  1. Todays random bass musing - could I get a Precision Bass Lyte, put active EMG P/J pups in and also stick a Spector Tonepump in it?

    1. Bigwan

      Bigwan

      Why couldn't you?

    2. Deepbass

      Deepbass

Do they sell the circuit separately ...?

  2. My go to flats. The perfect blend of thump without the dead flump. No modern twang here just that old school record sound whilst still being clear
  3. Id say the 50’s is brighter. The tokai is ash bodied which to me gives a deeper tone. Obviously i have different pickups at the moment in the two basses but I definitely get a brighter tone from the classic 50’s
  4. As this is an alpha bass (my old one 😃) and it being all valve i was always under the impression that the heads outputs needed to see matched impedance? Happy to be proven wrong but i thought being all valve it was best to stick to what the outputs stated
  5. Just to add - currently in the bass is a SPB-1. Not a bad pup by any means but just seems to be lacking ''ooomph'' or ''wallop''. Ive always loved the Priboara handwound pups from Russia but thinking something a little hotter might help push the SVT for the spongey growl as per the above vid
  6. Ive been tempted by on of these for a while but my main concerns are 1) Its not really a traditional P bass tone and 2) Mud! I play a MIM Classic Reissue 50's bass into an old Ampeg SVT into a 2x12 ampeg, no effects. Im looking for big depth which obviously the Thumper will provide but im also looking for growl and not just a mud bath in the low end. I guess the Thumper will push my valves a bit harder which may in turn give me some of that spongey/bouncy growl but as im using flatwounds i dont want there to be a complete lack of clarity and just a load of uncontrollable boom coming out. Does anyone have any specific experience using the Thumper with flats (particularly through a valve head) that can comment? As far as the tone in my head im seeking from the thumper its kinda like the vid below (yes i know its a completely different bass with active electronics) but with the hotter output of the thumper and the darker overall tone i was hoping to get in this ballpark:-
  7. Few queries regarding its working condition. I filmed a short iphone vid showing the amp firing up from scratch. Couldnt play much whilst holding the phone but gives an idea of it working and giving an honest perception of the fan noise IMG_8935.MOV
  8. I have my cab back from our lockup finally so the amp can be tested, heard, felt, sniffed (we all like sniffing hot valve amps right?) with my bass or yours. Offers always considered. No trades though im afraid. just fired it up and its sounding righteous 👌
  9. Finally getting access back to our rehearsal lock up so I can start shifting more stuff ive hoarded over the years Here we have an Ampeg b410 HLF 4ohm 4x10 cab with substantial casters. Lovely grey vintage looking front and great sound. Being 4ohm you can get the most from your solid state heads or run a nice valve amp with it. Tolex is tatty but no major rips or flaps. Pics to follow asap. Collection would be from Bolton or could deliver within reasonable distance
  10. No longer taking SVT trades as i snagged a good deal on some. Will take £600 cash collected or meet up within reasonable distance.
  11. Love my Ampeg 212av. They are ported but designed to replicate a sealed cab with a similar tone to the old 810e. Great lows and slight mid push but its the highs i like - none of this shrill ice picky type highs ive had with other more expensive cabs
  12. Im still to find a 'lightweight' amp or cab that fully captures MY sound. An ampeg valve amp into a sealed cab. Ive tried so many pedals, class d etc etc and it just isnt there yet for me
  13. Well, looks like as I suspected I might need to shell out on some power valves. Trying to bias it up to the amount stated on the chasis but even at maxed out the trim pot it doesn't appear to be enough. 3 of the valves do look like they are pretty old Svetlana's whilst the other three look like newer Marshall branded 6550. I see I can pick up a pack of 6 x Bugera 6550's for £150 but no reviews or comments on them anywhere. Might pay the bit extra for Sovtek or JJ's?
  14. Looks like I need to learn the bias procedure on these. I fired it up through an Ampeg SVT212 AV and the amp is very quiet even with volume cranked - well maybe not VERY quiet but certainly not SVT loud. There is also quite a bit of hum coming from the amp at idle so ill need to dig around online and find the biasing video ive seen before.
  15. Yes, finally got my hands on one....er two @Bankai. The one on the left is fully working/serviced but the one on the right is spares/repair. The seller wouldnt split so im flipping the broken one as is.
  16. So, as of an hour ago, i joined this group 👌
  17. My cab should be here in the next day or two (finally) so testing back to normal rather than lugging your cab over
  18. Certainly is, luckily 6L6GCs are reasonably cheap, this set set me back around £120 as opposed to the £200+ you are talking to revalve an SVT’s power section
  19. New as of yet ‘undisclosed’ toy incoming. 2 x Ampeg SVT II non pro’s.  One working which will be kept and one spares/repairs that will be moved on

  20. Yes, sorry I forgot to update the ad. Using luggage scales and hanging the bass by its strap im getting a gnats hair over 10lb give or take for the crude method
