  1. Whilst not strictly 'Solid State' (although SS power sections) ive always like the Ashdown Spyder series (both the 330 and 550) and the Warwick Tubepath 5.1
  2. Always been a P bass man. My main squeeze for years was a MIJ Fender PB70, then a 1978 Tokai Hardpuncher. Always had a back up bass tho that i would switch in and out.....until i got this - a MIM 50’s classic. Since then NOTHING else gets picked up. All ive done to it is my usual P bass mods - pribora pups and my fave flatwounds. Stunning bass to play 👌
  3. The one in the link? Great amps the non pro II’s, mine is simply the best tone ive ever had 👌
  4. Seems Richtone have got a job lot of tasty amps from somewhere and theres some bargains to be had including this beaut at an amazing price! https://www.richtonemusic.co.uk/product/ampeg-svt-ii-head-case-2nd-hand-**contact-for-delivery**-a62-yampeg102269/ Also have a nice Heritage B15 too as well as a newer SVT II Pro! https://www.richtonemusic.co.uk/product/ampeg-svt-ii-pro-head-**contact-for-delivery**-a67-w-flight-case-2nd-hand-yampeg102271/ https://www.richtonemusic.co.uk/product/ampeg-portaflex-heritage-b-15n-**contact-for-delivery**-a61-w-case-2nd-hand-yashdown102268/ *no affiliation whatsoever
  5. The Mk4’s are generally a bit useless for bass. Very noisy and become “squishy” way too quick. Can be had fir around £350/£400 tho so cheap enough to scratch an itch i suppose.
  6. During lockdown I developed a fascination with the playing and tone of both Nigel Harrison and then latterly Leigh Foxx of Blondie. I worked through Atomic and Dreaming - both relatively simple lines but Atomic has some strange variations of the same line and that mini run Harrison does during the verse/chorus is surprisingly tricky.
  7. Same here. SVT II non pro for everything from rehearsals to gigs. Cant get THAT sound from anything else
  8. As part of my ongoing project ive received these pickups. Obviously they are the older solder type rather than the more modern solderless ones EMG now seem to produce. However, how can i tell exactly what EMG pickups these are? Im assuming they are an active set (im hoping so anyway) and once my project is at the wiring stage ill probably whip it off to my local tech. Hopefully these will eventually match up with a EMG jazz bridge pup and a spector tonepump pre amp! Anyway, any thoughts on what model of EMG these may be?
  9. Possible trades for something active, 4 stringed and ideally in a P/J format (desperately seeking this Spector/Leigh Foxx tone on a budget!)
  10. Bought another P bass loom from John, my first with the Bourne pots however. Love the solid feel, I like to feel a bit of resistance on the pots rather than a too 'loose' kind of feel if that makes sence. These are really nice. Usual clear instructions and mini screwdriver included!
  11. 1) Spector NS2 in gloss black with gold hardware 2) Ampeg SVT 50th Anniversary head 3) Ampeg heritage B15
  12. Would consider trades for a Fender Precision Lyte. Must be in the Montego black colour with the gold hardware
  13. Don't suppose you'd be interested in selling the thumper by any chance?
  14. Todays random bass musing - could I get a Precision Bass Lyte, put active EMG P/J pups in and also stick a Spector Tonepump in it?

    1. Bigwan

      Bigwan

      Why couldn't you?

    2. Deepbass

      Deepbass

Do they sell the circuit separately ...?

  15. My go to flats. The perfect blend of thump without the dead flump. No modern twang here just that old school record sound whilst still being clear
  16. Id say the 50’s is brighter. The tokai is ash bodied which to me gives a deeper tone. Obviously i have different pickups at the moment in the two basses but I definitely get a brighter tone from the classic 50’s
  17. As this is an alpha bass (my old one 😃) and it being all valve i was always under the impression that the heads outputs needed to see matched impedance? Happy to be proven wrong but i thought being all valve it was best to stick to what the outputs stated
  18. Just to add - currently in the bass is a SPB-1. Not a bad pup by any means but just seems to be lacking ''ooomph'' or ''wallop''. Ive always loved the Priboara handwound pups from Russia but thinking something a little hotter might help push the SVT for the spongey growl as per the above vid
  19. Ive been tempted by on of these for a while but my main concerns are 1) Its not really a traditional P bass tone and 2) Mud! I play a MIM Classic Reissue 50's bass into an old Ampeg SVT into a 2x12 ampeg, no effects. Im looking for big depth which obviously the Thumper will provide but im also looking for growl and not just a mud bath in the low end. I guess the Thumper will push my valves a bit harder which may in turn give me some of that spongey/bouncy growl but as im using flatwounds i dont want there to be a complete lack of clarity and just a load of uncontrollable boom coming out. Does anyone have any specific experience using the Thumper with flats (particularly through a valve head) that can comment? As far as the tone in my head im seeking from the thumper its kinda like the vid below (yes i know its a completely different bass with active electronics) but with the hotter output of the thumper and the darker overall tone i was hoping to get in this ballpark:-
