I often use my B50r for smaller gigs, awesome tone!

If you are set on ashdown keep an eye out for used 220 or 330 spyder combos in the 1x15 format (think the 220 maybe 1x12). As a die hard all valve fan (mainly ampeg) I absolutely LOVED the ashdown Spyder series

Did you notice much/any change in tone doing the bridge change? My bass looks much better with the gold but I swear it has lost some “umph” or “depth”

So the gold hardware came today. Loving the look compared to the previous Chrome that the bass came with

Just as a quick update. Despite my thread waxing lyrical about the GHS Pressurewounds i managed to snap a G last night!!! Being previously a full time flats user this mist be the first string ive snapped in years! As such this is now strung up with my previous favourite non-flat strings - Elites Groundwound. Still sounds monumental

Here we have something of a mystery USA Peavey bass. Its DEFINITELY a Unity bass – meaning its through neck. It ISNT a Dyna bass as only three controls and is passive PJ (though the wiring column in the back does have a dedicated battery section so seems to be off the same production line as the Dyna basses). Some suggested a B-Ninety but they seem to be bolt on necks?? From my full research I’m about 80% confident it is a Foundation Unity bass Ill be honest, it’s a bit scruffy with plenty of swirly play wear and at the heel of the neck it looks like someone has been wearing a proper Lemmy type belt whilst playing. I haven’t had it long and all ive really done to it is stuck some Pressurewounds, a gold bridge (original black also supplied) on it and tweaked the truss. The plan was to eventually upgrade to some active EMG’s or something – there’s plenty of room in that cavity to play with! What got me about this bass is the black glossy curved front to the body that reminds me a bit of the Spector design. Very comfortable neck, nice and shallow with a nut width of just shy of 40mm. A very comfy bass to play and the through neck gives really easy access to the upper frets It would probably buff and clean up even better but it was bought as a project and to be a cheaper version of a Spector (I know, I know) Great USA build and the serial number indicates a 1991 YOB according to the various look up sites. Comes with a substantial and original fitted Peavey hard case Can be tried and heard through my SVT hear in Bolton or could post within UK potentially. Ideally looking for £300 ono collected. Pics to follow asap

Wow, that is quite a difference. Maybe i could sell My old one as scrap to get melted down to cover the cost of a new gold one!

Mark at Bass Direct has managed to find a gold bridge for me! At £130 they aren't cheap are they! Hope I can offset the cost by flogging my chrome one
-
Snap! I was also looking at that. Much prefer it without that knuckleduster bridge thing but looks a great bass and not a bad price at all

Cheers, will defo revisit as that tonepump will absolutely need taming a little
-
Jesus H Christ! Its my first active bass in a while and I forgot. Plugged it into my SVT which I had set at 'normal' home volume for my Peavey passive bass....I just hit an open E and I now owe Mrs Pow a new dinner plate set! That is PHENOMINALLY loud! Will defo be tweaking that tonepump when I get more play time later

£1,300 from Classic and Cool. Possibly a tad on the dear side but have been after one for a while and don't see this come up very often in this colour and specs.

So she arrived 🥰🥰. Lovely bass, slightly deeper neck than i expected but will soon get used to that coming from a 50’s P bass. Ordered some GHS pressurewounds for her and think I will go down the gold hardware route (bridge and tuners). Going to have an amplified tinker later with the tonepump through the SVT but for now im in love! My Spector cherry is popped

Honestly, if youdve said to me a few weeks ago that not only would i have a bass without flatwounds on it but that id actually really like it id’ve required you to take a drugs test Not cheap, bass direct seem cheapest from what ive seen so far, but lovely. Dont make my mistake though and judge them straight away (or maybe thats just a flatwound user error)

Thats the one mate. Im always scouring sites like Richones 2nd hand, bass direct and C&C. I saw it mentioned in the 'coming soon' section so dropped him an email. Very friendly, helpful and approachable guy. Several emails later and the deed was done. Ive stuck a large layaway deposit on it until next week when ill pay it off and find a hiding place from the wife

So, in short ive always been a P bass/Flatwound player for as long as i can remeber. I discovered flatwound perfection for me in the Elites Detroit flatwounds and have happily thumped away for around 10 or so years on these with various p basses. Fast forward to my lockdown band project recording remotely (which the Ampeg SVT Tube DI is phenominal for BTW) and i was clear i needed something a bit more modern. I HATE rounds, their shrill top end, unconrollable harmonics that always seem to lack proper thump - i tried allsorts - nickels, steels and alloys. I got close to a good sound with the Elites Grounds but the E died too quick. Tried the D'addario halfs which were good but still not quite right and just as i was about to order some GHS Brite Flats someone mentioned GHS Pressurewounds. Now years ago i did tinker with DR Fat Beams which were apparently similar in construction i.e compression wound so i thought i knew what to expect. Well, the Pressurewounds arrived and i strung them up - meh, felt nice but to my flatwound biased ear they just sounded like rounds. I left them on and kept picking up the bass (a USA Peavey Unity bass) and tinkering with the setup. About 24hrs in and id say around 6 or 7 hours on the strings they are now starting to sound EXACTLY what i had in my head. The depth and fundamental is there, its a thumpy punch. The hights are tamed but not dead, The E rings but isnt shrill, it has beef! If i could change ONE thing it would be a little more tension but sound wise im really enjoying these after years and years on flats. They will certianly be going on my incoming Spector!

Cheers, will look into it. According to serial number mines a 2018

Cheers for the comments and help everyone. Ill wait to see it in person before deciding on chrome/gold but I do love the look of the gold hardware on black gloss. Next decision is strings - historically for as long as I can remember ive loaded all my basses (99% of the being P basses) with flats but im looking for something different for the Spector. Ive posted the clip numerous times but ill looking to cop the Leigh Foxx from Blondie live tone. I like a fair bit of tension on my strings so probably hex core, I also like a good fundamental and subdued highs so possible Nickel as opposed to Steel. Ill need to look round but thoughts so far are GHS Pressurewounds, Fender 7150's and maybe even some half/ground wounds

just the bridge and tuners. Not sure how long ill need to hunt for but its definitely the look I want
