2 x sets of Ken Smith Slick Rounds (half/ground wounds) 1 is brand new unopened and the other set has had around 20mins use on my P bass. Tone is nice a deep as you would expect from a full on flat but there is still plenty of overtones and sustain like a round wound. Both are 106-43 gauge £10 for the used set £20 for the new set Above price includes delivery in UK

Cool, glad it got sorted and is back to pumping out that lovely valve tone! Did the tech say what the fault was?

I read that a lot whilst doing my research before buying but I can honestly say ive never wanted for power or more headroom. Im up against a rock drummer, a Vox AC30 and a Fender Twin and easily compete with room to spare. One thing I read (whether its right or wrong) if that these particular amps really do need balanced driver valves (the 12AX7 and 12AU7) before the 6L6’s so first thing I did was this and it did seem to ‘wake the amp up’ somewhat. If anything it might even be TOO powerful for me as im not able to crank it to the valve saturation point. Think im gonna tinker with my DHA Drive Pedal and see if I can get some grit there – though that will leave me short of a nice OD pedal for Chelsea Dagger J

Need a bit of help here possible with amp settings or maybe even valve selection. My current rig/set up is – Pbass with Elites flatwounds into an Ampeg V4BH into an Ampeg 410he. Great beefy sound but just lacking a little grind/drive. Initially I thought it was maybe down to strings – the Elites are very much an old school type flat with a tubby and thumpy sound. I switched to some Elites Groundwounds which certainly brought more grind but also less thump and more tension. Ive tried messing around with having the amps volume on max and setting the level using the gain and also vice versa. Ive put some Chinese 12AX7’s in the pre to try and get a bit more breakup but nothing seems to be working. I just cant seem to get the grind and drive I want – the kind of open, woody tone with a hint of break up that was always associated with p bass through an ampeg valve amp. Amp settings are Bass at Noon, Treble at 11 oclock, Mid at 3 oclock with Mid selector on 3. Finally, I recently I bought a DHA Bass Drive to use on Chelsea Dagger (which it does very well) and im wondering if I should look to use this as an ‘always-on’ type pre-amp pedal (with a less extreme setting than Chelsea Dagger). Any help here much appreciated. I just want to open the sound up a little and add that bit of hair to it.

Strings. Whats on your main gigging bass and why
Pow_22 replied to bassjim's topic in General Discussion
Elites flatwounds on everything for me, just feel right and sound good. 99% of my basses are P Basses tho -

I loved my old Spyder 330 head, cracking amp. I like their amps but never got on with their cabs. Most recently tried a CL cab which is supposedly their top line - very underwhelmed

An SVT through an 8x10 (preferably with a flats loaded P Bass) is something everyone should experience before they die

. Ive been after a reasonably close bass sound to the tone Baz Fratelli gets on Chelsea Dagger for a while and been through numerous fuzz/distortion/overdrive pedals and all have failed. As per the link its fuzzy but still thumpy and reasonably tight. I certainly think in the studio they have taken a clean feed and a fuzzy feed and dubbed them on the album track so I know im not going to get the EXACT tone but im looking to get as close as poss. Ive tried an old Bubble Font Muff that got close-ish but it lacked the thump/bass. The Big Bass Muff isn’t bright enough, an Ibanez PD7 was too sludgey, a Boss BD2 was awesome but again lacked the thump. I play through an Ampeg valve amp so also tried an LPB1 boost pedal to try and overdrive the amp but it wasn’t fuzzy enough (awesome valvey beef tho!). I’m playing a P bass into an always-on DHA Bass Drive to beef up my sound then into the Ampeg V4BH into an Ampeg 410he. I get that my flatwounds wont help but I think that’s what Baz Fratelli uses anyway hence the underlying thump to the sound. https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjt5uPy9JbSAhUKOsAKHcQnAdsQtwIIITAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Df1x1ck2__IY&usg=AFQjCNFkLvs5sgJbtE8_BZgfbuHLy_rN7A&bvm=bv.147448319,d.ZGg Any help with this is muchly appreciated as its driving me round the bend!

Right, this is back up for sales but as spares/repair. Effectively this was serviced back in June 2016 by Mike Powell of MPAV Services in Bolton. The service upgraded the amp to 200-2 specs and included a full new set of JJ KT88’s. I have the schematics from Yorkville that fully detail the 200-2 mod and can supply these. The amp went on to run flawlessly until several weeks ago. I sold the amp on here in full working order, had a PM off the buyer saying they were pleased with the amp and I thought that was that, another good transaction on Basschat. However, 2 weeks later the buyer got in contact to say the amp was humming, there were crackles and pops and they wanted their money back! Since then the amp has been sat here. I have a lovely Ampeg V4B that is my main amp and I just don’t have the time or inclination to take it to the fixers and incure a bench/repair fee. As such the amp is sold as is, spares or repair. Im after £200 ono for it. Not a clue what has gone wrong with it so it will need to go to a good repair tech or someone more tech savvy than myself. Would consider swap/trade for a 90s bubble font muff pedal

When I used mine with an Ashdown 2x12 I had plenty of clean headroom and with the master volume thingy on the back was able to run it pretty clean. I did upgrade the EL34’s to JJ E34L’s which supposedly help out a big headroom wise

For Trade – My Ibanez PD7 Phat Head pedal for your EHX Big Bass Muff Pi I bought the pedal very recently in my continuing quest for a Chelsea Dagger type clanky overdrive. The PD7 basically doesn’t have enough low end loss for me – which is what most people actually try and avoid! It gives a lovely bassy sludgy kind of sound with a nice drive that isn’t too ‘fake fizzy’ for want of a better word. Only slight bad point is the Attack Button doesn’t work, it is set at Off which has never been a problem for me (apparently Off is standard, 1 adds a few overtones/harmonics and 2 adds even more). In good condition and willing to post or meet up within reasonable distance of Bolton. Cash top up is fine from my end too.

Brian bought my Traynor valve head in my 2nd dealing with him and it was just as smooth a transaction as the first time. Great meeting you Brian!

I currently use Dunlop Max Grip Nylon picks as I love the rough grippy texture on them.
