Really struggling to settle on a new number two bass. My main bass is a '76 P bass that I love but I want something a little different as back up. My main rig is a big SVT Valve head through a 4x10 Cab but my mini rig I use most is an Orange Bass terror though a 2x12 Ashdown. I play indie/mellow rock, use a pick and have flatwounds on everything. I like traditional looking basses (not a fan of Jazz's tho) and want deep but clear tones. I also love semi-hollow basses. Below is quite a varied shortlist that I have come up with:- Ibanez Artcore AGB140 Looks great with the semi hollow design yet retains the long scale neck. Could do with a gibson style pickguard but I would image with my fave flatwounds on this could be a thump monster. Hardcases that fit are hard to come by tho. Epiphone Thunderbird A bit out of left-field this one. Always loved the look of them and the sound the Kings Of Leon guy gets with his using flats. Seen a good deal on a Korean one with hardcase Epiphone Jack Casady (Black) Probably the coolest looking one and the one ive played in PMT was lovely. With flats it could be great but this is the one that creeps up on the price scale. Fender/Squier Cabronita Bass Much more in keeping with my precision love and traditionalist styling. I did actually have one but got rid as the E string pole on the pickup was so far off that the note bloomed rather than the instant attack the other strings had. Ive since read that this maybe down to me buying a lemon rather than a standard fault. Worth giving it another chance? I know the obvious thing to do would be try them all and see but as we all know most good deals are online and no shop certainly round here will stock all the above at the same time. Budget wise id say maybe £200-300 tops as it literally will be a back up bass. Any advice greatly recieved

Been in a studio all week with my trusty P bass and all is going well. They had a few basses hung up around the bass and inbetween takes i was noodling on a Korean Epi Thunderbird loaded with some ancient looking flats. Now im a flats player through and through, have them on everything i own but ive never seen them on a T'bird before. Didnt get chance to plug in but was wondering if an BCers regularly play a flats loaded Tbird?

Just got myself an Orange bass terror for a bit of a mess around with and the speakon-speakon lead that came with it has confused me. At one end is a neutrik connector labelled NL4FX and the other end a neutrik labelled NL4FC. Im plugging the bass terror onto an Ashdown VS212. Basic question - is this the correct lead?

Snagged one of these for a mess around with in a good deal form the local Crack Coverters. However, the bulb on the front panel isnt working. Anyone know what/where the best replacement bulb can be found for these?

TC RH450 with official TC satchel/holdall, AUX cable and speaker lead. Good condition bar 1 ding in the handle (at the back so out of view) and 1 of the memory buttons has a hairline crack (common on these apparently). Only thing i cant seem to find at the mo is the instruction manual but these can be downloaded from TC. Works perfectly - just using my SVT more. Any trial with you cab and bass or mine. We rehearse Wednesday evenings if you want to really crank it. Collection from Bolton preferred but guess i could arrange postage if i can get hold of some packing materials. Can deliver locally and Do travel a bit so could be something done there. £375 Delivered in UK. Wil knock off some for collection which is preferred (say £350?). Random potential trades = Black Epiphone Jack Casady, Fender Classic 50's P Bass Sunburst

Right then…. Many more suggestions and research later im kinda still a bit stuck. I worked on the RH450 a lot more and have now got a much more satisfying tone from it after messing with the Shift button. I have a nice fat growly tone…..BUT… I still cant help think id get closer to my sound with one of the following:- Ampeg SVT 7 Pro Genz Benz Streamliner 600 Orange Terror Bass Ashdown Spyder (maybe my least preferred option on list – certainly lighter than my SVT but not a micro head). Ive accepted im not going to get a proper all-valve sound from something not all-valve but the more I read on the GB Streamliner the more it sounds tempting. Real valve pre-amp and some fangle-dangle technology adding proper valve type heft to each note sounds great. The SVT7 has lots of good reviews in regards to getting that valvey Ampegy tone and also has the real valve pre-amp. The Orange looks great and again has the valve pre-amp but the few times ive played one its been a bit buzzy and almost trying too hard to get a valve sound (if that makes sense), it seems to concentrate on just one aspect of the valve sound – the breakup, to me the valve tone is much more than that. Budget wise I think I could get circa £350 for the TC and so the GB would be within budget as would the SVT7 and the Orange. The spyders are available for less than budget also.

New (?) Harley Benton model - short scale hollow body

Anyone had an experience with these yet? Down to one bass and looking for a semi-hollow as a bit of fun/back up. GAS keeps pushing me towards an Epiphone Casady bass but this is certainly plucking my interest at this price point -
Ah, Jestermab, i bought your old VS-212 then

Yup, i know Oli well and done a few deals with him. Had a SC200 MkIII not long ago and loved it. Could never get on with the two 120's i had tho, lacked balls. Ideally im looking for something in the smaller side of things

Got gas for one of these but really worry about gig volume juice. I love all-valve and dont mind a bit of breakup but dont want full on mushy distortion. It would be paired with an Ashdown VS-212 cab, played with a flats loaded P bass against 2 guitards with 80w hybrid marshalls and a fairly loud drummist. The option ive considered is renting one for a week to see how i get on before taking the plunge but none of the local rental places have them. Anyone on here either gig with one or prepared to lend me one for a week in return for my TC RH450 for a week? The other option is the Little Bastard 550 but these are hard to come by and are only pre-amp valved

During my quest ive just stumbled across a very nice looking small amp - Fender Rumble 500 V3. Anyone tried this? Looks very nice but doesnt appear to be too many stockists round my way

The other amp ive considered slightly is the Ashdown Little Barsteward 30. Id love to get one for a week to really put it through its paces with my VS-212 as im not convinced it would give me a giggable tone at 30w. I worry it would just end up a distorted mush but the thought of a smaller real valve amp does grab my interest
I think the RH450 is what you need TBH. If you forget all the multiple settings, all you have is gain, 4 tone knobs, tube gain and volume. That's just two more knobs than you need... Frankly almost anything else you have mentioned so far is inferior to the RH450 IMO.
Its the Shift options im having issues with. If i set all the Shifts flat and just use the normal EQ as standard it seems to be lacking any ball of heft. I think i need to learn the shift options properly. My normal EQ is somewhere like Bass at noon, treble at 10'oclock and Mids at 1'oclock with the gain driving it. This setting on the RH450 just sounds a bit weedy. How are people setting their 'shift' settings?
