1. They arent too close to me (im in Bolton). The quiet thing seems to be an inherent Ashdown thing (maybe its the vintage style voicing) but ive never felt they put out the volume of like-for-like competitors with the same rating. As i say my supposed 250w Hartke will blow the supposed 500w Ashdown away! I do love the DP200, only thing i could see me getting rid for would be something like an Ampeg V4B or V4BH. I like the b15 type stlying, the relatively light weight and the easy EQ, You say it has the same output as a CTM100?
2. Ive got the Dp200 head that I run with a sealed 4x10 (Ashdown RM 414). I absolutely love it! Always been an Ampeg SVT user but was playing venues where I couldn’t crank it to get the sweet valve sound without killing people. I got this in a decent deal from an ex touring artist but when it arrived the power valves where shot. I whacked a set of Harma 6550’s in and experimented with the pre amp valves. Initially I switched the 12AU7 for a 12AX7 for more volume which did sound great. However, I then stuck a NOS RCA blackplate 12AU7 in the V1 and now it sounds even better. As with all Ashdown gear ive used its never seems quite as loud as the ratings suggest (the comparison I always use with the ‘quiet ashdown’ issue is my Hartke HA2500 will eat my ABM 500 alive for volume) but the tone is sweet and lovely. I do need to get mine serviced at some point as I just stuck the new power valves in without having them biased but so little is known about the amp and Ashdown seem hard to get hold of for advice on Approved Repairers.
3. Trade for a decent small combo (Orange Crush, Ampeg BA, Ashdown etc)
4.
So are these Valve amps worth the extra ?
For me simply yes. Ive tried all concoction of pedals, emulators, hyrbrids etc....IF you want the valve sound (and i fully get that not everyone does) then it HAS to be a valve amp
5. Trade options added
6. Haha true. Nearly as bright as my old Ashdown Bassometers, that thing actually hurt to look at!
7. Silver version with a few scuffs/scrapes but nothing that effects the performance. Heavey well built thing with bright easy to read display. No box but will wrap safely for postage. £25 posted in UK or can collect from bolton Would Part Ex/Trade for a Boss Chorus (CEB-3 or CE5 etc) **SOLD ON EBAY**
8. Pyramid Gold Flats USED (cut 2+2). These have come off my Jack Casady bass after around 5 or 6 hours use. They are my fave string on my P bass but I need something a tad brighter on the casady (have an old set of Fenders ill try). Nowhere near fully broken in but not packet-fresh either. These are the 105-40 gauge and are glassy smooth. Reasonably low tension and very much an ‘old school’ type flat, fairly thumpy and pretty dark. Very expensive brand new! £25 posted in UK?
9. If it looks genuine/natural (nash, sandberg) and not naff and like a kid with a sander has attacked it (limelight) then i think they can look quite cool
10. Of all the 'name' relics ive seen ive always thought the limelights looked a bit....naff. Dont look remotely genuine and a bit like a kid has gone at it with a sander. Nowhere near as genuine looking as the likes of nash and sandberg in my humble
11. Francis bought some TI Flats from me in an effortlessly smooth transaction. No problems here
12. Cheers for the messages peeps. Fully accept that i need to work on technique but have a batch of gigs coming up so looking for a 'quick fix/improvement' before i can knuckle down and work on my picking technique. In the meantime i had a few thomann vouchers so went with a set of Pyramids to see how i get on (cant wait to get the TI's off - great tone but just not got the walloping thump). Will let you know how i get on.
13. Thats good to hear KK. Did you use like-for-like gauge on the Pyramids i.e 45-105?
14. Need some assistance on my next flatwound choice. Obviously it can get very expensive going through sets of flats so was hoping those with experience can help. Basically up until recently all my basses have been strung with La Bella 760FS’s. The tone and feel of the string is fantastic, lovely thumpy P bass through my valve amp and I’m in heaven. However, recently I have been struggling with my picking hand. My thumb cramps up so much that its extremely painful to hold a pick. At a recent gig I had to chuck it and finish the set using fingers which was awful! I’ve tried a few changes of my technique – I’ve raised my bass up from my usual below waist level, read up on the Carol Kaye picking technique etc. They’ve all helped slightly but not enough. So comes the strings…. The la bella’s are known to be high tension so I thought I’d try to find something with less – the obvious choice being TI’s. I bought a set off thomann and put them on my p bass. It’s not so much the tension I don’t like it’s the tone, it’s just not thumpy and thick L. I’ve spent many hours reading up on alternative low tension flats and consensus is varied. One option is La Bella 760FL but I can’t see the tension being much different to the FS set. Other options include Pyramid Gold, DR’s, Status light gauge and the La Bella LTF’s (think these may be too similar to the TI’s. Anybody else here using good old thumpy flats without boat anchor type tension?
15. All sold. Will put a new ad up with any more i come across during the switch to TI's
16. Mike bought some flatwounds off me in an effortless transaction. Deal with confidence
17. Due to recent major cramping issues ive been pretty much forced to get some TI flats for their low tension for some upcoming big gigs before I work on technique or visit docs. As such im stripping my basses down of their current flats and offering them here, I hope I don’t miss the thump too much L:- Elites Detroit Flats (45-105) Had about 2hrs use max.
