In my quest to nail a certain tone (Look Out Sunshine – The Fratellis) and with excellent help from JTUK of this parish im almost there. Last nights rehearsal was the closest ive got by simply making my signal much hotter (had my Boost pedal on all the time), BDI at full output and volume on my bass at max and turning the amp down to compensate – effectively hitting the amps valve front end with a BIG signal. I was getting a nice valvey type grittiness to the sound and a big fat tone I think the final part in the quest will be a compressor – but im brand new to pedals and am a proper technophobe. Up until a few months ago I was against pedals and went straight into a valve amp and cab. What im currently running P Bass (flats) > TU2 > Behringer BDI (always on, SVT type setting) > Chorus > Ibanez PD7 OD > Linear Booster This goes into an SVTIII (No pro so no gain control) > Ampeg SVT 410he As a note I switched the 3 x 12ax7’s in my amps pre for some Chinese high gain valves that are nice and gritty) Im looking to drop a compressor in but have a few (maybe misguided) specifics:-

Listening to the track im trying to emulate it sounds like only the low notes ae compressed so something that does this ideally. The low notes thump, then seem almost immediately restrained initially then bloom out into a valvey tone/sustain – I guess his tone is coming from natural all valve amp sag/compression rather than an effect.
Ive seen some compressors also boot signal – this would be ideal as it would be a drop in replacement for my current booster rather than adding another pedal to my board. Failing that, if it is an additional pedal I end up with, where abouts would I place it in the chain
Simple to use – its got to be easy to use and would probably be a ‘on all the time’ type effect
Cheap ideally. Im playing in boozers and the crowd probably wouldn’t recognise all the tone im getting – its purely for my personal tone obsession with this particular track/sound
I did think about compression as the sound he seems to be getting is that almost restrained initial pillowy thump that the blooms/breaks out into the mild grind type sustain. The pedal which seems to fit the bill (on a budget) here would be:- http://www.amazon.co.uk/OnceAll-Effects-Dr-Aerolite-Compressor/dp/B00D8KKKJ0 It’s a compressor AND a booster (which may also help put my pre-amp valves a bit with a hotter signal). As such my pedalboard (im VERY new to pedals) would be:- Boss TU2 > Compressor/Booster > Chorus > Ibanez PD7 > Linear Booster I used to use the Linear Booster when I had an all valve amp to push it into a natural Chelsea Dagger type overdrive. I guess if this compressor/booster comes out it would illuminate the need for the Linear Booster?

Thanks for that JTUK. My current P bass has DP122's in it so supposedly fairly gainy/hot pups. Im wondering if raising them nearer to the strings will help too?

Few sets of Flatwounds

My quest for the ultimate flatwound continues. To make way for the next batch I offer for your delectation:-

[s]Pyramid Gold Flats 45-105[/s]
[s]Cut for a p bass but with plenty (probably too many) winds round the pegs so should fit pretty much anything. Had around 5hrs play so still lots of twang left but just starting to get all nice and thumpy/mellow. Reasonably low tension so not finger breakers £20 delivered in UK[/s] 2. Pyramid Gold Flats 40-100 Cut for a 2+2 headstock and have come off my Jack Casady bass having rocked up id say around 10hrs use. These strings never go full on thumpy like la bella’s but these are certainly nicely worn in. Stick a set on a JC bass and you get that great beatles type sound. £20 delivered in UK 3. Sadowsky Flatwound B String (Brand New) Had to buy a 5 string set of these as they had no 4 string ones in stock. I have no use for a Low B £5 delivered in UK -

Ive developed a bit of an obsession with the bass tone on the Fratellis song “Look Out Sunshine” - it’s a lovely solid thump then a bit of valvey type break up in the sustain. I know the gear the bass player uses as standard (flats loaded P bass, SVT, 8x10 etc) and I get that in the studio there will be all sorts of effects and processors in the signal chain. However, I still cant help but chase this sound with my set up of flats loaded P bass , SVTIII, 410he. Ive tried using a BDI21 pedal set to emulate an SVT but it’s a bit muddy and not very gritty. Ive tried changing my flats from the dark sounding picato’s to something with a bit more growl (Fender 9050’s). I can get the solid initial thump but can get the depth or the growly type sustain he’s getting. Ive got some high gain supposed early break-up valves in my SVTIII and that helped take away some of the muddiness but im just not really getting the growl. Is it just the case of the sound coming from the all valve SVT or is there a pre-amp pedal (maybe a mild OD pedal) that could get me close to that sound?

Ampeg B15 for me

Thought id posted this but cant seem to find the topic..... Anyway, I have a problem where I get severe cramp in my picking hand thumb when playing particularly stiff strings. Any Elites flats users on here able to compare the stiffness of these against other flats like Fender or Picato?

Mr Ashdown Sir, can you confirm/deny all the talk on here re: the CTM15 being hybrid rather than valve?

I really like Fende 9050's and they give me that growl i like and last a while but mellow out to give more thump - again its just the tension that gets me. Id like to try the low tension la bellas and also the new Ernie Ball cobalts Might start a new thread in the equipment section to get thoughts on all the flats people on here have tried -

When I say 'ampegy' im more looking at the growl of an SVT Classic (which I know cant be accomplished by anything other than an SVT) but something to get me closer than I currently am

Hi Steve, Yes I remember! We should set up a basschat flats swapping group! Those gauges suggest the may be a little on the high tension side to me. That's what reignited my flats quest - tonally I found m ideal flat in the Labella FS set - however, the tension gave the thumb on my picking hand unbelievable cramp! Ideally im looking for low-ish tension and a nice growl but retaining good initial thump -

Pyramid Gold Flatwound bass strings in the lighter 40-105 gauge. Probably my fave string but price dictates which bass gets them and which get my second fave - Picato’s J These have been cut for a Fender P bass and had around 4hrs play. These are known for their low tension (not wet noodle TI type tension tho!) and whilst they do get thumpy with age they initially sound not too dissimilar to TI’s – maybe a little less treble and a bit more beef. They have Purple silks at each end and feel lovely under the fingers. Im getting rid purely because ive gone up a gauge for my P bass. My Epi Casady has these on tho and it sounds superb with them on. Brand new they are around £50 a set in UK. These can be yours for £20 delivered (in a Pyramid pack albeit for my new higher gauge strings). Im always trying new flats so could be interested in a trade (p bass cut or new) for flats I haven’t yet tried – DR Legend, Ernie Ball etc something a bit growly!

Im planning on using a Behringer BD21 as an ‘on all the time’ effect in my pedal chain. I will be using it for a tiny bit of ampeg type breakup/grit to my sound ala Fratellis type sound. I do have an overdrive pedal for the more distorted/heavey driven valve amp type sounds. My question is, using this an an on-all-the-time pedal where should I be looking to place it in my pedal chain? Im thinking it should be straight after my tuner thus any other effect I apply will be to the ampegy type sound? My current set up is……Bass > Boss TU2 > Boss Chrous > Ibanez PD7 Overdrive > EHX Linear Boost > Ampeg SVT3 Would I put the BDI21 straight after the tuner or would I be best putting it at the end of the effects chain?

Im loving the early Fratellis bass tone at the moment. Its got a nice growly sound to it. I know he uses a flats loaded P bass through an SVT - its got a lovely pillowy thumup initially that has a kind of valvey breakup sustain. Songs like Look Out Sunshine and Mistress Mabel show it really well
