YES Merton! Controversial! I'd like to hear other people's opinions re. mixing cabs. Is it common to do this? Pros, cons? Both current 2x10's are rated at same power & impedance. Merton, you haven't annoyed me,.. although you may have angered the little red GAS Devil sat on my left shoulder! I'm sure we can strike a deal in another area!...guess if i sold my soul i could complete Both rigs!
I used to run and Asdhown MAG 4x10 with the Trace 1x15 cab, it was immense. Never had a problem. As for the little farty Man U fan on your left shoulder, bah! Give in to the pressure and buy 2 more cabs and a Trace head, it's fun buying things!

At the risk of annoying you, why not keep the set up you have, as you have a nice mix of "bright" and "round"? I'd personally go with the Trace cabs coz I find Hartke cabs a bit harsh.
He added: "If I have anything to do with it there'll be a famous UK guitar brand after all."
Like Status or Sei or Shuker? Nah, good for you man, and tho I don't think I'll ever want more than 5 strings I can understand why you do. Enjoy the bass and the local spotlight
That's more to do with the taper on the volume pot, they're not always linear all the way from min to max. Most of the output volume from a Trace is available in appoximately the first half a turn, thereafter it makes less and less difference. I'm not familiar with the Eden but at least some of the volume difference you hear at what look to be the same positions could be explained by that.
Thought that may well be the reason!

Main amp thesedays is a 250W Trace V-Type combo, but since I normally only run it at 8ohms it's probably only developing about 100-125W, volume on about 4. When I plug an extension cab in it's the most monstrous beautiful sound ever, but I rarely need to do that. I have done gigs with my 100W Trace Elliot Commando combo but that really struggled to keep up, it's good for acoustic gigs tho. (edited for correcting crappy smelling pistakes and additional bits )

No idea. But I know I turn off the horn completely in my 2103H coz it's horrible, so I know why you're looking for one without it
When I had my mesa 400+ at full power, I was told that to get the same power out of a solid state rig you would need around 1600w So basicly tube amps are four times louder?
Careful with the use of "power" instead of "volume" or even "perceived volume" That's where a lot of people's confusion comes in I think. My old Trace head and current Nemesis head are both 300W (well, the Nemesis is 320W) but to get the same perceived volume, the Trace would be set on ~2-3 and the Nemesis on 5. I half wonder whether that's to do with input headroom (Trace had gain on about 9 with no clipping, Nemesis on 4 with a bit of soft clipping for the compressor), but that's another query for another thread...
I've seen a couple of posts here recently talking about how "loud" valve amps are. I was kind of under the impression if you had, say, a solid state amp and a valve amp both rated at 300 watts or whatever that they would both put out more or less the same volume as they had the same wattage? Am I completely wrong here? Thanks for any help and (hopefully ) the lack of flaming
Power output and volume are not linked exlcusively. Power output could be heat generated in the power amp, or generated in the speaker cables etc etc.... As Kiwi says, there's lots of other things which influence perceived volume level too, and several other peeps are better placed to explain them more clearly than me
Hi All, Ok guys so here's the latest bits done on Alex's bass, the nut is cut and the frets have had the slightest of dresses. I going to finish all the final sanding and then Foil the control cavity. Im hopefully going to be using a high quality teflon wire between the pots to give the bass the best signal, Ive been looking into turntable wire which has the best audio reproduction. Hope you guys like the update! Cheers, Robbie.
Lovely. I want one!!
In your opinion. MOSFET technology has produced many highly rated bass and PA amps.
+1 I have to say, I am rather partial to the FET preamps of the TE Commando amps and the Eden Nemesis amps, nice and simple just like me!!
Thanks for the comments, guys! Just ordered another Status as well, so that'll be arriving soon Merton, I was quite taken with the T-Bass, but it's really like a jazz with serious attitude! I've actually ordered a 4-string version of my recently sold KingBass. Will be same wood & electronics as my S2, just with bendwell & 32-inch scale. Also buying the "BassChat Status whore" in about a week... (The Energy Artist 5 with the added graphite neck that's been owned by almost everyone on this server!)
I guess my Retroactive is a J with serious attitood too I'd love a T bass aswell but reall yno need coz the Retroactivce is soooo lovely. As for the "BC Status Whore" bass, when you're done with it, gimme a shout...

Depends on the gig. Function band is: 2 basses in Hiscox cases or gig bags 1 combo 1 box with all leads and pedals 1 stand Originals band is (normally) 2 basses 1 amp head 1 or 2 cabs 1 box as above 1 stand
Picked up my new Status yesterday direct from Rob's workshop. Tried a streamliner & the new T-bass as well. Both excellent basses (as you'd expect!)
Well that's rather yummy, very nice! Do you have GAS for a T-Bass now? I quite fancy trying the Streamliner but I've bene told point blank if I buy one I'll be fired from the function band
That's precisely what I don't want... but I am failing miserably.
Swap ya?

Good shops: Electromusic in Doncaster, had many a pleasant trip there while at Uni in York (god, over 4 years ago now ) Er, that's it. Oh wait, Andertons in Guildford *can* be OK. It's hit and miss to be honest. Recently it's been hit, but in the past it's most definitely missed. I think there's one "other" high street shop which many could learn from: Richer Sounds. Never, ever, ever put a foot wrong with me, even if only buying some speaker cables. And that's the new Reigate one, Croydon, Leeds and Guildford all acoounted for. Cracking service.

I just want my flat to look like a bass store, so I currently have 4 plus a cheapo electro-acoustic. But there is a point to them all so I do now have little need for more: 1. Vester Jazz copy, my first bass so never being sold for sentimental reasons 2. Status Retroactive J, built for me and my main gigging bass 3. Status Groove 5, coz the low B is good 4. Status Groove fretless, coz it's fretless and lovely 5. Firewood. Oh, sorry, electro-acoustic cheapo, for messing around on at home Might want a P bass at some point. No, I DO want a P bass at some point. Just can't justify it yet
bought Mertons Trace Elliot head from him, very nice bloke to deal with, likes a good bleather and his packing skills are worthy of a gold star the amp even arrived a day early cant say better than that. cheers again dude
Cheers Rob, 'twas a pleasure (Just a shame I forgot the mains lead!!)

BTW, fuses normally blow when turning the amp on or off, not mid-gig (unless you are making the amp work REALLY hard)! It's like light bulbs, they normally die when you switch the light on coz that's the most likely moment of current spikes.
This may not even be a problem, but just thought I would ask. I switched on my Trace combo a few nights back and nowt happened. After a bit of fiddling about I discovered that the the fuse in the amp had blown. I fitted a replacement, which did the trick. My question is: do fuses sometimes blow for no apparent reason, or is it a sign of a potential fault? The replacement has not blown, but I'm just wary now and worried about the same happening mid gig or rehearsal. Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated. All the best Gary.
It'll probably be OK, I have several spare fuses ever since one blew once, and I've never ever used any of them! If the fuse keeps dying then, as LFalex says, it's a problem, but a one-off should just be a one-off. Hopefully. Touch wood.

Both. I have to be very careful with here and ebay or my flat would be full of amps on the floor and basses on all spare wallspace, leaving no room for me.

Rob is the dude who bought my Trace head. Well, his Trace head now, I guess... It was nice and easy, very pleasant chap to chat to, good communication and all in all a perfect little deal! Hope you enjoy the amp when it arrives

I'm not sure what the fuss is about. Eden Nemesis stuff is built in China and no-one even mentions it when discussing China manufacture. Clearly their QC is top notch, so it's obvious that as long as the QC is kept up-to-scratch, the components are sourced wisely (i.e. don't go cost-cutting like Gibson did with Trace) and the contract manufacturer is kept on a tight leash everything will be OK. My experience in my day job sees contact with Chinese CEMs all day long, apart from a few stupid things here and there (which everyone else is also capable of) they are no different from UK, continental European or American manufacturers. Some of our bigger Chinese customers have stricter QA and QC than their UK parent companies.
Been rehearsing with a covers band for a few weeks now and whilst I'm getting by OK with my Line 6 Lowdown Studio 110 in rehearsals, it looks like I'm going to have to get something with a bit more grunt for gigs. I tried out an Ashdown EB180-15, liked the sound and considered going for the MAG 300watt version until I clocked the new Trace Elliot 715 combo. I've always thought about treating myself to some TE gear, but never too seriously until now. I like the features in the new 715 - particularly the 7-band graphic, tweeter, built-in compression and the relatively portable cabinet size. However, as the only reviews I've been able to track down seem to be for the older 715 which has a larger cabinet and probably pre-dates Peavey's current ownership of TE, I'd be Interested to hear any views on the current 715 or any suggestions for alternatives within the same budget (up to £550).
Not had a chance to play any of the new stuff myself yet, but by all accounts the 715 is the little brother and has had mixed reviews. However, if you like it and get the tone you want, buy it! I'm quite tempted to try it out with the idea for it to become my rig for my function band.
Ok.. so here's the thing... I've played bass for quite some time... a purist at heart... 4 strings, 1 lead and an amp... no fuss... setup in seconds... I am now of the opinion that I would like to have a go with a 5 string bass... Just to see what I think of it. What I'm after is a little advice from you guys... A cheap(ish) yet relatively good quality bass... What should I look at and how much should I budget? I appreciate there will be plenty of views and I'm open to all of them.. Cheers in advance....
Have a look HERE coz these are great!
