I used to go to classes and see teenagers / kids managing on 34" scale basses and then I broke out my 30" scale bass and felt a bit of a twot. I feel a lot more comfortable with a huge bass in my hands now but then perhaps I am trying to make up for something else, like short blokes who drive a Porsche.

These guys are obviously your heroes and inspired you to pick up the bass. I have different heroes Mick Karn, Peter Hook,JJ Brunel, Andy Rourke, etc. but I appreciate other genres such as Percy Jones, Bernard Edwards, Larry Graham. No doubting these guys were awsome it's just not my thing. I'm sure James Jamerson and Bob Babbitt were geniuses but I just don't get the whole Motown / Philly sound thing' just as I can see why people would hate The Smiths because of Morissey but Rourke / Marr are just amazing musicians.

Been learning a bit of China Crisis recently and discovered another long lost bass hero, Gary ‘Gazza’ Johnson. Some lovely stuff on ‘The Highest High, ‘African And White’ and some nice subtle fretless on ‘Christian’ Anyone know what he is doing now and if he recorded with anyone else?

what a brilliant bit of software

To be honest, i paniced when i first got a 34" scale bass because I'm a 6ft bloke with girls hands! I swapped in my first Ibanez gsr200 and traded it in for a short scale bass and it felt horrible, more like playing a toy or a six string. I was told not to worry that with various hand stretching excercises I would be able to play ok so I sold the short scale and now have two 34" scale basses and i can easily span across 4 frets even with my girlie hands So what i'm trying to say is to carry on with the large basses because if I can play them, anyone can

Well when i first started looking i was told the Ibanez gsr200 and one that i know have a Yamaha rbx170 which is very nice. I hear those harley benton ones are good value also.

Here is an odd one for you. I have one of those TV theme tune albums and 'Return of the Saint' was on it. The bass is just lovely on it and I have had no luck finding out who played on it. Anyone got any ideas?
