  1. Lovely, as a dyed in the wool P bass player that Jazz bass looks stunning! Still not sure whether to replace my cloth or not
  2. Blondie - love them and have spent a lot of lockdown learning and studying Nigel Harrisons bass work. The more ive studies the more I find Chris Stein an absolute bellend. Completely out of touch and up his own derrière without an awful lot of talent tio back it up. IMHO of course
  3. That's what put me off, call me old fashioned but I don't like writing on my pup covers. Changing them isn't an issue unless, like the GZR's, the pups covers are none removable. Ive just swapped out a set of SPB1's from my MIM 50's and have gone with my usual pups - Pribora Handwound. All my P basses have these in, they are a lovely trad style pup
  4. Tech 21 VT Bass pedal – the later version with the defeatable speaker sim. In fantastic condition with original tin and instruction/settings card (2 for some reason!?). I used the to beef up my old solid state amps and get that narly 70’s svt blueline type woody growl. The pedal will do anything from a clean sound, fat clean SVT sound, SVT on brink of breakup, valve amp screaming to its limits and then a metal type fuzz. Only selling as im using a B50R for home use which has a nice valvey type tone already and my big rig is a peavey valve amp which…well…is a valve amp that nails the valve amp tone. Can post within the UK for free or knock a couple of quid off for a socially distanced collection from sunny Bolton
  5. NAD – whilst working from home and all my big amps are lockedup in our rehearsal space I found myself missing my old B15 for home noodles. For several days I was considering the ampeg b50r over on that Bass Directs website and eventually decided to treat myself. She arrived today and initially dabbles have been met with some surprise. Firstly for 50w she is VERY loud! I need more time with her to get the EQ right, currently lacking a bit of low end, not that I was expecting windows rattling from a 50w 1x12 but im sure theres more in there to be had. So far with my MIM 50’s bass and flats she sounds good, very smooth and ‘balanced’. Ill maybe hook up my VT pedal to her later to see what tones I can coax out. Only issues are the well worn grill cloth (not a biggie) and the standard Rocket Bass problem in that the jewel light doesn’t work. Ill report back after a proper mess and play. Any other b50r users on here?
  6. Always open to trade on used flats (not fender/chromes bright type ones tho, i like oldschool/thumpy)
  7. Yes ideally, if you buy a quad from most Valve sellers they usually are matched anyway
  8. The 6L6 far right as you look at the pic has lost its vacuum. The white top gives it away. The one next to it looks like a Zerox? Either way that head will defo need a new set of 6L6GC's. My peavey has 6 of them in it and ive been happy with the JJ's so far, I bought from Hotrox as they tend to be cheapest without skipping on proper testing etc, should be about £120 for the power valves, not sure whats in the pre-amp of these tho. Id say all in you need to budget around £200/£250 for new valves and a tech to service it (plus any other parts he/she may come across)
  9. Had an excellent social distancing transaction with Andy when buying my Bison bass. Effortlessly smooth transaction and quick chinwag about all things valve. No problems here
  10. Eventful bass day.  One axe leaves the stable and a new home amp is on its way - ampeg B50r

  11. Off all the P’s ive played including vintage fenders my fave and by far the best is my 78 tokai hard puncher. Cost me £550 a few years back but the prices are going up in these gems now
  12. I have a used set of elites flats up for grabs. Used on a P bass for around 4hrs so still need breaking in. I only cut the E string (still with plenty of winds). The other strings were installed uncut. Also up for grabs a brand new unused set of the Elites Grounds. Bought in anticipation of going on my MIM 50's but in the end that got flats too. £20 posted for the Grounds £15 posted for the flats Knock a few quid of if collected or you are taking both sets
  13. All my other P’s have Pribora pickups in and that was the plan with this also. Whilst i like these pickups ive never been fully decided. first time ive heard or used an SPB1 and im definitely impressed just not sure i prefer it over the priboras
  14. Mystery solved, removed the neck pup to reveal they are SPB1’s. not sure whether they will stay or not yet 🤔
  15. Quite possibly, ive had a few of Johns looms before, excellent bits of kit. Im awaiting a new set of pup screws and when they arrive ill get pics of the loom and pups. These are meant to come as stock with American Std pups but these things are unmarked underneath, look very old (the pole pieces are showing slight rust and gunk) and sound nice and vintage.
  16. I always used to have the covers on my P's, they look amazing but recently ive started playing either directly over or right next to the pups so they would get in the way. She is definitely keeping flats but I could never get on with the loose feel of TI's. I really really like the Elites but am tempted to try the lighter roto's too
  17. will need some help later. Definitely decided on flats but when I popped the hood as it were there has clearly been some electrical mods done. First of a very nice looking after market loom/harness with junction box style connection so changing pups is easier. Its got a great dockin' big silver capacitor (I assume PIO) but the pups are whats intriguing me. No markings but vey vintage looking. Plain black bobbns with dark red windings. Will snap a pic later and see if anyone is able to shed any light as to what they are. Whatever they are their hook up wires were obviously too short and they have had 'extensions' soldered between them and the junction box.
  18. Maybe trade/part ex for something small, house type but old school and valvey combo/amp. 1) Ashdown Little Bastard/Stubby 2) WEM dominator 3) Ampeg B50R/PF20 Nowt much else amp wise really. Cash still king tho
  19. NBD! Ive wanted a 50’s style burst/gold/maple p bass forever. This beaut popped up on reverb and i snapped it up to replcae my outgoing Burns Bison (i need to learn that im just a p bass kinda guy!). Despite all my basses wearing flats the actual plan was for this to get a set of groundwounds. The 78 Tokai is on flats and ud my main axe, this was going to be back up. However when she arrived i whacked flats on until the grounds arrive and she seems to love them!! Now im torn whether to keep the flats on or not! Planned also to swap out the pups but again they sound great. Neck is wider but much shallower than the Tokai, certainly not uncomfortable. Here they both are chilling out
  20. I agree. Ernie Balls defo. They distinguish their gauges by called them "groups". Nice strings, more a modern flatwound, especially when new, lots of sustain and overtones
