Sorry, another dumb question: would the Eminence Beta 10 be OK as a replacement? They seem to come in the required 16ohm config....
I think i know what the problem is, I has the exact same thinh happen when I bought my TE cab in from a garage where it had been for the winter. You will find that the voice coil on one or both of the drivers has corroded and is sticking, hence the noise being intermittent. The damp cold air gets to the coils if exposed long enough. I had my drivers replaced and the cab was fine after that. Take a look at www.bluearan.co.uk for replacement drivers.
Is this something I should be able to see? The drivers are out of the cab now and I can't see anything explicitly wrong, there are no nasty grating noises if you push on the cones gently; should I prod anywhere else?
Paul Herman is taking over the production of Wal's apparently, though he's got his work cut out upgrading Wals electronics to current safety standards and other work commitments.
That's good news, would be a shame to see Wal disappear completely. Plus Paul is probably the only man up to the job, let's face it!
I don't know if he is still there, but Paul Herman used to work with Charlie Chandler, at the shop in Hampton Wick. As an ex WAL worker he might be able to help. Failing that any good repair man should be able to fix the problem.
Paul certainly is still there, he did my Groove 5er a month or so ago

I know what you mean! Unfortunately it's not that, as my bass is fine through any other rig and I even turned the pre-amp to passive to check

OK, so my "big" rig (Trace AH300-12, Trace 2x10 and Trace 1x15) has been in storage recently while I sort out my house purchase, but I got it out yesterday for band practice. Well, the amp and 2x10 anyway. So I get to the rehearsal room early to set up and have a play but notice at any useable level (i.e. above about 1.5) there's a really nasty farty/rattly sound coming out. It lasts about 4 or 5 seconds or so before dying away (if playing a long note). The speaker grille isn't moving at all, and neither are the handles. So I'm gonna take it apart at lunch today to have a peer inside and play with the cones to see if there's anything obvious. What should I be looking/listening out for on the speakers? If it is a blown driver, any suggestions of good replacements (I'll swap 'em both out to keep em matched)? Cheers! Oh, and if this gets moved to Repairs then fair play, I couldn't decide which forum to put it in
I've had loads of goes. always messy and the solder comes off the base of pots etc .. Any clues? What sort of iron should I use? What's the best/easiest solder - type? make? sources -Maplins? Is there a book? Youtube instructions? Online tips and stuff?
I'm sure the wonderful chaps at Expert Village would be able to help... Nah, what everyone has said already makes sense. I'm still rubbish at it tho for some reason.
That pretty much sums it up I think. Perhaps a marmite brand ?

Each to his own, naturally, but I've never had an issue either with clarity/punch OR reliability.
Yep. I think it's great everyone has different tastes too, or the world would be boring. But you must remember, my tastes are correct, yours aren't
Played through a brand new borrowed Ashdown stack at a gig the other night and it was woolier than a sheep in a jumper shop. And we're not talking the cheap range either - this was an Evo head and top of the range cabs. It was awful. What's all the fuss about?
+1. I've only ever played through one Ashdown I liked, and that was my MAG 4x10 cab, one of the really early ones with black Celestion speakers and the "thin" design (rather than the later "Deep" cabs). To be fair though, I was always driving that with a Trace head which I love!! I did a gig earlier this year with an ABM 8x10 being driven by a Hartke 3500. I like the Hartke heads but it lost all its punch and clarity going through the 8x10, I was really disappointed. As for their heads, I hate 'em! But, each to their own and all, I can see why (a lot of) people would hate my sound and rig...

Any of my Statiis through either of my Trace rigs bring a grin to my face, but the absolute best is easily the Retroactive, via a Trace Dual Comp, into my V-Type combo. It's heaven
Okies, I have had the idea of restoring my Vester Stage Series (60's Jazz copy), had basically decided on bunging in a EMG JHZ pickup set and a Badass II bridge getting it cleaned up BUT whilst doing the sound for a band last night (a seven piece that like to swap around their instruments - was a challenge) I noticed the bassist was using a Fretless Squirer Jazz Custom thing and I kinda fell in love So, do I restore the Vester as planned (also bear in mind it's hardly in mint condition) or do I remove the scratchplate (not that keen on tortoiseshell effect anyway) and defret the thing? It doesn't really owe me anything (£40 from ebay) but I have grown to become very fond of it, am thinking that the money that I spend on the restore could easily go towards another bass (plus would sell my Washburn T14 to avoid 'too-many-basses-earache' from the missus) which would give me a budget of about £300 (which would prolly be spent on a minty dynabass and a 2x10) But also I feel like I kinda owe it to the Vester to restore it (being a bit of a sentimental old git) what to do?
I have exactly the same bass, and I too am very sentimental about it (but it was my first bass). I've got Schaller PUs in mine and that's the only upgrade I've done, it growls like a beast now. Removing the scratchplate will leave you a nasty surprise I expect, a la the Mexi Jazzes - the neck PU is in a big hole rather than a nice tight rout!
My Status the Groove bass 5 string mint cond. for 280£
Cracking basses these are, I love mine to bits!

As you can see we were all confuzzled about it too, oh joys! Lemme know I'll have a listen later, promise!

Hey Luke, At work at the mo so can't listen but will have a listen later! You guys still on for the Clapham Grand on Nov 2nd with us?? Mert EDIT: it might be the 16th actually, I've forgotten 2nd EDIT: damn singer got the date wrong, it's definitely the 16th!! Anyhoo, you guys still on for it?!

A bit like my soundcheck licks, I play the open strings. All at the same time. With a coin instead of a pick. Nah. I haven't been in a g**tar shop for AGES so I can't actually remember the last thing I played in one. Probably some bollox like Gods of War or one of me own lines.
Very underrated basses, these! I'm surprised there's been no replies or takers for this.. perhaps it's because it's not such a well known Status model? I had one for about 5 years and liked it a lot. Only sold it to fund buying my Wal. Good luck with the sale!
+1 if it's even half as good as my Groove! Good luck
A month later, and I've not touched my S2 apart from a quick noodle here and there. I do believe that a bass this fine deserves to be played every day, so I've decided that its now definately up for sale. I'm asking £1000, collected from Bristol. I paid £1550 for it, so that's £550 off the new price and its in as new condition, strung with Labella Deep Talkin' flats at the moment. I do believe I will be purchasing a G&L Asat semi hollow with the proceeds, as I'm going back to 4 strings with a drop tuner for the most part and enjoying a more traditional vibe! So, trades for a semi hollow Asat will be entertained, providing its the right colour and has a maple board...
Wil, you b*st*rd This was gonna be the blueprint (literally, given the colour!) for my next Status, and now you're selling this one just as I buy a house. Git! Good luck tho
LoL! I would think its something to do with RoHS but is it the same in the US?
It's where you sell the product which counts, not where it's built, and since most of the world is now taking up the RoHS directive it makes sense to make everything compliant. Plus it would be a bloody nightmare having a production line with a mix of RoHS and non-RoHs compliant builds... Some US states even have slightly more stringent requirements, as does China.
Blimey, that sucks. Which materials in the amp are supposed to be hazardous?
Good question, would be interesting to know! I know from my experience that it really depends on a lot of things; I suspect there's either one random component they buy which they can't replace with a suitable compliant component or they can't use the correct solder or something...
It certainly was, and he's [Mo Foster] another geezer well worth checking out fretlessly. His solo album 'Bel Assis' is superb. (As is his book '17 Watts?', it's a scream.)
Yes indeedy. Thoroughly bloody nice bloke too. He was genuinley interested in my views on fretless playing when I met him 2 or 3 years ago, and I'd only had a fretless for about 6 months.
Easiest way to get rid of it - eBay People will pay you to take away your junk!
Aye, I'm thinking about a starting bid of 99p to see where we get. No hurry tho, I may leave it until I've moved in and can actually get to them (they're stuck at the back of my storage room at the mo.....)
