! I like the Shuker case too, the "S" looks remarkably similar to the Status "S" to my (very bad) eyes. But back to the bass. Wow. Hope it gigs well tonight
11.
Glad you got everything sorted
Cheers. Here's hoping my crap soldering skills hold up now!! Can't wait to try it properly in a rehearsal room to make sure the F# woof was caused by my environment at the time, or else I'll be having to do some maths to change the port sizes
12. Despite being interested I'm gonna pull out of the running, I've come to my senses and realised my flat and its dodgy wiring is more important at the mo! Someone else grab a bargain; Wil, put some castors on it and you're laughing all the way to tonal heaven
13. Thanks people! I think I slept on it funny on Wednesday night so had this crazy idea, I woke up today being less convinced it's a good idea. Flat electrics it is
14. For some reason this week I've decided I don't like my Trace 12-band head as much as I used to (especially compared to the V-Type combo) so I'm pondering swapping it out for one of these: Jamie's other V-Type combo (4x8" speaker config) A brand new GK 700RBIII (£435) A brand new Eden Nemesis 320W head (£280) I was considering ~£400 for all of the following: the head (well, obviously) the 5-way footswitch a custom made flight case (£170 last year) Am I going mad? Can somoene slap me and tell me to worry about buying my flat next week and the electricity problems there? The combo would be awesome but space might be an issue so that's why the two heads are in the mix too. Or should I do it?
15. Nah, tell your band members to grow a backbone and help you move it to the gig! It has wheels!
16. They're not that heavy Wil!! My combo is 250W but I think this one has a 300W MOSFET power stage.
17.
MB1. £1.00..........You beginning to see the problem?
That's exactly what I offered him
18. This would all hinge on me making a definite decision to flog my 12-band head, then actually flogging it, as all my other money is tied up in a house buy at the mo.. er, I'll PM you...
19.
I traded this with Wildus a lil while back and if you see my post for my DJ4, you will see the only reason I am offloading is I am pretty much giving up playing. This is a pretty rare beast. 4x8 combo with valve preamp, 3 band rotary eq, deep and bright switches, gain and DI. I asked Trace for more info on it and they couldn't really help so I do not know much about the amp. It's incredibly punchy sounding and has a very individual sound. Cash offers or trade offers for good guitar gear - 6 strings or valve amps (preferably combo).
How much do you want? I love my 1x15 version of this to bits and am seriously considering swapping my 12-band head for something else, having the bro of what I already have but with a different speaker combo would be awesome
20. Totally failed to try your suggestion Bill because I was too eager just to try the Eminence drivers instead!! That said, they seem to have cured the rattle rather nicely and I think sound a little "warmer" and less brittle than the Celestions. One thing I was slightly concerned with is a very prominent resonance at F# and (to a lesser extent) B, but I think that was mainly the garage I was in coz when I moved the cab indoors I didn't get the same woofiness. Not sure as I didn't turn it up as loud in the house coz the fish looked scared... Will give it a go in rehearsal next week and see I plugged the new config into WinISD with the current port sizes and it looks OK, -3dB is around 58Hz (but we've discussed cab sizes at length several times....) but vent velocity is nice and low (in the green, hooray!) and generally the frequency response looks nice and smooth. Since I've not used WinISD before I then plugged in the parameters of my homemade cab. Oh deary dear dear. No wonder it sounds sh*te. Think I might take the driver out, destroy the cab and build a new one which will suit it better. Anyhoo, thanks everyone for your help!
21.
Usually that's a piece of schmutz that's got itself wedged between the cone and frame. When you initially hit the note the cone hits the junk, but as the note fades and excursion diminishes it no longer hits and the rattling stops. You can usually find the source quite easily by taking the driver out of the cab and running a low level signal through it.
Didn't spot anything but I'll try this tonight! Cheers
22.
theres also the gamma 10 which has a wider frequency, if thats any good though i know not. its also in a 16ohm. wonder wether they are better than what comes in the ashdown mag stuff and wether they would change the tone alot? merton i would have thought if the coils were having problems then you would hear a scratching noise from the driver when you move the cone, maybe you need to move the cone more than you are to reach the problem point.
Yeah, looked at the Gamma too, but to be honest the performance differences are minimal and I'm not one blessed with a subtle ear. Gone for the last two Betas in stock at Blue Aran after a brief chat with two of their bods, will see if it makes a difference or not. If not then I'll have some spare drivers for sale PDQ...
